Abstract

We investigate the conditions for the occurrence of the coexisting phases that exhibit singlet superconductivity and itinerant ferromagnetism arising from spin asymmetric bandwidths. The exact solution for a reduced BCS pairing model with spin dependent bandwidths is used to determine the ground-state diagram as a function of the coupling parameter, the total density, and the topology of the single-particle spectrum. A spin-polarized superconducting state is obtained in the regime of large pair couplings with a strong bandwidth asymmetry. The analysis reveals that, for such a type of ferromagnetism, small (large) values of the density of states at energies close to the edges of the band enhance (hinder) the tendency toward a coexistence of strong pairing correlations and finite spin polarizations.

Superconductivity in a model of two Hubbard chains coupled with ferromagnetic exchange interaction

Tomonori Shirakawa, Satoshi Nishimoto, Y. Ohta

We study the ground-state properties of the double-chain Hubbard model coupled with ferromagnetic exchange interaction by using the weak-coupling theory, density-matrix renormalization-group technique, and Lanczos exact-diagonalization method. We determine the ground-state phase diagram in the parameter space of the ferromagnetic exchange interaction and band filling. We find that, in high electron-density regime, the spin gap opens and the spin-singlet ${d}_{xy}$-wave-like pairing correlation is most dominant, whereas in low electron-density regime, the fully-polarized ferromagnetic state is stabilized where the spin-triplet ${p}_{y}$-wave-like pairing correlation is most dominant.

Coexistence of Spin-Triplet Superconductivity with Antiferromagnetism in Orbitally Degenerate System: Hartree-Fock Approximation

M. Zegrodnik, Józef Spałek

We consider the coexistence of the Hund's-rule-exchange induced spin-triplet paired state with the antiferromagnetic ordering by starting from the extended Hubbard model for a doubly degenerate band.We use the density of states appropriate for the square lattice and treat the problem in the HartreeFock approximation. The temperature dependences of the superconducting gaps, the magnetic moment, and the chemical potential are presented. The free energy in the considered phase is evaluated, as well as the corresponding free energies in four additional phases: paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, superconducting of type A and superconducting of type A1 coexisting with ferromagnetism; they occur in the proper range of parameters: band lling n and the interaction parameters U/W and J/W .The low temperature values of the superconducting gaps and staggered magnetic moment are also analyzed as a function of band lling.

Coexistence of pairing tendencies and ferromagnetism in a doped two-orbital Hubbard model on two-leg ladders

J. C. Xavier, G. Alvarez, Adriana Moreo +1 more

Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group and two-leg ladders, we investigate an electronic two-orbital Hubbard model including plaquette-diagonal hopping amplitudes. Our goal is to search for regimes where charges added to the undoped state form pairs, presumably a precursor of a superconducting state. For the electronic density $\ensuremath{\rho}=2$, i.e., the undoped limit, our investigations show a robust $(\ensuremath{\pi},0)$ antiferromagnetic ground state, as in previous investigations. Doping away from $\ensuremath{\rho}=2$ and for large values of the Hund coupling $J$, a ferromagnetic region is found to be stable. Moreover, when the interorbital on-site Hubbard repulsion is smaller than the Hund coupling, i.e., for ${U}^{\ensuremath{'}}<J$ in the standard notation of multiorbital Hubbard models, our results indicate the coexistence of pairing tendencies and ferromagnetism close to $\ensuremath{\rho}=2$. These results are compatible with previous investigations using one-dimensional systems. Although further research is needed to clarify if the range of couplings used here is of relevance for real materials, such as superconducting heavy fermions or pnictides, our theoretical results address a possible mechanism for pairing that may be active in the presence of short-range ferromagnetic fluctuations.

Triplet superconductivity in a 1D itinerant electron system with transverse spin anisotropy

C. Dziurzik, G. I. Japaridze, Andreas Schadschneider +2 more

In this paper we study the ground state phase diagram of a one-dimensional t-J-U model away from half-filling. In the large-bandwidth limit and for ferromagnetic exchange with easy-plane anisotropy a phase with gapless charge and massive spin excitations, characterized by the coexistence of triplet superconducting and spin density wave instabilities is realized in the ground state. With increasing ferromagnetic exchange transitions into a ferrometallic and then a spin gapped triplet superconducting phase take place.

Singlet, triplet, and mixed all-to-all pairing states emerging from incoherent fermions

Jagannath Sutradhar, Jonathan Ruhman, Avraham Klein

The electron-electron and electron-phonon coupling in complex materials can be more complicated than simple density-density interactions, involving intertwined dynamics of spin, charge, and spatial symmetries. This motivates studying universal models with complex interactions and whether BCS-type singlet pairing is still the “natural” fate of the system. To this end, we construct a Yukawa-SYK model with nonlocal couplings in both spin and charge channels. Furthermore, we provide for time-reversal-symmetry breaking dynamics by averaging over the Gaussian unitary ensemble rather than the orthogonal ensemble. We find that the ground state of the system can be an orbitally nonlocal superconducting state arising from incoherent fermions with no BCS-like analog. The superconductivity has an equal tendency to triplet and singlet pairing states separated by a non-Fermi liquid phase. We further study the fate of the system within the superconducting phase and find that the expected ground state, away from the critical point, is a mixed singlet/triplet state. Finally, we find that, while at T c the triplet and singlet transitions are dual to one another, below T c the duality is broken, with the triplet state more susceptible to orbital fluctuations just by its symmetry. Our results indicate that such fluctuation-induced mixed states may be an inherent feature of strongly correlated materials. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Itinerant ferromagnetism in the two-dimensionalt- t′ Hubbard model

Liliana Arrachea

Using exact diagonalization techniques, the Hubbard model with hopping between nearest (t) and next-nearest neighbors ${(t}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ is studied in a two-dimensional cluster with $4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4$ sites. Within a range of values of ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}<0$ and low densities, states with different total spin are degenerate in the noninteracting system. At a finite value of the Coulomb repulsion U, states with high spin are energetically favored and the ground state can be fully polarized. The behavior of the density of states differs from that obtained within the Hartree-Fock approximation. The low energy region of the density of states (DOS) for the majority spins remains weakly modified by U. Our results bring further support to the idea that itinerant ferromagnetism occurs in strongly correlated systems with high noninteracting DOS at the bottom of the band.
