Laser spectroscopy of electric-field 1s3d anticrossings of He I

Abstract

Singlet-triplet anticrossings of 1s3d Stark sublevels of He I were investigated by inducing resonance transitions from the 1s2p 3 P level to the 1s3d Stark states at electric fields 80 kV cm -1 <F z <100 kV cm -1 . The measurements were performed using a beam of metastable helium atoms perpendicular to a 588 nm laser beam from a tunable dye laser. From the energy separations of closest approach of four anticrossings we deduced the radial integrals h off 3p =(3660+or-200) MHz and h off 3d (652.6+or-1.0) MHz of the singlet-triplet off-diagonal matrix elements of the spin-orbit coupling for the 1s3p and 1s3d configurations. They agree with recently calculated values.

Precision measurements of electric-field 1snℓ singlet-triplet anticrossings of He I using radio frequency spectroscopy

O Reusch, C Dieste, Sandy Vanessa Garnica +1 more

The energy separations of closest approach were measured for the 1s n ℓ 1 Λ× 3 Λ anticrossings of singlet and triplet Stark states of the 1s4d, 1s5d and 1s5f configurations of He I. Using a fast atomic He beam, a selective population of the upper state of the anticrossing was accomplished by starting with an initial selective excitation of singlet states by 12 keV He-He collisions followed by an adiabatic transit to the electric field of the anticrossing, where radiofrequency transitions were induced. From the resonance signals the energy separations of three 1s4d, four 1s5d and three 1s5f anticrossings were determined. We evaluated the off-diagonal matrix elements of the spin-orbit coupling for the 1s4ℓ and 1s5ℓ configurations from the measured energy separations. The experimental results are compared with the calculated values.

Radiofrequency spectroscopy of electric-field singlet-triplet anticrossings of He I

Y -Q Liu, D. Kaiser, Gebhard von Oppen

Anticrossings of the 1s5d and 1s6d 1 Lambda and 3 Lambda Stark sublevels of He I were investigated using radiofrequency spectroscopy. Single and multiple photon transitions were induced and detected after excitation of thermal He atoms by 10-20 keV ion impact. The energy separations of closest approach of four 1s5d and two 1s6d anticrossings were deduced from the resonance signals.

Anticrossing effects in Stark spectra of helium

Laurentius Windholz, Ryszard Drozdowski, Tomasz J. Wąsowicz +1 more

In the spectral range between 480 nm and 630 nm the Stark effect of the transitions n 1Q-2 1S, n 1Q-2 1P and n 3Q-2 3P (n=3÷10, Q=S, P,...) was studied using electric field up to 1500 kV/cm. For such a high field the Stark splitting becomes greater than the simple structure of the atom. Hence anticrossings of the Stark components of the same magnetic quantum number occur. The experimental results have been compared with the theoretically determined shifts. The results of calculations show good agreement with observation.

Electric-field-induced singlet-triplet anticrossings in helium

H. J. Beyer, K J Kollath

Anticrossing signals have been detected between n 1 D and n 3 D states of neutral He (n=5 to 7) using external electric field and internal singlet-triplet perturbations to couple the crossing states. Improved results for the n 1 D-n 3 D intervals are obtained: 34066.3(7.2), 20918.0(9.2) and 13632.8(5.3) MHz for n=5, 6, 7 respectively. This type of anticrossing also allows the study of the differential Stark effect, the anisotropic susceptibility chi A and the relativistic fine structure of the n 3 D states.

Stark effect in atomic helium in a very high electric field up to 1500 kV/cm

Laurentius Windholz, Ryszard Drozdowski, Jerzy Kwela +1 more

In the spectral range between 480 nm and 630 nm the Stark effect of the transitions n1Q-21S, n1Q-21P and n3Q-23P(n=3÷9, Q=S, P,...) was studied using electric field up to 1500 kV/cm. For such a high field the Stark splitting becomes greater than the simple structure of the atom. Hence, anticrossings of the Stark components of the same magnetic quantum number occur. The experimental results have been compared with the theoretically determined shifts. The results of caluclations show good agreement with observation not only for low field values, but also in high fields and in case of level anticrossings.

Stark effect of atomic Helium singlet lines

We present experimental and theoretical investigations of the He spectral series 2S1−nQ1 (n=3÷9, Q=S,P,D,…,n−1) and 2P1−nQ1 (n=3÷9, Q=S,P,D,…,n−1) in electric fields up to 1635 kV/cm. Apart from the allowed transitions with |ΔL|=1, the transitions with |ΔL|=0,2,3,…—without field strictly forbidden—were observed. Several He patterns become similar to hydrogen patterns, which means they are nearly symmetric and show in higher fields nearly linear Stark shifts. The applied fields are high enough that patterns belonging to neighboring principal quantum numbers (for n>6) begin to overlap, which leads to interesting level-anticrossing effects. The experimental results are compared with numerical calculations, taking into account mixing between states of different principal quantum numbers and between singlet and triplet states. The agreement between experimental and theoretical results is quite good.
