Abstract

We propose a new optical bistable device (OBD), which is constructed by connecting two symmetrical fiber Bragg gratings with a ytterbium-doped fiber to form a nonlinear Fabry–Perot cavity. The principle of this new OBD is described using the transfer-matrix method, and the two groups of transmitted and reflected optical bistability loops under different parameters are investigated symmetrically. Compared with single fiber Bragg grating switching, whose switching power is greater than 2 kW, this new device has evident merits in reducing the switching power to less than 45 mW.

A study and modeling of Fabry-Perot cavities with rare earth doped fiber

Sławomir Cięszczyk, Jacek Klimek, Krzysztof Skorupski +1 more

This paper presents properties of all-optical bistable fibre switch using two fibre Bragg gratings and rare earth elements doped optical fiber. It is not possible to obtain bistable properties at low switching power level in case of a single fibre grating. In this article the method of optical switching that uses all-optical switch has been proposed. It has been achieved by varying the refractive index of nonlinear optical material as a result of light signal amplitude changes. Presented optical bistable device can be used both in contemporary optically switched networks as well as in optoelectronic sensors, owing to their high achievable resolution.

Bistability of ultrashort pulses in FBG under different nonlinearity profiles

Paulo Victor Ferreira Pinto, T. M. Pessoa, J. M. Jacinto +3 more

In this work, we studied the optical bistability of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) under nonlinear regime, considering three increasing and decreasing profiles of nonlinearity: linear, quadratic and exponential. We varied the nonlinearity range in each profile, and obtained different curves of bistability and reflectivity. We analyzed the powers [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], as well as the width of the photonic band gap ([Formula: see text] of each device under different nonlinearity profiles, and we observed the changes in reflectivity of the FBG. The power intensities [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] obtained for the bistability of decreasing profiles were lower than those obtained for the increasing profiles, and the values of [Formula: see text] were also lower in decreasing profiles, which is useful for optical switching applications.

Optical bistability in fiber ring resonator containing an erbium doped fiber amplifier and quantum dot doped fiber saturable absorber

In this paper we study the optical bistability in a double coupler fiber ring resonator which consists of an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in half part of the fiber ring and a quantum dot doped fiber (QDF) saturable absorber in the other half. The bistability is provided by the QDF section of the ring resonator. The EDFA is employed to reduce the switching power. The transmitted and reflected bistability characteristics are investigated. It is shown that the switching power for this new bistable device is less than 10 mW.
