Abstract

Nonlinear magneto-optical resonances of the heterogeneous transfer of the charge between atoms, which resonantly interact with the laser radiation, and the surface of the metal or the semiconductor are investigated. The dependence of nonlinear magneto-optical resonances of the surface photoionization of atoms on the values of the angular moment of the energetic levels is analyzed. The possibility of the splitting of the surface photoionization resonance in magnetic field is found.

Near-field effect in the nonlinear resonant optics

Oleg N. Gadomsky, Konstantin V. Krutitsky, Sergey V. Sukhov

The role of near field effect is investigated in the boundary value problem of nonlinear resonant optics at the interaction of steady quasiresonant optical radiation with the film of two-level atoms. Dynamical detuning from resonance, nonlinear index of refraction, reflected and refracted waves are analyzed on the basis of solution of closed system of integral field equation and optical Bloch equations with account for discrete-continuous distribution of two-level atoms. An essential dependence of near field effect upon type of symmetry of atomic distribution is shown.

Near field effect in nonlinear optics of surfaces

Oleg N. Gadomsky, Irina V. Gadomskaya, S. V. Emelyanov

We investigate the boundary-value problem of nonresonant reflection and transmission of probe light wave passing through excited nonlinear semi-infinite medium of three- level atoms. The two lower levels are excited by intensive resonant stationary or nonstationary radiation to obtain the interference of atomic states. Some properties of near field effect in this problem are investigated taking into account retarded polarizing fields and the density-dependent near dipole-dipole interactions. We separate in our consideration three waves: the inversion wave and two polarization waves with corresponding nonlinear indices of refraction.

Dispersion of rotation of polarization plane and circular dichroism for alkaline atoms in intense radiation fields

T. Ya. Karagodova, Anna V. Kuptsova

The method of computer simulations on nonlinear resonant magneto-optical effects developed for real multi-level atoms in the two laser fields of arbitrary intensity and external magnetic field is applied for the polarization effects of different types calculations and investigations of the dependence of the characteristics of these effects on magnetic field strength, intensities, polarizations and detunings of laser fields for alkaline atoms. The essence of the method consists in simulations and analysis of the plots of dependence of quasienergies on parameters (detunings and intensities of radiation fields, magnetic field strength), which are obtained with the help of sorting subprogram, and selection of suitable algorithms for calculations of characteristics of nonlinear resonant magneto-optical effects. One-photon and two photon resonant effects are investigated for wide range of magnetic field strength from Zeeman to Paschen Back effects. Some new features in the spectra of rotation of plane of polarization and circular dicohroizm of different types are predicted. The results show the agreement with known experiments. Such calculations of nonlinear resonant magneto-optical effects in the intense laser fields resonant to adjacent transitions and magnetic field show the opportunity of investigation the modifications of electronic structure due to intense radiation fields and strong external magnetic field in atomic gases and also may be used for the treatment of new methods of phase-polarization selection of modes of tunable lasers.

Magneto-optical force in a resonant field of elliptically polarized light waves

Прудников Олег Николаевич, А. В. Тайченачев, Anatolii M Tumaikin +1 more

In a one-dimensional model we consider the dependence of the magneto-optical force on the elliptical polarization of laser beams for different types of closed atomic transitions ${J}_{g}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{J}_{e}$. The linear dependencies on atomic velocity and magnetic field of the magneto-optical force are found analytically. These results establish the possibility (for ${J}_{g}>0$) to capture atoms in a magneto-optical trap even at zero detuning (i.e., at the exact resonance of atoms with laser field) in certain $(ϵ\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{-}\overline{ϵ})$ field configurations as well as in an anomalous blue-detuned region. The nonlinear dependencies of the force on atomic velocity and magnetic field are studied numerically. The capture velocity and the number of trapped atoms are estimated.

Theory of photoionization in a static magnetic field

Allen M. Flusberg

The effect of a dc magnetic field on the rate at which a ground-level, Zeeman-degenerate atom is photoionized via a short-lived autoionizing level is calculated. We consider single-step as well as two-step photoionization; in the latter case we allow the light to be either resonant or far from resonance with an intermediate level. In all cases we find that the magnetic field may raise the fraction of the atoms available for photoionization and consequently increase the photoion fraction produced by a light pulse of given fluence. In the resonant case we find that if the magnetic-field Zeeman splitting of the ground and intermediate level is much larger than the rate at which population enters or leaves that level then the Zeeman-state populations are decoupled from one another and there exist simple conditions under which they obey rate equations. In the nonresonant case an additional condition for two-photon rate equations is that the optical Stark shift of the ground state be much smaller than the magnetic Zeeman splitting. These results apply specifically to excitation by lasers whose spectral widths are narrow compared to the homogeneous linewidths of the corresponding atomic transitions, but appear to be generalizable to the opposite limit, in which the laser spectral widths are much broader than the homogeneous linewidths.
