Abstract

An investigation was made of the generation of powerful stimulated IR radiation in caesium vapour under conditions of an isolated resonance with a transition between the first excited P state and a high S or D level. The main relationships governing the appearance of stimulated IR radiation were established.

Stimulated IR emission in an optically pumped cesium vapour

M. G. Sitnikov, Nikolay V Znamenskiy, Eduard A. Manykin +2 more

It is demonstrated that the optical pumping of a Cs vapour with light pulses of a dye laser tunable within the range of 15390–17920 cm -1 gives rise to high-power stimulated IR emission on several atomic transitions. Analysis of threshold, energy, and spectral characteristics of this emission allowed the mechanism underlying this effect to be explained.

Generation of stimulated IR radiation in Cs vapor under optical pumping

N. I. Znamenskii, Eduard A. Manykin, Evgenii A Petrenko +2 more

It has been first established that the optical pumping of cesium vapor by pulse dye laser, tunable within the range 17020 cm1 - 19200 CM-1 and 20150 cm-1 - 21390 cm-1, lead to the powerful stimulated IR radiation on several atomic transitions. The mechanism of this phenomenon has been suggested.

Generation of IR stimulated radiation, UV visible violet coherent radiation by two-photon resonance pumping in K vapor

Zugeng Wang, X. L. Tang, Kiachang Zhang +1 more

A series of IR stimulated and c scade stimulated radiation (ws) were detected when the 7S state of potassium was populsted by two-photon resonance excitation. Nine UV coherent radiation lines (wP) were generated through the two-photon resonant four-wave mixing wP=2wL-ws. By the second four-wave mixing process wc = wP-w's ws, a gereies of UV and violet coherent radiation were formed. The schemes for generating IR stimul ted and UV, violet coherent radiation were discussed in this paper.

Two-photon Resonance Dichroism in Caesium Vapours

S.T. Yezekian, S.A. Michaelian, K.B. Petrossian +1 more

Caesium vapours are shown to become dichroic when the conditions for two-photon resonance excitation are created for the 6S1/2–7S1/2 transition. The observed phenomenon may be explained by the dependence of two-photon resonance absorption on the beam polarization in accordance with the selection rules for transitions between the magnetic sub-levels of 6S1/2 and 7S1/2 states.

Effect of the pump absorption on generation of infrared stimulated electronic Raman scattering in alkali-metal vapors

A. I. Agafonov, G. G. Grigoryan, Nikolay V Znamenskiy +5 more

The main properties of infrared stimulated electronic Raman scattering (SERS) at the 6 2 S 1/2 -7 2 S 1/2, 3/2 transitions in cesium atoms are studied theoretically and experimentally as functions of the atomic concentration, which was varied from 10 11 to 10 16 cm −3 . It is found that the efficiency of generation of Stokes radiation strongly depends on one-photon absorption of the pump radiation tuned near frequencies of the 6 2 S 1/2 -7 2 P 1/2, 3/2 transitions. By using the equation for the density matrix, which describes the evolution of a three-level system, the theory of resonance excitation of IR radiation upon one-photon absorption at an adjacent transition is developed. The theory describes well the main features of IR SERS in alkali-metal vapors.

Tunable infrared laser generated via stimulated Raman scattering in Cs vapor

R. T. V. Kung, Irving Itzkan

The conversion of a visible dye laser output into tunable infrared (IR) laser radiation via stimulated Raman scattering in Cs vapor was investigated. Small-signal gain, threshold intensity, and conversion efficiency measurements were obtained versus pump laser detuning. Fixed-frequency IR outputs at other wavelengths were also observed. One of these, the7P_{3/2}-5D_{5/2}transition, had a strong lasing component polarized perpendicular to the pump laser polarization. Lasing near the 8523-Å resonance line was attributed to a four-wave parametric interaction as a plausible generation mechanism.
