Quantum Signatures of Chaos in Adiabatic Interaction Between a Trapped Ion and a Laser Standing Wave

Abstract

We study quantum motion around a classical heteroclinic point of a single trapped ion interacting with a strong laser standing wave. We construct a set of exact coherent states of the quantum system and from the exact solutions reveal that quantum signatures of chaos can be induced by the adiabatic interaction between the trapped ion and the laser standing wave, where the quantum expectation values of position and momentum correspond to the classically chaotic orbit. The chaotic region on the phase space is illustrated. The energy crossing and quantum resonance in time evolution and the exponentially increased Heisenberg uncertainty are found. The results suggest a theoretical scheme for controlling the unstable regular and chaotic motions.

Quantum Dynamics of a Single Trapped Ion Interacting with Standing Laser Pulses

Li Fei, Hai Wen-Hua, Chong Gui-Shu +1 more

A classically chaotic system consisting of a Paul trapped ion and a sequences of standing laser pulses is treated quantum-mechanically. Under the circumstance of time-dependence, we derive the transition probability from the ion's motional state to ', and find, in the first-order approximation, the classically chaotic character disappears. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculations show that by regulating the phase parameter we can control the transition probability. When reaches some specific values, the transition from the state to ' is forbidden and, for some laser periods, resonance occurs, which leads to the corresponding transitions between different motional states. The time-evolution of an initial motional state just over one period is also studied in detail.

Quantum signatures of chaos in the dynamics of a trapped ion

J. K. Breslin, Catherine A. Holmes, Gerard J Milburn

We show how a nonlinear chaotic system, the parametrically kicked nonlinear oscillator, may be realized in the dynamics of a trapped, laser-cooled ion, interacting with a sequence of standing-wave pulses. Unlike the original optical scheme [G. J. Milburn and C. A. Holmes, Phys. Rev. A 44, 4704 (1991)], the trapped ion enables strongly quantum dynamics with minimal dissipation. This should permit an experimental test of one of the quantum signatures of chaos: irregular collapse and revival dynamics of the average vibrational energy.

Quantum chaos of an ion trapped in a linear ion trap

G. P. Berman, Daniel F. V. James, D. I. Kamenev

We describe the transition to quantum chaos of an ion trapped in a linear ion trap and interacting with two laser fields. Under the conditions of adiabatic illumination of the upper level of the ion, and when the frequencies of the two laser beams are slightly different, the system is reduced to a quantum linear oscillator interacting with a monochromatic wave. The property of localization over the quantum resonance cells is proposed to exploit in order to facilitate the process of measurement of the probability distribution of an ion on the vibrational levels. In the regime of strong chaos the time-averaged values of the energy and dispersion of energy are computed and compared with the corresponding classical quantities for different values of the perturbation amplitude. In the exact resonance case, the classical analog of the system possesses an infinite inhomogeneous stochastic web. We analyze the quantum dynamics inside the inhomogeneous web. It is shown that the quantum system mimics on average the dynamics of the corresponding classical system. Formation of the quantum resonance cells is illustrated in the case of a finite detuning from the exact resonance, and under increasing of the wave amplitude. The parameters of the model and the initial conditions are close to the real physical situation which can be realized in the system of cold trapped ion perturbed by two lasers fields with close frequencies. Quantum–classical correspondence in chaotic dynamics of laser-driven atoms

Sergei V Prants

Abstract This paper is a review article on some aspects of quantum–classical correspondence in chaotic dynamics of cold atoms interacting with a standing-wave laser field forming an optical lattice. The problem is treated from both (semi)classical and quantum points of view. In both approaches, the interaction of an atomic electic dipole with the laser field is treated quantum mechanically. Translational motion is described, at first, classically (atoms are considered to be point-like objects) and then quantum mechanically as a propagation of matter waves. Semiclassical equations of motion are shown to be chaotic in the sense of classical dynamical chaos. Point-like atoms in an absolutely deterministic and rigid optical lattice can move in a random-like manner demonstrating a chaotic walking with typical features of classical chaos. This behavior is explained by random-like ‘jumps’ of one of the atomic internal variable when atoms cross nodes of the standing wave and occurs in a specific range of the atom-field detuning. When treating atoms as matter waves, we show that they can make nonadiabatic transitions when crossing the standing-wave nodes. The point is that atomic wave packets split at each node in the same range of the atom-field detuning where the classical chaos occurs. The key point is that the squared amplitude of those semiclassical ‘jumps’ equal to the quantum Landau–Zener parameter which defines the probability of nonadiabatic transitions at the nodes. Nonadiabatic atomic wave packets are much more complicated compared to adiabatic ones and may be called chaotic in this sense. A few possible experiments to observe some manifestations of classical and quantum chaos with cold atoms in horizontal and vertical optical lattices are proposed and discussed.

Super-revivals, chaos, and entanglement of a trapped ion in a standing wave

Mao-Fa Fang, S. Swain, Peng Zhou

We unitarily transform the Hamiltonian of a trapped ion, situated at any position of a standing-wave laser field, to that for the normal Jaynes-Cummings model in the bare ionic basis, and we obtain the general evolution operator of the trapped ion system. We show the existence of super-revivals of the ionic inversion if the trapped ion is not located at a node of the standing wave, and we examine the degree of entanglement between the vibrational phonons and the trapped ion. For some parameter values, we find chaotic behavior.
