Double‐mode Two‐photon Absorption and Enhanced Photon Antibunching Due to Interference

Abstract

Abstract Inspired by results of interfering signal and idler from a nondegenerate parametric amplifier we investigate the photon statistics of the resulting field after interference of two components subjected to double‐mode two‐photon absorption. This absorption process leads to a strong correlation of the participating modes, which can be used to generate fields with photon antibunching in interference experiments. In addition the photon number can be made small, which produces enhanced antibunching.

Anticorrelations in Nondegenerate Parametric Three‐Wave Interaction

Henryk Paul, W. Brunner

Abstract It is shown that the anticorrelations in the photon numbers of the signal and the idler wave, respectively, generated in parametric three‐wave interaction under suitable conditions, violate an inequality well‐known in classical communication theory. Hence, it must be concluded that these anticorrelations reflect a typical quantum mechanical feature of light. In fact, this nonclassical behaviour is responsible for the occurrence of photon antibunching in the superposition field made up of both the signal and the idler wave, as will be pointed out in some detail.

Photon antibunching

Henryk Paul

A review is given of recent theoretical studies devoted to the problem of generating radiation fields that exhibit the opposite of the well-known bunching of photons observed in light from thermal sources, the so-called antibunching effect. It is made clear that this phenomenon reflects the corpuscular nature of light and, hence, cannot be interpreted in terms of classical electrodynamics, needing, instead, the quantum-mechanical formalism for its description. It is shown in some detail that nonlinear interaction mechanisms like multiphoton absorption and parametric three-wave interaction are suited to change the photon statistical properties of incident (in most cases coherent) light such that the output field will be endowed with antibunching properties. Special emphasis is given to the problem of correctly specifying the dimensions of the mode volume occurring in the usual single-mode treatment of the field, which is, in fact, of great practical interest, since the magnitude of the antibunching effect is determined by the inverse average number of photons contained in that volume. In a later section it is pointed out that destructive interference with a coherent reference beam provides a means of (a) effectively enhancing photon antibunching that is already present in a high-intensity field, through reduction of the intensity, and (b) transforming phase fluctuations produced in a Kerr medium into antibunching-type intensity fluctuations. On the other hand, there exists a way of directly generating light with antibunching properties, the physical mechanism being resonance fluorescence from a single atom. The main features of this technique, both theoretical and experimental, are outlined, including a discussion of the first experimental results obtained a few years ago.

Quantum-interference-assisted photon blockade in a cavity via parametric interactions

Bijita Sarma, Amarendra K. Sarma

We propose a scheme to achieve a strong photon antibunching with a degenerate optical parametric amplifier coupled to a cavity via unconventional photon blockade. The photon blockade occurs as a result of the suppression of two-photon excitation due to a quantum interference effect between different transition paths. Via analytical calculations, we find out the conditions for optimized photon antibunching in terms of parametric gain and the parametric amplifier pump phase. Calculations of second-order correlation function demonstrate strong photon antibunching. The numerical results are compared with the analytical results and both are in complete agreement. Under the optimal parameters, the system can be used to generate sub-Poissonian light.

Antibunched photon-pair source based on photon blockade in a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator

Yi Ren, Shouhui Duan, Wenzhi Xie +2 more

Nonclassical light sources, such as correlated photon pairs, play an important role in quantum optics and quantum information processing systems. This study proposes a process to generate antibunched photon pairs in a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator. It is found that when the parameters of the system satisfy certain conditions, the generated photons in subharmonic modes exhibit a strong antibunching behavior and are strongly correlated with one another. In particular, the average photon-pair number is resonantly enhanced. It is also observed that the conventional photon blockade contributes to this phenomenon. In addition, it is interesting to note that fundamental mode photons can blockade the subharmonic mode photons. We refer to this phenomenon as a heterogeneous photon blockade.

Photon antibunching in pulsed squeezed light generated via parametric amplification

Masato Koashi, K. Kono, Takuya Hirano +1 more

We have measured the intensity correlation of pulsed squeezed light generated by a degenerate optical parametric amplifier seeding weak coherent input signal. When the signal was deamplified, the correlation showed antibunching and the probability distribution of the photon number was sub-Poissonian, both of these being nonclassical properties of light.

Quantum Statistics of Quadratic Optical Parametric Processes with Intense Coherent or Stochastic Pumping: Photon statistics

Vlasta Peřinová, Jan Peřina

The photon statistics of quadratic parametric two-mode processes are derived starting from the results of the first part of this paper. A general theory is presented and particular processes are discussed. Assuming the initial field to be coherent, fluctuations of the pumping field are taken into account. The effects of antibunching and anticorrelation of photons on the photon distribution, its factorial moments, fluctuations in modes and their correlations for the amplification process are demonstrated and their dependence on levels of pumping field fluctuations is shown.
