Abstract

Potential application of elementary excitation in semiconductor quantum dot to quantum computation is discussed. Construction of scalable hardware and all optical implementation of logical gate that exploits discrete nature of electron-hole states and their well concentrated oscillator strenth for ultrafast gate operation are proposed. Rabi population oscillation of an excitonic two-level system in an isolated single InxGa1-xAs quantum dot is manifested by a quantum wave function interferometry in time domain, demonstrating a long lived coherence of zero-dimensional excitonic states and revealed the coherent population flopping under strong optical field. A phase-sensitive coherent gate operation on single-dot exciton qubit is demonstrated.

This paper discusses the potential application of elementary excitation in semiconductor quantum dots to quantum computation. We propose a scalable hardware design and all-optical implementation of logical gates that exploit the discrete nature of electron and hole states and their well-concentrated oscillator strength for ultrafast gate operations. We also propose a multiple-bit design based on the nearest neighbor dipole-dipole coupling. Exciton Rabi Oscillation in Single Isolated Quantum Dots

The Rabi population oscillation of a single excitonic two-level system in an isolated InxGa1—xAs quantum dot was examined by quantum wave function interferometry in the time domain. The corresponding energy splitting was also confirmed in an energy-domain measurement. Two-pulse dipole interference on an excited excitonic state revealed a long-lived coherence of zero-dimensional excitonic states and demonstrated coherent population flopping under a strong optical field.

An All-Optical Quantum Gate in a Semiconductor Quantum Dot

We report coherent optical control of a biexciton (two electron-hole pairs), confined in a single quantum dot, that shows coherent oscillations similar to the excited-state Rabi flopping in an isolated atom. The pulse control of the biexciton dynamics, combined with previously demonstrated control of the single-exciton Rabi rotation, serves as the physical basis for a two-bit conditional quantum logic gate. The truth table of the gate shows the features of an all-optical quantum gate with interacting yet distinguishable excitons as qubits. Evaluation of the fidelity yields a value of 0.7 for the gate operation. Such experimental capability is essential to a scheme for scalable quantum computation by means of the optical control of spin qubits in dots.

Exciton Rabi oscillation: coherently manipulate zero-dimensional quantum states by light

Summary form only given. Optical Rabi oscillations are the most essential physics that coherent optical control of the quantum states relies on. Observation of the exciton population flopping thus can be a first step to the coherent control. In this contribution, we report the Rabi oscillation of an isolated excitonic two-level system in a disk-shaped In/sub x/Ga/sub 1-x/As quantum dot. Control of population and phase of single-dot exciton is demonstrated.

Exciton Rabi Oscillation in a Single Quantum Dot

A spectroscopic method, which enables characterization of a single isolated quantum dot and a quantum wave function interferometry, is applied to an exciton discrete excited state in an InGaAs quantum dot. Long coherence of zero-dimensional excitonic states made possible the observation of coherent population flopping in a 0D excitonic two-level system in a time-domain interferometric measurement. Corresponding energy splitting is also manifested in an energy-domain measurement.
