Abstract

In this work, we study the features of the propagation of extremely short optical pulses in a two-level system using the example of a deuterated ferroelectric containing carbon nanotubes. Based on the Heisenberg equation of motion for the average values of the pseudospin operators, as well as the wave equation for the electric field, a numerical simulation of the dynamics of an electromagnetic pulse is carried out. The evolution of the system for various parameters of the problem is demonstrated. Keywords: extremely short pulse, two-level system, carbon nanotubes.

Dynamics of Extremely Short Pulses in an Anisotropic Optical Medium with a Two-Level Impurity System Using Glauber’s Approach

Mikhail B. Belonenko, N. N. Konobeeva

Abstract A study is performed of the propagation of extremely short optical pulses in a two-level impurity system with carbon nanotubes and anisotropic optical properties. A system of effective equations for the vector potential of the electromagnetic field and pseudospin is derived on the basis of Maxwell’s equations, along with kinetic equations for the average values of pseudospin operators obtained according to Glauber. The effect the system parameters (temperature and vector of polarization’s angle of inclination to the CNT axis) have on the spatial characteristics of a extremely short pulse is analyzed.

Ultrashort optical pulses in two-level systems with Coulomb interaction and defects

Mikhail B. Belonenko

The dynamics of an ultrashort optical pulse in an ensemble of two-level systems (in particular, in the presence of defects) is considered in the framework of the microscopic pseudospin formalism without limitation on the pulse power in the approximation of unidirectional propagation. The effective equations for the electric field amplitude and polarization of two-level systems are derived and solved numerically. Quasi-soliton modes of propagation of ultrashort optical pulses are revealed and the dependences on the macroscopic Hamiltonian parameters are analyzed. The effect of various types of defects on the propagation of ultrashort pulses is detected.

Three-dimensional dissipative quasi-solitons in carbon nanotubes

N. N. Konobeeva, Mikhail B. Belonenko

The propagation of three-dimensional quasi-solitons in a system of carbon nanotubes with two-level impurities has been investigated. The system of effective equations is derived in the form of analogs of the Sine–Gordon classical equation and Bloch equations. The effects observed with a change in the inverse population and damping parameter have been studied.

Ultrashort Optical Pulses in Photon Crystals of Carbon Nanotubes under Action of an External Pump Field

Илья Сергеевич Двужилов, Yu. V. Dvuzhilova, Mikhail B. Belonenko

Abstract The evolution of ultrashort optical pulses in a photonic crystal consisting of semiconductor carbon nanotubes in an external pump field is considered. The possibility of stable propagation of electromagnetic pulses in pump and damp fields due to a balance between the dissipative forces and the external field is shown. The long-term stability of the ultrashort optical pulse shape in the case of changes in various parameters of the medium, such as the inhomogeneity period of carbon nanotubes in the photonic crystal and the refractive index modulation depth, is demonstrated.

Amplification of extremely short pulses in optical media

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

The dynamics of pulses with durations comparable to the inverse transition frequency that propagate in an optical medium is studied in terms of two integrable systems of Maxwell-Bloch equations. The first model describes the field interaction with a nondegenerate medium with a permanent dipole moment and permanent external pumping. A general formula is derived for the N -soliton solution. Particular solutions are used as examples to investigate the effect of permanent dipole moment and pumping on the soliton dynamics. The second model describes the interaction between two-component electric-field pulses and a two-level degenerate medium with permanent upper-level pumping. For different initial magnetic-sublevel populations, soliton solutions are used as examples to show that pumping causes a change in polarization dynamics. A two-soliton solution is used to analyze the interaction of solitons in a two-level medium with external pumping.
