Abstract

We develop a quantum theory of propagation in dispersive nonlinear media. Quantum fluctuations are handled via the coherent-state positive-P representation. A stochastic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in the field variables is obtained which predicts wide band squeezing in the region of anomalous dispersion. For soliton inputs, fluctuations are reduced over the soliton bandwidth. This leads to quantum solitons which have quadrature fluctuations less than the level of vacuum fluctuations.

Quantum-field theory of squeezing in solitons

P. D. Drummond, S. J. Carter

We develop a quantum theory of propagation in dispersive nonlinear media from the foundations of a correctly quantized field theory. Quantum fluctuations are handled by coherent-state expansions of localized field states. A stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the field variables is obtained for media with an intensity-dependent refractive index. This predicts squeezing for a continuous-wave input, over a wide bandwidth with anomalous dispersion, and over a gradually reducing bandwidth with normal dispersion. The equation is easily modified to include thermal-noise sources as well. For solitons, fluctuations are reduced over the soliton bandwidth. This leads to quantum solitons that have quadrature fluctuations less than the level of vacuum fluctuations. The complementary quadrature has a correspondingly increased fluctuation level.

Quantum and thermal noise of solitons in optical fibers

P. D. Drummond, S. J. Carter

We develop a quantum theory of propagation in dispersive nonlinear media via a quantized field theory and a coherent state expansion. The resulting stochastic nonlinear Schrodinger equation includes both quantum fluctuations and thermal noise due to refractive-index fluctuations in the medium. The theory can describe either cw propagation with dispersion or soliton propagation. In the cw case, enhanced squeezing occurs with anomalous dispersion. This is reduced by thermal noise, just as it is in the normal dispersion case. The noise-induced reduction in squeezing is more severe with normal dispersion owing to the intrinsic lack of phase matching in the normal dispersion regime. With anomalous dispersion, the cancellation of nonlinear by linear dispersion allows squeezing to occur over a wide bandwidth even in the presence of thermal fluctuations. Our theory is also able to treat soliton propagation in the anomalous dispersion case. A substantial degree of pulsed squeezing is obtained, and we point out that an optimal detection scheme requires a pulsed local oscillator. Results for the effects of thermal noise on soliton propagation are presented, in which case improvement is obtained by reducing the soliton time duration.

Quantum fluctuations of optical solitons in fibers

Demin Yao

Quantum fluctuations of optical solitons in fibers are discussed on the basis of the exact quantum states in the frame of the quantum nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. Position and momentum fluctuations as well as quadrature phase fluctuations are calculated, and explicit results are expressed in terms of the intrinsic quantum parameters. Soliton wave-packet spreading and phase-diffusion phenomena are clearly demonstrated, and the corresponding squeezing effects are analyzed. In particular, soliton amplitude squeezing is investigated in an experimental setup of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer containing an optical fiber. Coherent states for quantum solitons are discussed with attention given to their dynamical preservability. Compared with previous linearized approaches, the present study may provide a more fundamental treatment to quantum fluctuations of solitons.

Numerical Simulations on Quantum Noise Squeezing for Soliton-like Pulses in Optical Fiber

Arseny A. Sorokin, Nikolay I. Salnikov, Anna N. Kosareva +2 more

Generation of light with nonclassical properties, such as squeezed light, has gathered a lot of attention because of possible uses in such areas as quantum state engineering, quantum imaging, continuous variable quantum computing, and detection of gravitational waves. Squeezed light is generally produced by transporting light through a nonlinear medium. One such media is Kerr-nonlinear optical fibres. We aim to find the parameters for a fibre polarization squeezing setup by studying the dependencies of quantum noise suppression on the duration of the pulse and the input power. This is performed by modeling the light field propagation using the split-step Fourier method to numerically solve the stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation obtained by using the Wigner representation. This equation includes such physical effects as damping, quantum loss noise, dispersion, Kerr and Raman nonlinearities, and stochastic Raman noise.

Quantum noise and thermal noise in optical soliton propagation

Robert M. Shelby, E. H. Whittaker, P. D. Drummond +2 more

Classical optical solitons propagate in optical fibers without temporal or spectral distortion as a result of a balance between phase shifts due to group velocity dispersion and those due to nonlinear self-phase modulation. This balance is achieved by the proper choice of pulse shape and duration for a given pulse energy. The quantum fluctuations associated with a coherent soliton do not undergo stationary propagation, however, and a number of effects are predicted, including the evolution of vacuum noise associated with the input coherent pulse into squeezed fluctuations and the temporal spreading of the soliton pulse because of dispersion acting on quantum fluctuations of the pulse frequency.

Quantum theory of bragg solitons: a linearized approach

Ray‐Kuang Lee, Yinchieh Lai

The fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with Kerr nonlinearity exhibit optical soliton like phenomena known as the Bragg solitons. Due to the high dispersion of FBGs near the band edge, optical solitons in the anomalous dispersion side is produced when the input pulse has suitable pulse-width and peak intensity. The Bragg solitons belong to the class of bi-directional pulse propagation problems. In this paper, general quantum theory for bi-directional pulse propagation problems is developed and applied to the Bragg solitons. The output Bragg soliton pulses are quantum-mechanically squeezed and their squeezing ratios calculated.
