Singlet, triplet, and mixed all-to-all pairing states emerging from incoherent fermions

Abstract

The electron-electron and electron-phonon coupling in complex materials can be more complicated than simple density-density interactions, involving intertwined dynamics of spin, charge, and spatial symmetries. This motivates studying universal models with complex interactions and whether BCS-type singlet pairing is still the “natural” fate of the system. To this end, we construct a Yukawa-SYK model with nonlocal couplings in both spin and charge channels. Furthermore, we provide for time-reversal-symmetry breaking dynamics by averaging over the Gaussian unitary ensemble rather than the orthogonal ensemble. We find that the ground state of the system can be an orbitally nonlocal superconducting state arising from incoherent fermions with no BCS-like analog. The superconductivity has an equal tendency to triplet and singlet pairing states separated by a non-Fermi liquid phase. We further study the fate of the system within the superconducting phase and find that the expected ground state, away from the critical point, is a mixed singlet/triplet state. Finally, we find that, while at T c the triplet and singlet transitions are dual to one another, below T c the duality is broken, with the triplet state more susceptible to orbital fluctuations just by its symmetry. Our results indicate that such fluctuation-induced mixed states may be an inherent feature of strongly correlated materials. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Pairing instabilities of the Yukawa-SYK models with controlled fermion incoherence

Wonjune Choi, Omid Tavakol, Yong Baek Kim

The interplay of non-Fermi liquid and superconductivity born out of strong dynamical interactions is at the heart of the physics of unconventional superconductivity. As a solvable platform of the strongly correlated superconductors, we study the pairing instabilities of the Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (Yukawa-SYK) model, which describes spin-1/2 fermions coupled to bosons by the random, all-to-all, spin-independent and dependent Yukawa interactions. In contrast to the previously studied models, the random Yukawa couplings are sampled from a collection of Gaussian ensembles whose variances follow a continuous distribution rather than being fixed to a constant. By tuning the analytic behaviour of the distribution, we could control the fermion incoherence to systematically examine various normal states ranging from the Fermi liquid to non-Fermi liquids that are different from the conformal solution of the SYK model with a constant variance. Using the linearised Eliashberg theory, we show that the onset of the unconventional spin-triplet pairing is preferred with the spin-dependent interactions while all pairing channels show instabilities with the spin-independent interactions. Although the interactions shorten the lifetime of the fermions in the non-Fermi liquid, the same interactions also dress the bosons to strengthen the tendency to pair the incoherent fermions. As a consequence, the onset temperature T_c T c of the pairing is enhanced in the non-Fermi liquid compared to the case of the Fermi liquid.

Revisiting superconductivity in the extended one-band Hubbard model: Pairing via spin and charge fluctuations

Mercè Roig, Astrid Tranum Rømer, P. J. Hirschfeld +1 more

The leading superconducting instabilities of the two-dimensional extended repulsive one-band Hubbard model within spin-fluctuation pairing theory depend sensitively on electron density, band, and interaction parameters. We map out the phase diagrams within a random-phase-approximation spin- and charge-fluctuation approach, and find that while ${B}_{1g}$ (${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$) and ${B}_{2g}$ (${d}_{xy}$) pairing dominates in the absence of repulsive longer-range Coulomb interactions ${V}_{\mathrm{NN}}$, the latter induces pairing in other symmetry channels, including, e.g., ${A}_{2g}$ ($g$-wave), nodal ${A}_{1g}$ (extended $s$-wave), or nodal ${E}_{u}$ ($p$-wave) spin-triplet superconductivity. At the lowest temperatures, transition boundaries in the phase diagrams between symmetry-distinct spin-singlet orders generate complex time-reversal symmetry broken superpositions. By contrast, we find that boundaries between singlet and triplet regions are characterized by first-order transitions. Finally, motivated by recent photoemission experiments, we have determined the influence of an additional explicitly attractive nearest-neighbor interaction, ${V}_{\mathrm{NN}}<0$, on the superconducting gap structure. Depending on the electronic filling, such an attraction boosts ${E}_{u}$ ($p$-wave) spin-triplet or ${B}_{1g}$ (${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$) spin-singlet ordering.

BCS to incoherent superconductivity crossovers in the Yukawa-SYK model on a lattice

Davide Valentinis, Gian Andrea Inkof, Jörg Schmalian

We provide a quantitative and controlled analysis of the phase diagram of the the Yukawa-SYK model on a lattice, in the normal and superconducting states. We analyze the entire crossover from BCS/weak-coupling to Eliashberg/strong coupling superconductivity, as a function of fermion-boson interaction strength and hopping parameter. Cooper pairs of sharp Fermi-liquid quasiparticles at weak coupling evolve into pairing of fully incoherent fermions in the non-Fermi liquid regime. The crossovers leave observable traces in the critical temperature, the zero-temperature and zero-energy gap, the entropy, and the phase stiffness.

Pairing symmetries in the Zeeman-coupled extended attractive Hubbard model

Swagatam Nayak, Navketan Batra, Sanjeev Kumar

By introducing the possibility of equal- and opposite-spin pairings concurrently, we show that the ground state of the extended attractive Hubbard model (EAHM) exhibits rich phase diagrams with a variety of singlet, triplet, and mixed parity superconducting orders. We study the competition between these superconducting pairing symmetries invoking an unrestricted Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-de Gennes (HFBdG) mean-field approach, and we use the d-vector formalism to characterize the nature of the stabilized superconducting orders. We discover that, while all other types of orders are suppressed, a non-unitary triplet order dominates the phase space in the presence of an in-plane external magnetic field. We also find a transition between a non-unitary to unitary superconducting phase driven by the change in average electron density. Our results serve as a reference for identifying and understanding the nature of superconductivity based on the symmetries of the pairing correlations. The results further highlight that EAHM is a suitable effective model for describing most of the pairing symmetries discovered in different materials.

Interplay between superconductivity and non-Fermi liquid at a quantum critical point in a metal. I. The γ model and its phase diagram at T = 0 : The case 0 < γ < 1

Ar. Abanov, Andrey V. Chubukov

Near a quantum critical point in a metal, a strong fermion-fermion interaction, mediated by a soft boson, acts in two different directions: it destroys fermionic coherence and it gives rise to an attraction in one or more pairing channels. The two tendencies compete with each other. We analyze a class of quantum critical models, in which momentum integration and the selection of a particular pairing symmetry can be done explicitly, and the competition between non-Fermi liquid and pairing can be analyzed within an effective model with dynamical electron-electron interaction $V({\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{m})\ensuremath{\propto}1/{|{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{m}|}^{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ (the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ model). In this paper, the first in the series, we consider the case $T=0$ and $0<\ensuremath{\gamma}<1$. We argue that tendency to pairing is stronger, and the ground state is a superconductor. We argue, however, that a superconducting state is highly nontrivial as there exists a discrete set of topologically distinct solutions for the pairing gap ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{n}({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{m})$ ($n=0,1,2,...,\ensuremath{\infty}$). All solutions have the same spatial pairing symmetry, but differ in the time domain: ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{n}({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{m})$ changes sign $n$ times as a function of Matsubara frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{m}$. The $n=0$ solution ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{0}({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{m})$ is sign preserving and tends to a finite value at ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{m}=0$, like in BCS theory. The $n=\ensuremath{\infty}$ solution corresponds to an infinitesimally small $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{m})$, which oscillates down to the lowest frequencies as $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{m})\ensuremath{\propto}|{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{m}{|}^{\ensuremath{\gamma}/2}cos[2\ensuremath{\beta}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}log(|{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{m}|/{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0})]$, where $\ensuremath{\beta}=O(1)$ and ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$ is of order of fermion-boson coupling. As a proof, we obtain the exact solution of the linearized gap equation at $T=0$ on the entire frequency axis for all $0<\ensuremath{\gamma}<1$, and an approximate solution of the nonlinear gap equation. We argue that the presence of an infinite set of solutions opens up a new channel of gap fluctuations. We extend the analysis to the case where the pairing component of the interaction has additional factor $1/N$ and show that there exists a critical ${N}_{cr}>1$, above which superconductivity disappears, and the ground state becomes a non-Fermi liquid. We show that all solutions develop simultaneously once $N$ gets smaller than ${N}_{cr}$.

Unconventional superconducting correlations in fermionic many-body scars

Kiryl Pakrouski, Kirill V. Samokhin

Weak ergodicity breaking in interacting quantum systems may occur due to the existence of a subspace dynamically decoupled from the rest of the Hilbert space. In two-orbital spinful lattice systems, we construct such subspaces that are in addition distinguished by strongest inter-orbital and spin-singlet or spin-triplet, long-range superconducting pairing correlations. All unconventional pairing types we consider are local in space and unitary. Alternatively to orbitals, the additional degree of freedom could originate from the presence of two layers or through any other mechanism. Required Hamiltonians are rather non-exotic and include chemical potential, Hubbard, and spin-orbit interactions typically used for two-orbital superconducting materials. Each subspace is spanned by a family of group-invariant quantum many-body scars combining both 2e and 4e pairing/clustering contributions. One of the basis states has the form of a BCS wavefunction and can always be made the ground state by adding a mean-field pairing potential. Analytical results in this work are lattice-, dimension- and (mostly) system size-independent. We confirm them by exact numerical diagonalization in small systems.
