Abstract

We report the experimental generation of polarization entangled photon pairs based on spontaneous four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide. Using a nano-scale silicon wire waveguide placed in a fiber loop, we obtained 1.5-microm band polarization entanglement with two-photon interference visibilities of >83%.

Entanglement Generation Using Silicon Photonic Wire Waveguide

Hiroki Takesue, K. Harada, Hiroshi Fukuda +5 more

This paper reviews recent progress on telecom-band entangled photon-pair sources based on spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a silicon photonic wire waveguide. Thanks to the large third order nonlinearity of nano-scale silicon waveguides, we can generate photon pairs efficiently. Moreover, the use of silicon waveguides enable us to avoid the noise photons caused by spontaneous Raman scattering, which has been a serious problem with entanglement sources based on SFWM in dispersion shifted fiber. We successfully demonstrated high-purity time-bin and polarization entanglement generation using 1-cm long silicon waveguides.

Generation of high-purity entangled photon pairs using silicon wire waveguide

K. Harada, Hiroki Takesue, Hiroshi Fukuda +5 more

We observed high-purity correlated and entangled photon pairs generated through spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a silicon wire waveguide (SWW). Employing a nano-scale silicon waveguide with a low loss mode size converter, we obtained a high coincidence to accidental coincidence ratio (CAR) of around 200 that was larger than that of cooled dispersion shifted fiber (DSF) by a factor 3.2, and observed the two-photon interference fringe of time-bin entangled photons with > 95% visibility without subtracting the accidental coincidences.

15 μm polarization entanglement generation based on birefringence in silicon wire waveguides

Ning Lv, Wei Zhang, Yuan Guo +3 more

In this Letter, the 1.5 μm polarization entanglement generation is realized in a silicon wire waveguide utilizing its birefringence. In this scheme, two orthogonal polarized correlated states are generated by scalar processes of spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in the quasi-transverse electrical and quasi-transverse magnetic modes, respectively. Meanwhile, the vector processes of SFWM are suppressed by the group birefringence in the waveguide. The maximum polarization entangled state is generated by optimizing the pump polarization, which is demonstrated by the experiments of two-photon interference and polarization indistinguishability at one side. The fringe visibilities of two-photon interferences are 96.8±4.7% and 86.0±3.7% under two nonorthogonal polarization detection settings, respectively. This scheme provides a simple way to realize silicon integrated sources for 1.5 μm polarization entanglement generation.

Entanglement generation using silicon wire waveguide

We report the first entanglement generation experiments using silicon waveguide. Using highly efficient spontaneous four-wave mixing in a 1.09 cm long silicon nanowire waveguide at room temperature, we successfully generated high-purity time-bin and polarization entangled photon pairs in the 1.5 μm band. We expect this entanglement source will solve the problems of previous telecom-band entanglement sources.

We report an entanglement generation experiment that utilizes a silicon waveguide.
