Spectral property of two-photon flux generated by four-photon scattering in photonic-crystal fibers

Abstract

Based on the scalar four-photon scattering process, the quantum state of a lightwave at the output of fiber is derived by solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a perturbation theory. The joint spectral function of two photons is achieved from the derived quantum state. The dispersion operator involves the third-order dispersion term in the case that the pump wavelength is close to the zero dispersion wavelength. Simulation results show the first-order approximation of our joint spectral function is in excellent agreement with the complicated exact solution. By analyzing the spectral property of the two-photon flux generated by four-photon scattering in photonic-crystal fibers, it is found that the sign of dispersion has very little influence on the spectrum except the slight modulation instability in the anomalous dispersion domain.

Four-photon scattering in birefringent fibers

Edouard Brainis

Four-photon scattering in nonlinear waveguides is an important physical process that allows photon-pair generation in well-defined guided modes, with high rate and reasonably low noise. Most of the experiments to date used the scalar four-photon scattering process in which the pump photons and the scattered photons have the same polarization. In birefringent waveguides, vectorial four-photon scatterings are also allowed: these vectorial scattering processes involve photons with different polarizations. In this paper, the theory of four-photon scattering in nonlinear, birefringent, and dispersive fibers is developed in the framework of the quantum theory of light. The work focuses on the spectral properties and quantum correlations (including entanglement) of photon pairs generated in high-birefringence and low-birefringence fibers.

Spectral study of photon pairs generated in dispersion shifted fiber with a pulsed pump

Xiaoying Li, Xiaoxin Ma, Zhe Yu Ou +3 more

Spectral correlation of photon pairs generated in dispersion shifted fiber by a pulsed pump is theoretically analyzed and experimentally investigated. We first calculate the spectral function of photon pairs according to the deduced two-photon state generated by spontaneous four wave mixing under the assumptions close to the real experimental conditions. We then experimentally study the spectral property of the signal and idler photon pairs generated in optical fiber by photon correlation measurements, and the experimental results agree with the calculation. The investigation is useful for developing fiber-based sources of entangled photon pairs and for studying multi-photon quantum interference with multiple photon pairs.

Quantum theory for two-photon-state generation by means of four-wave mixing in optical fiber

Jun Chen, Xiaoying Li, Prem Kumar

We present a quantum theory for generating two-photon states by means of four-wave mixing in optical fiber. We start with an interaction Hamiltonian that can correctly describe all nonlinear interactions among the four waves present in the fiber, namely, the frequency non-degenerate pumps, signal, and idler, including the terms responsible for self-phase modulation (SPM), cross-phase modulation (XPM), and four-photon scattering (FPS). The exact form of this Hamiltonian is obtained through comparison between the classical and quantum equations of motion. The two-photon state is then calculated by means of first-order perturbation theory. It turns out that only the FPM and the pump SPM terms contribute to the formation of the two-photon state. The entangled nature of this state is verified in a coincidence counting experiment. The results of the theoretical calculation agree well with experimental data.

Spectral properties of photon pairs generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing in inhomogeneous photonic crystal fibers

Liang Cui, Xiaoying Li, Ningbo Zhao

The photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is one of the excellent media for generating photon pairs via spontaneous four-wave mixing. Here we study how the inhomogeneity of PCFs affect the spectral properties of photon pairs from both the theoretical and experimental aspects. The theoretical model shows that the photon pairs born in different places of the inhomogeneous PCF are coherently superposed, and a modulation in the broadened spectrum of phase-matching function will appear, which prevents the realization of spectral factorable photon pairs. In particular, the inhomogeneity induced modulation can be examined by measuring the spectrum of the individual signal or idler field when the asymmetric group-velocity matching condition is approximately fulfilled. Our experiments are performed by tailoring the spectrum of pulsed pump to satisfy the specified phase-matching condition. The observed spectra of individual signal photons, which are produced from different segments of the 1.9 m inhomogeneous PCF, agree with the theoretical predictions. The investigations are not only useful for fiber-based quantum state engineering, but also provide a dependable method to test the homogeneity of PCF.

Generation of spectrally uncorrelated biphotons via fiber nonlinear quantum interference

Zhengtong Wei, Chuan Qu, Tian’an Wu +3 more

Spectrally uncorrelated biphotons are the essential resources for achieving various quantum information processing protocols. We theoretically investigate the generation of spectrally uncorrelated biphotons emitted by spontaneous four-wave mixing from a fiber nonlinear interferometer which consists of an N-stage nonlinear gain fiber and an (N-1)-stage dispersion modulation fiber. The output biphoton states of nonlinear interference are the coherent superposition of various biphoton states born in each nonlinear fiber, and thus the interference fringe will reshape the biphoton joint spectra. As a result, resorting to Taylor expansion to first order for phase mismatching, we theoretically verify that the orientation of phase matching contours will rotate in a specific way with only varying the length of dispersion modulation fiber. The rotation in orientation of phase matching contours may result in spectrally uncorrelated biphotons and even arbitrary correlation biphotons. Further, we choose micro/nanofiber as the nonlinear gain fiber and single-mode communication fiber as dispersion modulation fiber to numerically simulate the generation of spectrally uncorrelated biphotons from spontaneous fourwave mixing. Here, due to significant frequency detuning (hundreds of THz), Raman background noise can be considerably suppressed, even at room temperature, and photons with largely tunable wavelengths can be achieved, indicating a practicability in many quantum fields. A photon mode purity of 97.2% will be theoretically attained without weakening the heralding nature of biphoton sources. We think that this fiber nonlinear interference with the flexibly engineered quantum state can be an excellent practical source for quantum information processing.

Quantum treatment of field propagation in a fiber near the zero dispersion wavelength

Abolfazl Safaei Bezgabadi, Angelo Bassi, M. A. Bolorizadeh

Abstract In this report, we present a quantum theory describing the propagation of the electromagnetic radiation in a fiber in the presence of the third order dispersion coefficient. We obtained the quantum photon-polariton field, hence, we provide herein a coupled set of operator forms for the corresponding nonlinear Schrödinger equations when the third order dispersion coefficient is included. Coupled stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equations were obtained by applying a positive P-representation that governs the propagation and interaction of quantum solitons in the presence of the third-order dispersion term. Finally, to reduce the fluctuations near solitons in the first approximation, we developed coupled stochastic linear equations.
