Injected-field optical bistability model of squeezed coherent light generation

Abstract

We show how the squeezed vacuum fields generated in collective fluorescence within a high-finesse cavity can be transformed into squeezed coherent states with high brightness but with the same degree of noise suppression. The transformation is achieved by an injected signal that creates a mean polarization and squeezing in the high rather than the low branch of the optical bistable collective radiation. Analytical expressions are obtained for the limit of weak excitation of the atomic media. Comparisons with results obtained using rigged-reservoir theories and also from a multi- stage attenuator are made. The limitations of the model are discussed.

Squeezed-state generation in optical bistability

Luis A. Orozco, Mark G. Raizen, Min Xiao +2 more

Experiments to generate squeezed states of light are described for a collection of two-level atoms within a high-finesse cavity. The investigation is conducted in a regime for which the weak-field coupling of atoms to the cavity mode produces a splitting in the normal mode structure of the atom–field system that is large compared with the atomic linewidth. Reductions in photocurrent noise of 30% (−1.55 dB) below the noise level set by the vacuum state of the field are observed in a balanced homodyne detector. A degree of squeezing of approximately 50% is inferred for the field state in the absence of propagation and detection losses. The observed spectrum of squeezing extends over a very broad range of frequencies (~±75 MHz), with the frequency of best squeezing corresponding to an offset from the optical carrier given by the normal mode splitting.

High Photon-Number Squeezing in Strong Field Limit

Qian Feng, HUANG HONG-BIN, Qi Guan-Xiao

We show that high photon-number squeezing in bright light can be generated in both lasers and optical bistabilities by the injections of a squeezed vacuum and a classical field, and the high squeezing is maintained for very strong field.

Effect of a squeezed vacuum input on optical bistability

János A. Bergou, D. Zhao

We discuss the optical bistable behavior of a system of N two-level atoms pumped by a coherent input field and coupled to a squeezed vacuum field by treating the optical bistability of such a system as an input-output problem. We consider the equation of motion for atomic dipole moments, coupled to the cavity field and the squeezed vacuum, and the boundary condition connecting the input and output fields with the atomic lowering operator. A simple analytical expression for the influence of the squeezed vacuum input on the bistable behavior of the output field is derived by this method. The results indicate a strong influence of the squeezed vacuum input on optical bistability. The squeezed (stretched) vacuum input field tends to increase (decrease) the range of optical bistability.

Multiple Effective Two-photon Correlatedemission Optical Bistability with Injected Squeezed Vacuum

A new kind of optical bistability—the correlatedemission optical bistability(CEOB) in which coherently pumped atoms with n-1 almost degenerate lowlevels and m+1 almost degenerate upper levels are injected into a cavity randomly, and undergo multiple effective two-photon transitions in the cavity has been studies. The results show that the effective two-photon CEOB can generate phasesqueezed state of light from an ordinary vacuum only in the low branch of CEOB, and perfect photonnumber squeezings of light from a squeezed vacuum only in the high branch of CEOB. It is also find that the critical values of cooperativity C and the operations of CEOBs are all affected by atomic coherences and atomic populations.

Fluorescent spectrum of a single atom in a cavity with injected squeezed vacuum

Perry R. Rice, Leno M. Pedrotti

We consider a two-level atom in an optical cavity driven by a coherent field and coupled to broadband squeezed vacuum. In the bad-cavity limit, the cavity field can be adiabatically eliminated, leaving equations of motion for atomic operators similar to those of free-space resonance fluorescence. We calculate the incoherent spectrum of the fluorescent light field and find that the cavity-enhanced spontaneous emission can be suppressed, and a subnatural linewidth obtained, for the correct choice of the phase of the squeezed input relative to the coherent driving field.
