Order parameter, correlation functions, and fidelity susceptibility for the BCS model in the thermodynamic limit

Omar El Araby, D. Baeriswyl

The exact ground state of the reduced BCS Hamiltonian is investigated numerically for large system sizes and compared with the BCS ansatz. A ``canonical'' order parameter is found to be equal to the largest eigenvalue of Yang's reduced density matrix in the thermodynamic limit. Moreover, the limiting values of the exact analysis agree with those obtained for the BCS ground state. Exact results for the ground-state energy, level occupations, and a pseudospin-pseudospin correlation function are also found to converge to the BCS values already for relatively small system sizes. However, discrepancies persist for a pair-pair correlation function, for interlevel correlations of occupancies and for the fidelity susceptibility, even for large system sizes where these quantities have visibly converged to well-defined limits. Our results indicate that there exist nonperturbative corrections to the BCS predictions in the thermodynamic limit.

Coexistence of strong pairing correlations and itinerant ferromagnetism arising from spin asymmetric bandwidths: A reduced BCS model study

Zu‐Jian Ying, Mario Cuoco, Canio Noce +1 more

We investigate the conditions for the occurrence of the coexisting phases that exhibit singlet superconductivity and itinerant ferromagnetism arising from spin asymmetric bandwidths. The exact solution for a reduced BCS pairing model with spin dependent bandwidths is used to determine the ground-state diagram as a function of the coupling parameter, the total density, and the topology of the single-particle spectrum. A spin-polarized superconducting state is obtained in the regime of large pair couplings with a strong bandwidth asymmetry. The analysis reveals that, for such a type of ferromagnetism, small (large) values of the density of states at energies close to the edges of the band enhance (hinder) the tendency toward a coexistence of strong pairing correlations and finite spin polarizations.

Fermionic entanglement in itinerant systems

Paolo Zanardi A, Xiaoguang Wang

We study pairwise quantum entanglement in systems of fermions itinerant in a lattice from a second-quantized perspective. Entanglement in the grand-canonical ensemble is studied, both for energy eigenstates and for the thermal state. Relations between entanglement and superconducting correlations are discussed in a BCS-like model and for η-pair superconductivity.
