Generation of stimulated radiation in a dye solution on reflection from a nonlinear self-induced mirror

Abstract

A report is made of the formation of a phase reflection grating in a solution of a laser dye induced by the radiation emitted by the dye itself (the grating acts as a nonlinear reflector). The results are given of some investigations of the characteristics of the stimulated emission from a solution of rhodamine 6G in a resonator with an exit mirror in the form of a self-induced phase grating.

Characteristics of stimulated emission from a rhodamine 6G solution under internal reflection conditions

S A Lebedev, V. A. Kizel, Boris Ya. Kogan

Temperature dependences of the direction of emission of superradiance and of the wavelength of stimulated emission were determined for a solution of rhodamine 6G in an internal reflection configuration. The results obtained were in good agreement with calculations. Some energy, spectral, and angular characteristics of the stimulated radiation were determined. It was also found that dye-activated polymer films could be used as the active media.

Modulation of the spectrum of a dye laser by spatial gratings of the refractive index of a substance placed inside the resonator

M. V. Belokon', Terlan Sh. Efendiev, Anatolii N Rubinov

A study was made of the modulation of the coherent emission spectrum by spatial gratings of the refractive index, produced by the dye laser field in an absorbing medium inside the resonator. It was found that the frequencies of the reflection maxima of a nonlinear mirror resulting from the inhomogeneity of the refractive index along the direction of propagation of the light wave were in agreement with the frequencies satisfying the conditions for the maxima of interference reflection in the presence of an additional plane in the resonator.

Relationship between stimulated fluorescence and stimulated resonance Raman scattering of dyes in a resonator

A. Lau, Kurt Lenz, P. P. Kircheva +3 more

An investigation was made of the visibility of stimulated Raman lines under conditions of molecular resonance. A cell containing the medium under study was placed inside a resonator whose parameters were varied by changing the reflection coefficients of the mirrors or altering the length. The observed deterioration in the visibility of the Raman lines when the resonator Q factor was increased and its length was decreased could be explained qualitatively by a decrease in the nonlinear transmission of the dye for the pump radiation.

We present what to our knowledge is the first demonstration of self-pumped phase conjugation in a laser-pumped solid-state Rhodamine-6G dye saturable amplifier. Phase-conjugate energy reflectivity of as much as 2100% at 557 nm has been obtained.

Reflections From A Dynamic Grating In A Dye Solution

Marc D. Davidson, Hugo J. van Staveren, C. Snoek +1 more

In addition to results of earlier experiments where Bragg scattering from a distributed feedback dye laser is observed, in the experiment described here the occurrence of a phase conjugated reflected beam is demonstrated. It is shown that a distributed feedback laser can be used as a frequency selective reflector for a seperate dye laser. Some time ago Golub and Shuker investigated the feasibility of optical switching by Bragg scattering of a light beam from a spatially modulated gain grating. This grating formed the basis of a distributed feedback dye laser (DFDL) and the reflection was only visible if the DFDL was pumped above threshold. In that case reflectivities of more than 100% for small input signals could be obtained. Golub and Shuker emphasized that in their experiment phase conjugation could not occur. Their main argument was, that the probe beam and the pump beams had completely different origins. Consequently these beams had no constant phase relation, and hence degenerated four-wave mixing leading to phase conjugation was excluded.

Amplified phase conjugate reflection of KrF laser radiation

R. G., M. C. Gower

We report amplified phase conjugate reflection of KrF laser radiation at 249 nm using degenerate four-wave mixing in a solution of rhodamine 6G in ethanol. Reflectivities of ∼300% have been measured. Saturation of the reflectivity at high probe intensities was observed and the temporal dependence of the reflectivity has been investigated. The importance of mutual coherence of the probe and pump for the thermally induced nonlinearity involved in the process has been demonstrated.
