Abstract

Abstract In this report, we present a quantum theory describing the propagation of the electromagnetic radiation in a fiber in the presence of the third order dispersion coefficient. We obtained the quantum photon-polariton field, hence, we provide herein a coupled set of operator forms for the corresponding nonlinear Schrödinger equations when the third order dispersion coefficient is included. Coupled stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equations were obtained by applying a positive P-representation that governs the propagation and interaction of quantum solitons in the presence of the third-order dispersion term. Finally, to reduce the fluctuations near solitons in the first approximation, we developed coupled stochastic linear equations.

A Quantum Theory for Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves through Lossy Dielectrics in Presence of Third Order Dispersion

Abolfazl Safaei Bezgabadi, M. A. Bolorizadeh

In this paper, we present a quantum theory for field propagation through a three dimensional dielectric when the third order dispersion and the attenuation coefficients are included. A unique Lagrangian is defined leading to the correct equation of motion and the classical Hamiltonian. It is assumed that the dielectric has a combination of inhomogeneity, dispersion and nonlinearity. By employing constraint quantization approach the final Hamiltonian is expanded in terms of properly defined annihilation and creation operators. We obtain the quantum fields (quantum photon-polaritons fields) for propagation through the dielectric in the presence of the third order dispersion and the attenuation coefficients by using these annihilation and creation operators. The number operator in the final Hamiltonian indicates the number of photon-polaritons in the medium. The nonlinear part of the Hamiltonian could be derived by defining displacement field operator in terms of annihilation and creation operators. As a simple example, the present quantum theory is applied to field propagation through a one dimensional slab.

Quantum theory of nonlinear fiber optics: Phase-space representations

S. J. Carter

In this paper the equations for quantum optical pulse propagation in nonlinear and dispersive single-mode fibers are presented in terms of two phase-space formulations based on the positive-P and the Wigner distributions. Included are the effects due to the coupling of the electromagnetic modes to the vibrational states of a vitreous silica fiber. By making use of the well-known equivalence of Fokker-Planck and Ito stochastic equations, we demonstrate two alternative methods for formulating the equations of motion as coupled stochastic c-number equations for the propagating field. The first method involves a representation of the density operator in terms of the positive P distribution function. This leads to exact stochastic equations of motion. The second method makes use of the Wigner distribution function. This method, which requires truncation of third-order derivative terms in the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation, is necessarily approximate. However, we discuss certain advantages to the Wigner approach that have made it the preferable method for exploratory work.

Squeezing of quantum solitons

S. J. Carter, P. D. Drummond, M. D. Reid +1 more

We develop a quantum theory of propagation in dispersive nonlinear media. Quantum fluctuations are handled via the coherent-state positive-P representation. A stochastic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in the field variables is obtained which predicts wide band squeezing in the region of anomalous dispersion. For soliton inputs, fluctuations are reduced over the soliton bandwidth. This leads to quantum solitons which have quadrature fluctuations less than the level of vacuum fluctuations.

Quantum noise in optical fibers I Stochastic equations

P. D. Drummond, Joel Frederick Corney

We analyze the quantum dynamics of radiation propagating in a single-mode optical fiber with dispersion, nonlinearity, and Raman coupling to thermal phonons. We start from a fundamental Hamiltonian that includes the principal known nonlinear effects and quantum-noise sources, including linear gain and loss. Both Markovian and frequency-dependent, non-Markovian reservoirs are treated. This treatment allows quantum Langevin equations, which have a classical form except for additional quantum-noise terms, to be calculated. In practical calculations, it is more useful to transform to Wigner or +P quasi-probability operator representations. These transformations result in stochastic equations that can be analyzed by use of perturbation theory or exact numerical techniques. The results have applications to fiber-optics communications, networking, and sensor technology.

Quantum and thermal noise of solitons in optical fibers

P. D. Drummond, S. J. Carter

We develop a quantum theory of propagation in dispersive nonlinear media via a quantized field theory and a coherent state expansion. The resulting stochastic nonlinear Schrodinger equation includes both quantum fluctuations and thermal noise due to refractive-index fluctuations in the medium. The theory can describe either cw propagation with dispersion or soliton propagation. In the cw case, enhanced squeezing occurs with anomalous dispersion. This is reduced by thermal noise, just as it is in the normal dispersion case. The noise-induced reduction in squeezing is more severe with normal dispersion owing to the intrinsic lack of phase matching in the normal dispersion regime. With anomalous dispersion, the cancellation of nonlinear by linear dispersion allows squeezing to occur over a wide bandwidth even in the presence of thermal fluctuations. Our theory is also able to treat soliton propagation in the anomalous dispersion case. A substantial degree of pulsed squeezing is obtained, and we point out that an optimal detection scheme requires a pulsed local oscillator. Results for the effects of thermal noise on soliton propagation are presented, in which case improvement is obtained by reducing the soliton time duration.
