Abstract

The approximation of a constant intensity of reference waves is used in the case of low values of the reflection coefficients (less than unity) to investigate numerically the efficiency of optical phase conjugation of a wave from a pulsed chemical HF laser based on a chain reaction. It is shown that the reflection coefficient for the three strongest emission bands P1–0, P2–1, and P3–2 of a pulsed chemical HF laser can be 0.1.

Phase conjugation under conditions of degenerate four-wave interaction involving simulated Raman scattering in a resonator

Anatolii A Afanas'ev, V V Drits, B. A. Samson

A system for phase conjugation of Stokes radiation by a four-wave interaction involving intracavity stimulated Raman scattering (STRS) in a Raman-active medium with a nonresonant nonlinearity. This method can be used in construction of high-power sources of highly directional Stokes radiation on the basis of round-trip STRS amplifiers coupled to a phase-conjugating element. It is shown that an STRS converter utilizing organic liquids and subjected to laser pumping of less than 100 MW/cm2 intensity inside a resonator can ensure a highly efficient phase conjugation with a peak reflection coefficient in excess of unity. Depending on the ratio of the Raman and nonresonant susceptibilities of a medium, there is an optimal value of the coefficient representing the degree of conversion of laser pump radiation into STRS radiation, which ensures the maximum phase conjugation efficiency.

Degenerate four-wave mixing of c-w h-f laser beams in h-f absorption cell. Technical report

H. Mirels, John G. Coffer, Jay M. Bernard +1 more

Phase conjugation of a cw hydrogen fluoride (HF) laser beam has been investigated experimentally and theoretically using resonant degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) in an HF gas absorption cell. A single-line single-mode HF laser, operating on P1(8), P1(9),or P1(10) transitions, provided total (forward plus backward) pump beam intensities of 130, 600, and 400 W/sq. cm., respectively, in the HF absorption cell. A probe beam intensity of the order of 10 W/sq. cm. was also provided. Conjugate reflection of the probe beam was investigated as a function of gas cell pressure and as a function of frequency detuning from line center. The variation of reflectivity with gas cell pressure at fixed laser beam intensity indicated a peak reflectivity of the order of .0001 at pressures from 2 to 4 Torr. Measurement of conjugate beam intensity, as a function of frequency detuning from the line center, provided a signal with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of about 30 MHz. The latter is of the order of the homogeneous width, for HF at the test pressure, and may be compared to the Doppler width delta nu sub d = 300 MHz for the medium. An Analytical model is presented which provides theoretical estimatesmore » for the variation of reflectivity with pressure. Effects of diffusion, thermal conduction, pump depletion, and a nonuniform (Gaussian) profile are considered. Theoretical estimates for peak reflectivity agree with experiments to within a factor of about 2.« less

Phase conjugation of pulsed CO2laser radiation by four-wave mixing in CCl4

Alexander A. Betin, O V Mitropol'skiĭ

An experimental investigation was made of phase conjugation under conditions of degenerate four-wave interaction of CO2 laser radiation in carbon tetrachloride as a function of various parameters of the signal radiation and of the experimental geometry. It was found that the conjugation accuracy for a single-mode signal beam with a divergence of 2 mrad was 87%, but when a phase plate introducing a divergence of 70 mrad was used, the accuracy was 77%. The reflection efficiency and the phase conjugation quality depended strongly on the ratio of the energy density of the signal wave to the energy density of the pump wave. An investigation was made of the dependence of the reflection coefficient on the angular mismatch between the counterpropagating pump waves and on the matching of the optical paths of the interacting waves.

Degenerate four-wave interaction based on photodissociation of chemically active media

Michail G. Galushkin, Evgenii B Gordon, М. С. Дроздов +1 more

An analysis is made of a nonlinear interaction of laser radiation with a chemically active medium in which a branched-chain reaction takes place. This reaction enhances greatly the contrast of phase gratings formed as a result of photodecomposition. The example of a gaseous mixture of hydrogen disulfide with oxygen is used in a theoretical investigation of a degenerate four-wave interaction in the course of photodissociation of CS2 molecules and subsequent reactions of the dissociation products. The dynamics of reflection is calculated for different CS2 concentrations and radiation intensities, and it is shown that a high efficiency can be achieved in such systems.

Measurement of cw HF laser resonant degenerate four-wave mixing in an absorbing HF gas

John G. Coffer, R. A. Chodzko, Jay M. Bernard +1 more

Continuous wave (cw) phase conjugation of a HF laser beam has been observed using resonant degenerate four-wave mixing in a HF gas absorption cell. A HF laser was operated in the P1(8) transition to provide total (forward plus backward) pump beam and probe beam intensities of about 400 and 30 W/cm2, respectively, in the cell. Conjugate reflectivities were measured as a function of HF pressure and frequency detuning from line center. Reflectivities of the order of 10−4 were measured at HF gas pressures of the order of 2 Torr when the laser frequency was tuned near line center.

Degenerate four-wave interaction in a resonant medium allowing for variation of the pump waves

Alexander A. Betin, A. I. Dyatlov, S. N. Kulagina +2 more

A theoretical analysis is made of the efficiency of wavefront reversal under conditions of a degenerate form of the four-wave interaction in a resonantly absorbing (amplifying) medium allowing for changes in the pump waves as a result of their natural resonant absorption (amplification). The coefficient of reflection into a reversed wave is obtained as a function of the optical thickness of a layer of the medium, the boundary values of the pump wave intensity, and the shift of the field frequency from the line center. The optimal values of these parameters and the corresponding maximum reflection coefficient are determined.
