Abstract

Abstract Using the density matrix formalism for a three‐level system, the dielectric function is derived in the presence of two exciting light fields. Different limiting situations are discussed, the approximations involved and their respective validity.

Dispersion and Absorption Anomalies in Three‐Level Systems

B. Hönerlage, J.‐Y. Bigot

Abstract Using the density‐matrix formalism, the dielectric function of athree‐level system under high excitation conditions is determined. The density matrix being calculated by a continuous matrix inversion, non‐resonant contributions and saturation effects can be fully accounted for and the stability of absorption and dispersion anomalies may be discussed.

On the Dielectric Function of Three‐Level Systems under High Excitation. II. Exciton—Biexciton Transitions and Population Effects in CuCl

B. Hönerlage, J.‐Y. Bigot

Abstract Using the dielectric function calculated for a three‐level system in the presence of two coherent light fields, renormalization effects are discussed due to a finite level population, to two‐photon transitions, and to exciton—biexcition transitions for CuCl.

Time evolution of the dielectric function in a three-level system under pulsed excitation

J.-Y. Bigot, J. Miletic, B. Hönerlage

We calculate the dielectric function of three-level systems like CuCl under high pulsed excitation in the nanosecond time scale. We find a memory effect of the crystal absorption and dispersion which is mainly due to the radiative lifetimes of the biexcitons created during the pulse.

Interaction of a three-level system with two strong fields

Ludmila S. Kancheva, D. I. Pushkarov

General expressions for the steady-state population distribution and complex susceptibilities of a three-level system interacting with two strong near-resonant electromagnetic fields are obtained using a density-matrix formalism. A complete treatment of the steady-state population distribution established in the three-level system, under the action of two strong fields with arbitrary resonance detunings is presented. The criterion for maximal populations of the exciting levels, as well as conditions in which the population of the exciting levels exceeds the population of the ground state are found. The modification of the absorption and emission lines with increasing intensity of the second (probe) field is considered. The emphasis in the present treatment, as distinct from Panock and Temkin (see IEEE J. Quantum Electron., vol.QE-13, p.476 (1977)) is on the consideration of the arbitrary distribution of the equilibrium populations of the system which exhibits a number of interesting features which have not been previously discussed.

Nonlinear Optical Effects in a System with Degenerate or Closely Spaced Levels in Solids

Viktor A Kovarskii, E. Yu. Perlin

Abstract The influence of two external high‐frequency electric fields (one of them being the field of strong laser beam) on a three‐level system with doubly degenerated excited states is considered. The change of the refractive index and of the ground‐frequency light‐absorption coefficient in the presence of laser radiation are predicted.
