Ultrashort optical pulses in two-level systems with Coulomb interaction and defects

Abstract

The dynamics of an ultrashort optical pulse in an ensemble of two-level systems (in particular, in the presence of defects) is considered in the framework of the microscopic pseudospin formalism without limitation on the pulse power in the approximation of unidirectional propagation. The effective equations for the electric field amplitude and polarization of two-level systems are derived and solved numerically. Quasi-soliton modes of propagation of ultrashort optical pulses are revealed and the dependences on the macroscopic Hamiltonian parameters are analyzed. The effect of various types of defects on the propagation of ultrashort pulses is detected.

Dynamics of extremely short pulses in two-level impurity systems in the framework of the glauber approach-=SUP=-1-=/SUP=-

Belonenko M.B., Konobeeva N.N.

In this work, we study the features of the propagation of extremely short optical pulses in a two-level system using the example of a deuterated ferroelectric containing carbon nanotubes. Based on the Heisenberg equation of motion for the average values of the pseudospin operators, as well as the wave equation for the electric field, a numerical simulation of the dynamics of an electromagnetic pulse is carried out. The evolution of the system for various parameters of the problem is demonstrated. Keywords: extremely short pulse, two-level system, carbon nanotubes.

Polarization dynamics of unidirectional optical pulse evolution in a laser amplifier

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

Polarization dynamics of optical pulses in an isotropic two-level medium is analyzed by solving an integrable system of evolution equations without using the slowly varying envelope approximation. The analysis is focused on the regime of unidirectional pulse generation in an initially inverted medium. Qualitative difference in polarization dynamics is revealed between few-cycle and quasi-monochromatic pulse propagation

Dynamical model of coherent circularly polarized optical pulse interactions with two-level quantum systems

Gabriela M. Slavcheva, Ortwin G. Hess

We propose and develop a method for theoretical description of circularly (elliptically) polarized optical pulse resonant coherent interactions with two-level atoms. The method is based on the time-evolution equations of a two-level quantum system in the presence of a time-dependent dipole perturbation for electric dipole transitions between states with total angular-momentum projection difference $(\ensuremath{\Delta}{J}_{z}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1)$ excited by a circularly polarized electromagnetic field [Feynman et al., J. Appl. Phys. 28, 49 (1957)]. The adopted real-vector representation approach allows for coupling with the vectorial Maxwell's equations for the optical wave propagation and thus the resulting Maxwell pseudospin equations can be numerically solved in the time domain without any approximations. The model permits a more exact study of the ultrafast coherent pulse propagation effects taking into account the vector nature of the electromagnetic field and hence the polarization state of the optical excitation. We demonstrate self-induced transparency effects and formation of polarized solitons. The model represents a qualitative extension of the well-known optical Maxwell-Bloch equations valid for linearly polarized light and a tool for studying coherent quantum control mechanisms.

Dynamics of Extremely Short Pulses in an Anisotropic Optical Medium with a Two-Level Impurity System Using Glauber’s Approach

Mikhail B. Belonenko, N. N. Konobeeva

Abstract A study is performed of the propagation of extremely short optical pulses in a two-level impurity system with carbon nanotubes and anisotropic optical properties. A system of effective equations for the vector potential of the electromagnetic field and pseudospin is derived on the basis of Maxwell’s equations, along with kinetic equations for the average values of pseudospin operators obtained according to Glauber. The effect the system parameters (temperature and vector of polarization’s angle of inclination to the CNT axis) have on the spatial characteristics of a extremely short pulse is analyzed.

Nonlinear scattering of ultrashort laser pulses on two-level system

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, Sergey V. Sakhno

The presentation is devoted to the theoretical investigation of nonlinear scattering of ultrashort electromagnetic pulses (USP) on two-level quantum system. We consider the scattering of several types of USP, namely, so called corrected Gaussian pulse (CGP) and cosine wavelet pulse. Such pulses have no constant component in their spectrum in contrast with traditional Gaussian pulse. It should be noted that the presence of constant component in the limit of ultrashort pulse durations leads to unphysical results. The main purpose of the present work is the investigation of the change of pulse temporal shape after scattering as a function of initial phase at different distances from the target. Numerical calculations are based on the solution of Bloch equations and expression for scattering field strength via dipole moment of two-level system exposed by the action of incident USP. In our calculation we also account for the influence of refracting index of the air on electric field strength in the pulse after scattering.

Modified optical bloch equations in nonlocal systems of two-level atoms interacting with ultrashort light pulses

O. N. Gadomskiĭ, S. N. Ivanyakov

Modified optical Bloch equations for two-level atoms in the radiation field with the complex polarization vector, the complex amplitude, and the complex wave vector are derived. A specific case is considered in which a field of this kind acts on a separate atom of a nonlocal atomic system. The solution of the modified equations for the interaction of atoms with ultrashort light pulses is obtained.
