Abstract

Electronically excited iodine atoms [I(*)((2)P(1/2))] are created when ICI is injected into a stream of chemically produced NCl(a(1)Delta). Using an optical double-resonance technique, we observed a population inversion between the 5(2)P(1/2) and 5(2)P(3/2) states of atomic iodine.

Excited iodine atoms I(2P1/2) are created when ICl is injected into a stream of NCl(a1(Delta) ). A population inversion between the I(2P1/2) and I(2P3/2) states of atomic iodine was observed using an optical double-resonance technique.

The direct observation of gain on the 1.315 μm transition of atomic iodine produced by the energy transfer from NCl(a[sup 1]Δ) to I([sup 2]P[sub 3/2])

Gain between the I(2P3/2) and I*(2P1/2) states of atomic iodine at 1.315 μm was detected in a transverse subsonic flow reactor that produced electronically excited I*(2P1/2) atoms from the efficient energy transfer reaction between NCl(a1Δ) metastables and ground state I(2P3/2) atoms. The population inversion was directly observed using a 1.315 μm tunable diode laser that scanned across the entire I(2P3/2)−I*(2P1/2) hyperfine transition with complete resolution.

Chemical generation of a population inversion between the spin-orbit states of atomic iodine

A. T. Pritt, Robert D. Coombe, Donald Pilipovich +3 more

When I2 is injected into a stream of chemically produced O*2(1Δg), electronically excited iodine atoms [I* (52P1/2)] are created. For suitably high O*2/O2 ratios, a population inversion is established between the 52P1/2 and 52P3/2 atomic states of iodine. The inversion was observed using an optical double-resonance technique.

Hydrogen–iodine active medium

A I Didyukov, Yu I Krasnoshchekov, Vadim A Morozov +2 more

An analysis is made of the kinetics of physical processes in a hydrogen-iodine active medium. It is shown that, in principle, it is possible to achieve a population inversion due to the I * ( 2 P 1/2 )–I( 2 P 3/2 ) spin–orbit transition in atomic iodine as a result of near-resonant transfer of hydrogen vibrational energy to I * ( 2 P 1/2 ) ( VE process). A necessary condition for inversion is that at T = 300 K the mixture should contain more than 10% of the vibrationally excited hydrogen H 2 ( ν = 2) relative to the ground-state H 2 ( ν = 0). Some typical features of a hydrogen–iodine system are noted and its potential usefulness is demonstrated.

Population inversions in atomic cesium in the cesium-fluorine reaction system

Lawrence H. Hall

The chemiluminescence of the electronically excited cesium atom in the cesium-fluorine reaction system was analyzed to give relative excited-state populations. Pumping rates into each state have been calculated. The populations measured show 27 population inversions on optically allowed transitions.
