Abstract

An analysis is made of a nonlinear interaction of laser radiation with a chemically active medium in which a branched-chain reaction takes place. This reaction enhances greatly the contrast of phase gratings formed as a result of photodecomposition. The example of a gaseous mixture of hydrogen disulfide with oxygen is used in a theoretical investigation of a degenerate four-wave interaction in the course of photodissociation of CS2 molecules and subsequent reactions of the dissociation products. The dynamics of reflection is calculated for different CS2 concentrations and radiation intensities, and it is shown that a high efficiency can be achieved in such systems.

Relaxation time of phase-conjugate reflection via four-wave mixing of radiation in the active medium of a CO2laser

Valeri I. Kovalev

The experimental relaxation time of degenerate four-wave mixing based on the nonlinearity of saturation of the active media of TEA CO 2 lasers (~0.3 μs) is shown to be an order of magnitude less than the time calculated on the basis of the existing theories. A new mechanism is proposed to account for the relaxation of such mixing in the active media of TEA CO 2 lasers. This mechanism postulates erasure of gratings, formed in the course of the fourwave mixing, of the population inversion of the active levels of a laser due to a high rate of filling of the upper level by resonant energy transfer from nitrogen molecules.

Phase conjugation of an optical wave in the case of a degenerate four-wave interaction in an amplifying medium of a chemical HF laser

Michail G. Galushkin, V Yu Nikitin, А. Н. Ораевский

The approximation of a constant intensity of reference waves is used in the case of low values of the reflection coefficients (less than unity) to investigate numerically the efficiency of optical phase conjugation of a wave from a pulsed chemical HF laser based on a chain reaction. It is shown that the reflection coefficient for the three strongest emission bands P1–0, P2–1, and P3–2 of a pulsed chemical HF laser can be 0.1.

Four-wave interaction due to a thermal nonlinearity in active media of solid-state lasers

Michail G. Galushkin, Konstantin V. Mitin, K. A. Sviridov

A calculation is reported of the reflection coefficients for degenerate four-wave mixing in thermal gratings that form in the active media of solid-state lasers. It is shown that these reflection coefficients may be close to the reflection coefficients of amplitude gratings in the active media of ruby crystal and neodymium glass lasers.

Efficiency of ring systems for phase self-conjugation of radiation by four-wave interaction in media with thermal nonlinearity

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, Mark V. Zolotarev, A. A. Stepanov +1 more

A theoretical analysis is made of the efficiency of typical ring systems of phase-conjugating mirrors utilizing a degenerate four-wave interaction in media with a thermal nonlinearity. The analysis is made for steady-state conditions taking into account wave saturation effects in an amplifier situated in a positive feedback circuit. It is shown that the reflection coefficient in these systems is extremely sensitive to the level of the phase-conjugate signal (as the ratio of the signal intensity to the saturation intensity of the amplifier active medium is increased, the reflection coefficient of the ring phase-conjugating mirror decreases sharply). It is also found that at a high level of the nonlinearity and for an appreciable gain per pass, these systems exhibit multistability (i.e., several different steady states exist).

Nonlinear optical properties of the active medium in intracavity phase conjugation of the radiation of a pulsed electron-beam-controlled discharge CO2laser. II. Theoretical analysis

Michail G. Galushkin, А. А. Ионин, А. А. Котков +1 more

Numerical simulation is used as the basis of an analysis of nonlinear optical properties of the active medium in intracavity four-wave mixing of the radiation of a pulsed electron-beam-controlled discharge CO 2 laser on saturated-gain and refractive-index diffraction gratings. The reflection coefficient of the phase-conjugated signal is determined for various cavity Q -factors, specific input energies, and pressures of the laser-active mixture. A comparison is made of the theoretical and experimental results. It is found that the rate of formation of amplitude gratings is governed primarily by the initial population inversion and by the intensities of the interacting waves. It is shown that transient phase gratings make the dominant contribution to the phase-conjugate reflection coefficient at high pressures of the mixture.

Reflection efficiency and response relaxation time in degenerate four-wave mixing in the active media of TEA CO2lasers

Valeri I. Kovalev, M. B. Suvorov

An experimental investigation was made of the reflection by a nonlinearity from gain saturation in the active medium of a TEA CO 2 laser under degenerate four-wave mixing conditions. A new mechanism of relaxation of the response to such a nonlinearity was identified and processes with submicrosecond and subnanosecond relaxation times were found in CO 2 . The saturation intensities for these processes and the conditions for achieving high reflection intensities as a result of such a mixing were determined.
