Quantum tunneling in a dissipative system

Abstract

Applying a technique developed recently [L. H. Yu and C. P. Sun, Phys. Rev. A 49, 592 (1994); L. H. Yu, Phys. Lett. 202, 167 (1995)] for a harmonic oscillator coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators, we present an exact solution for the tunneling problem in an Ohmic dissipative system with inverted harmonic potential. The result shows that while the dissipation tends to suppress the tunneling, the Brownian motion tends to enhance the tunneling. Whether the tunneling rate increases or not would then depend on the initial conditions. We give a specific formula to calculate the tunneling probability determined by various parameters and the initial conditions. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Trajectory Based Non-Markovian Dissipative Tunneling

Werner Koch, Frank Großmann, David J. Tannor

The influence of a dissipative environment on scattering of a particle by a barrier is investigated by using the recently introduced bohmian mechanics with complex action [J. Chem. Phys. 125, 231103 (2006)]. An extension of this complex trajectory based formalism to include the interaction of the tunneling particle with an environment of harmonic oscillators with a continuous spectral density and at a certain finite temperature allows us to calculate transmission probabilities beyond the weak system bath coupling regime. The results display an increasing tunneling probability for energies below the barrier and a decreased transmission above the barrier due to the coupling. Furthermore, we demonstrate that solutions of a markovian master equation fail to do so in general.

Quantum tunneling in dissipative systems

Edward G. Harris

As a prelude to a discussion of tunneling in the presence of dissipation, we discuss the damped harmonic oscillator. We show that for a harmonic-oscillator potential, the Caldeira-Leggett Hamiltonian can be reduced to a sum of independent harmonic-oscillator Hamiltonians by a normal-mode transformation. We then discuss tunneling through a parabolic barrier and explain the apparently contradictory results in the literature. The decay of a metastable state is then discussed. We argue that much of the published work on tunneling in dissipative systems has assumed unphysical initial conditions. We calculate the tunneling out of a metastable state, on the assumption that the environment is initially at zero temperature, and find that quantum tunneling is enhanced by dissipation.

Exact dynamics of a quantum dissipative system in a constant external field

Chang-Pu Sun, Li-Hua Yu

We study the quantum dynamics of the simplest dissipative system, a particle moving in a constant external field and interacting with a bath of harmonic oscillators with Ohmic spectral density. Applying the main idea and methods developed in our recent work [L. H. Yu and C. P. Sun, Phys. Rev. A 49, 592 (1994)] to this system, we obtain the simple and exact solutions for the coordinate operator of the system in the Heisenberg picture and the wave function of the composite system of the system and the bath in the Schr\"odinger picture. An effective Hamiltonian for the dissipative system is explicitly derived from these solutions. The meaning of the wave function described by this effective Hamiltonian is clarified by analyzing the effect of the Brownian motion. In particular, the general effective Hamiltonian for an arbitrary potential is directly derived with this method for the case when the Brownian motion can be ignored. Using this effective Hamiltonian, we show an interesting result that the dissipation suppresses the wave-packet spreading.

Brownian Motion of the Quantum Dissipation in the RWA

Gao yibo

A microscopic approach treating the quantum dissipation process presented by Sun and Yu (Phys. Rev. A49 (1994) 592; A51 (1995) 1845) is invoked to construct the wavefunction of the composite system—the model for a harmonic oscillator interacting with a many-oscillator bath under the rotating wave approximation. It shows the back-action of the system on the bath. In particular, the dynamic evolution of the wavefunction for the composite system maintains a factorized form in its wavefunction. In the limited temperature, the reduced density matrix for the system is also calculated to clarify the influence of Brownian motion on the system.

Heisenberg’s equations of motion for dissipative tunneling

Mohsen Razavy

The quantum-mechanical problem of tunneling of a particle coupled to a heat bath that consists of a large number of harmonic oscillators is studied in this paper. Here the equation of motion for the particle which is a nonlinear integro-differential equation is found by eliminating the degrees of freedom of the oscillators. The nonlinear operator equation may be solved by noting that the position operator at the time t can be expanded as a power series in terms of the initial position and momentum with time-dependent c-number coefficients. These coefficients also satisfy nonlinear integro-differential equations. For the problem of dissipative tunneling of a particle in a double-well potential, the first few terms of expansion have been calculated numerically. The expansion parameter in this formulation is a small dimensionless parameter which is inversely proportional to the product of the width and the square root of the height of the barrier.

Quantum tunneling in a dissipative environment

M. Hron, Mohsen Razavy

A wave equation formulation of the problem of quantum tunneling in a dissipative medium is developed by considering a many-body system in which the central particle is subject to an arbitrary force law, and at the same time is coupled to a bath of noninteracting harmonic oscillators. For the motion of the central particle it is possible to obtain an effective Lagrangian and Hamiltonian by eliminating the degrees of freedom of the oscillators. However both of these operators are nonlocal, and it is difficult to derive a wave equation for this motion. As an alternative method one can write a many-body Schrödinger equation for the whole system, and then eliminate the wave functions of all of the oscillators. This result is a many-channel Schrödinger equation for the motion of the central particle. By truncating this set of coupled equations, one can solve the problem for different force laws. In particular, in this work, the cases of dissipative tunneling, hopping, and quantum coherence are studied in detail. It is also shown how this approach can be generalized to multidimensional dissipative systems.
