Quantum signatures of chaos in the dynamics of a trapped ion

Abstract

We show how a nonlinear chaotic system, the parametrically kicked nonlinear oscillator, may be realized in the dynamics of a trapped, laser-cooled ion, interacting with a sequence of standing-wave pulses. Unlike the original optical scheme [G. J. Milburn and C. A. Holmes, Phys. Rev. A 44, 4704 (1991)], the trapped ion enables strongly quantum dynamics with minimal dissipation. This should permit an experimental test of one of the quantum signatures of chaos: irregular collapse and revival dynamics of the average vibrational energy.

Quantum Signatures of Chaos in Adiabatic Interaction Between a Trapped Ion and a Laser Standing Wave

Hui Li, Hai Wen-Hua, Xu Jun

We study quantum motion around a classical heteroclinic point of a single trapped ion interacting with a strong laser standing wave. We construct a set of exact coherent states of the quantum system and from the exact solutions reveal that quantum signatures of chaos can be induced by the adiabatic interaction between the trapped ion and the laser standing wave, where the quantum expectation values of position and momentum correspond to the classically chaotic orbit. The chaotic region on the phase space is illustrated. The energy crossing and quantum resonance in time evolution and the exponentially increased Heisenberg uncertainty are found. The results suggest a theoretical scheme for controlling the unstable regular and chaotic motions.

Coherence and chaos in a quantum optical system

Gerard J Milburn

A nonlinear, kicked quantum optical system, which classically exhibits regions of regular and chaotic motion, is proposed as a possible experimental test of quantum chaos. The mean photon number is shown to undergo regular collapse and revival in the regular region of phase space and irregular revivals in the chaotic region.

Super-revivals, chaos, and entanglement of a trapped ion in a standing wave

Mao-Fa Fang, S. Swain, Peng Zhou

We unitarily transform the Hamiltonian of a trapped ion, situated at any position of a standing-wave laser field, to that for the normal Jaynes-Cummings model in the bare ionic basis, and we obtain the general evolution operator of the trapped ion system. We show the existence of super-revivals of the ionic inversion if the trapped ion is not located at a node of the standing wave, and we examine the degree of entanglement between the vibrational phonons and the trapped ion. For some parameter values, we find chaotic behavior.

Quantum coherence and classical chaos in a pulsed parametric oscillator with a Kerr nonlinearity

Gerard J Milburn, Catherine A. Holmes

We consider a parametric amplifier driven by a periodically pulsed pump field inside a cavity containing a Kerr nonlinearity. The dynamics of the device is modeled as a kicked nonlinear system. The pulsed parametric amplifier constitutes the kick. In between kicks the dynamics is determined by the Kerr nonlinearity and damping. In the absence of damping, a classical description of the device exhibits a rich phase-space structure including fixed points of multiple period and chaos. We contrast the classical behavior of the mean intensity with that predicted by quantum dynamics. The mean photon number inside the cavity is shown to undergo regular collapse and revival in the regular region of the phase space and irregular revivals in the chaotic region. When damping is included, the quantum recurrences are rapidly suppressed, and the classical behavior is restored. In this case a stable steady state is possible. The damping represents the effect of photon-number measurements on the system. We also discuss the photon statistics in the steady state.

Quantum chaos of an ion trapped in a linear ion trap

G. P. Berman, Daniel F. V. James, D. I. Kamenev

We describe the transition to quantum chaos of an ion trapped in a linear ion trap and interacting with two laser fields. Under the conditions of adiabatic illumination of the upper level of the ion, and when the frequencies of the two laser beams are slightly different, the system is reduced to a quantum linear oscillator interacting with a monochromatic wave. The property of localization over the quantum resonance cells is proposed to exploit in order to facilitate the process of measurement of the probability distribution of an ion on the vibrational levels. In the regime of strong chaos the time-averaged values of the energy and dispersion of energy are computed and compared with the corresponding classical quantities for different values of the perturbation amplitude. In the exact resonance case, the classical analog of the system possesses an infinite inhomogeneous stochastic web. We analyze the quantum dynamics inside the inhomogeneous web. It is shown that the quantum system mimics on average the dynamics of the corresponding classical system. Formation of the quantum resonance cells is illustrated in the case of a finite detuning from the exact resonance, and under increasing of the wave amplitude. The parameters of the model and the initial conditions are close to the real physical situation which can be realized in the system of cold trapped ion perturbed by two lasers fields with close frequencies. Dynamical stability and quantum chaos of ions in a linear trap

G. P. Berman, Daniel F. V. James, Richard Hughes +3 more

The realization of a paradigm chaotic system, namely, the harmonically driven oscillator, in the quantum domain using cold trapped ions driven by lasers is theoretically investigated. The simplest characteristics of regular and chaotic dynamics are calculated. The possibilities of experimental realization are discussed.
