Determination of the Parameters Characterizing a Two Lines Spectrum by Measuring n(2)(T): Rectangular Profiles Approximation

Abstract

In the present paper we study the possibility of analyzing a light beam with a spectrum of two lines, by measuring the normalized second order factorial moment of the photon-counting distribution of the light beam. Two lines with rectangular profile are considered in order to simplify calculations and experiments. The error in the determination of width, separation and relative height of lines is studied by means of an experimentally checked theoretical model.

Analysis of a spectrum of two Lorentzian or Gaussian lines by measuring n^(2)(T)

Felipe González, M. Á. Rebolledo, Manuel P. Cagigal

In this paper we study the possibility of analyzing a low intensity light beam whose spectrum has two lines with Lorentzian or Gaussian profiles by measuring n(2)(T) (the normalized second-order factorial moment). To do this the spectrum is scanned periodically by a spectrometer, and the normalized second-order factorial moment of the beam intensity at the exit aperture of the spectrometer is measured. The errors involved in the determination of the width, relative height, and separation between the two lines are calculated and discussed.

Level-crossing detection through measurement of the second factorial moment of photon-counting distribution

M. Á. Rebolledo, J. J. Sanz

A level-crossing detection method is presented and developed based on measurement of the normalized second factorial moment n((2))(T) of the photon-counting distribution of the resultant fluorescence. Expression n((2))(T) is obtained, and the errors expected in the determination of signal width and crossing field are theoretically studied. The validity of the approximations performed to establish the theoretical model is proved by an experiment with a square-wave periodically modulated light beam.

Factorial Moment of Two Poissonian Lights Superposed on Gaussian-Lorentzian Light

Hideaki Satō, Norihito Suzuki

A photon counting method is adapted to spectroscopy in very low intensity, as it is useful for data acquisition. There are two Poissonian lights which cannot be discriminated by this method. One is coherent light, and the other is Gaussian-Lorentzian light with infinite spectral linewidth. In this experiment, Gaussian-Lorentzian light with finite spectral linewidth was superposed on each Poissonian light, and the difference of the two radiation mechanisms was determined by profiles of the second-order factorial moment of the photon counting distribution.

Photon Counting Statistics of Thermal Light Consisting of Two Spectral Lines

N. Tornau, B. Echtermeyer

The generating function for the photon counting distribution is calculated for polarized thermal light in the case that the spectral profile of the light is a superposition of two LORENTZian lines with the same central frequency but different halfwidth at half height. Further we present results for the moments of the counting distribution in this case and also for a frequency separation of both line-centers.

Analysis of a periodically modulated light beam by measurement of the moment-generating function of the number of photopulses

Felipe González, Fernando G. Moreno

We analyze a low-intensity square-wave modulated light signal by measuring the moment-generating function of the number of photopulses, Qn(s, T). The behavior of the experimental errors in the determination of the period and the modulation factor of the signal is studied by means of a theoretical error model. A set of experimental measurements was carried out, and the results found through the Qn(s, T) measurement and by the normalized second-order factorial moment n(2)(T) are compared.
