Abstract

We report coherent optical control of a biexciton (two electron-hole pairs), confined in a single quantum dot, that shows coherent oscillations similar to the excited-state Rabi flopping in an isolated atom. The pulse control of the biexciton dynamics, combined with previously demonstrated control of the single-exciton Rabi rotation, serves as the physical basis for a two-bit conditional quantum logic gate. The truth table of the gate shows the features of an all-optical quantum gate with interacting yet distinguishable excitons as qubits. Evaluation of the fidelity yields a value of 0.7 for the gate operation. Such experimental capability is essential to a scheme for scalable quantum computation by means of the optical control of spin qubits in dots.

Two-qubit conditional quantum-logic operation in a single self-assembled quantum dot

The four-level exciton/biexciton system of a single semiconductor quantum dot acts as a two-qubit register. We experimentally demonstrate an exciton-biexciton Rabi rotation conditional on the initial exciton spin in a single InGaAs/GaAs dot. This forms the basis of an optically gated two-qubit controlled rotation (CROT) quantum-logic operation where an arbitrary exciton spin is selected as the target qubit using the polarization of the control laser.

Quantum gate operation of exciton qubits in semiconductor quantum dots

Hidehiko Kamada, Hideki Gotoh, Hiroaki Ando +2 more

Potential application of elementary excitation in semiconductor quantum dot to quantum computation is discussed. Construction of scalable hardware and all optical implementation of logical gate that exploits discrete nature of electron-hole states and their well concentrated oscillator strenth for ultrafast gate operation are proposed. Rabi population oscillation of an excitonic two-level system in an isolated single InxGa1-xAs quantum dot is manifested by a quantum wave function interferometry in time domain, demonstrating a long lived coherence of zero-dimensional excitonic states and revealed the coherent population flopping under strong optical field. A phase-sensitive coherent gate operation on single-dot exciton qubit is demonstrated.

This paper discusses the potential application of elementary excitation in semiconductor quantum dots to quantum computation. We propose a scalable hardware design and all-optical implementation of logical gates that exploit the discrete nature of electron and hole states and their well-concentrated oscillator strength for ultrafast gate operations. We also propose a multiple-bit design based on the nearest neighbor dipole-dipole coupling. Rabi population oscillation of an excitonic two-level system in an isolated single In xGa1-xAs quantum dot is manifested by quantum wave function interferometry in the time domain, demonstrating a long lived coherence of zero-dimensional excitonic states and revealing the coherent population flopping under strong optical field. Phase-sensitive coherent gate operations on a single-dot exciton qubit are demonstrated.

An optically induced and detected Bell-like state in a single quantum dot

Summary form only given. A single quantum dot (QD) exciton is considered as a basic unit capable of carrying one bit of quantum information (qubit). Reference has demonstrated exciton Rabi oscillations in single QD's that are equivalent to single-bit rotations. To realize two-bit quantum logic operations in the next step, it is essential to identify and coherently manipulate two interacting single QD excitons. Our earlier work shows that two-exciton entangled states not involving the biexciton can be optically induced. This paper extends the entanglement to include the biexciton and show that all four basis states of the two-exciton system can be coherently manipulated based on a coherent nonlinear optical spectroscopy technique.

Technologies that will realize and facilitate the exciton quantum computing are discussed.
