Abstract

An experimental investigation was made of the spectral and energy characteristics of the radiation emitted by a dye laser with a ring resonator containing an absorbing medium (potassium vapor) in which an anisotropy was induced by a strong external optical wave. Narrowing of the dye output radiation to about 10???2 nm and locking of the emission spectrum to one- and two-photon absorption lines of the potassium vapor were observed. An investigation was made of the locking efficiency for different polarizations of the strong wave.

Broadening of spectral absorption lines of atomic potassium under the action of laser radiation

Zh. O. Ninoyan, S O Sapondzhyan, G. S. Sarkisyan

An experimental investigation was made of the broadening of the D lines and of the two-photon absorption line (4S1/2–6S1/2) of potassium vapor subjected to ruby laser radiation. A dye laser beam was used as a probe and this made it possible to record simultaneously all three absorption lines. The measurements were carried out for different polarizations and geometries of the exciting and probe radiations. The observed broadening was attributed to the high-frequency Stark effect in the strong field of the incident wave.

Resonances in the emission spectrum of a broadband laser containing a strongly absorbing atomic medium in a magnetic field

А. П. Войтович, О. Е. Костик, В. В. Машко

An investigation was made of the lasing characteristics of a dye laser with a resonator containing potassium vapor of high optical density in a longitudinal magnetic field. Output power resonances, tunable by the magnetic field, were discovered within absorption dips in the lasing spectrum. The tuning rates of the resonances and their separation from the centers of the transitions exceeded tens of times the corresponding Zeeman splitting values of the absorption lines.

Magnetooptic resonances in the output spectrum of a wideband laser with a strongly absorbing medium and use of these resonances to determine high optical densities

А. П. Войтович, О. Е. Костик, В. В. Машко

An explanation has been found for the resonances which form in absorption dips in the output power of a wideband laser with an amplitude-anisotropic resonator containing a strongly absorbing atomic medium in a magnetic field. These resonances are caused by rotation of the polarization plane of the light in the medium. It is suggested that these resonances be used to measure high optical densities of media. This method has been used to experimentally determine the optical density of potassium vapor at the frequencies of the resonance doublet at various temperatures.

Direct determination of the two-photon absorption cross section by the intracavity laser spectroscopy method

Valery M. Baev, T. P. Belikova, V. F. Gamalii +2 more

The intracavity laser spectroscopy method was used to determine the two-photon absorption of potassium vapor. The two-photon transitions from the ground state 4 2 S 1/2 to the states 6 2 S 1/2 and 4 2 D 3/2,5/2 were detected from absorption in the output spectrum of a wide-band dye laser emitting in the range 760–770 nm; the absorption occurred at a frequency corresponding to the difference between the energies of the upper state and the energy of a ruby laser photon. The ratio ofthe absorption cross section to the square ofthe field was σ 2 / E 2 = 1.5 × 10 −33 ,1.3 × 10 −35 ,and 2.8 × 10 −36 m 4 /V 2 , in satisfactory agreement with calculations carried out on the basis of perturbation theory.

Amplitude-spectral asymmetry of stimulated emission from dye solutions

V. I. Bezrodnyi, N M Narovlyanskaya, Eugene A. Tikhonov

A report is given of a study of the amplitude-spectral asymmetry of the stimulated emission of superfluorescence from dye solutions pumped longitudinally by nanosecond laser pulses. This amplitude asymmetry is manifested by the difference between the powers of the forward and backward waves, and it is a function of the rate of pumping and of the optical density of the active medium. The asymmetry of stimulated emission from a ring laser is manifested by the appearance of a wave with a traveling-wave ratio of ~90 in the absence of any optical isolators. The spectral asymmetry of a ring laser is manifested by a difference between the spectra of strong and weak waves traveling in opposite directions. A quantitative analysis is made of the effects based on the solution of the transfer equations for radiation traveling in a nonlinearly absorbing active medium.

Polariton condensation, superradiance and difference combination parametric resonance in mode-locked laser

Sergei N Bagayev, Rostislav M. Arkhipov, Mikhail V. Arkhipov +3 more

The generation of the ring mode-locked laser containing resonant absorption medium in the cavity was investigated. It is shown that near the strong resonant absorption lines a condensation of polaritons arises. Intensive radiation looks like as superradiance in a medium without population inversion. We studied theoretically the microscopic mechanism of these phenomena. It was shown that in this system in absorbing medium a strong self-induced difference combination parametric resonance exists. Superradiance on polaritonic modes in the absorbing medium are due to the emergence of light-induced resonant polarization as a result of fast periodic nonadiabatic quantum jumps in the absorber.
