Solitons and Fractional Spectral Dimensionality in the Dilute S=12 Anisotropic XY Chain

Abstract

The thermodynamic properties of a soliton-bearing system without translation invariance---the dilute $S=\frac{1}{2}$ anisotropic $\mathrm{XY}$ chain---are calculated. At low temperatures the dominant contribution comes from a low-energy complex mode, which assumes zero energy when translational symmetry is restored in the pure system. The density of states of the complex modes is found to exhibit a scaling property with a fractional spectral dimensionality $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{d}=\frac{2\mathrm{ln}c}{\mathrm{ln}\ensuremath{\lambda}}$, with $c$ the concentration of magnetic sites and $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ related to the anisotropy. Consequently, the specific heat shows the anomalous behavior $C(T)\ensuremath{\propto}{T}^{\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{d}}$.

Anomaly in the density of states for the diluteS= 1/2 anisotropic XY chain

M. G. Pini, A. Rettori

We calculate the low temperature thermodynamic properties of the dilute S = 1/2 anisotropic XY chain. The introduction of disorder implies an anomalous density of states like n ( E ) ∼ E -1 at very low energies, where = 2 ln c /ln λ with c the concentration of magnetic sites and λ related to the anisotropy.

Regularly alternating spin- 12 anisotropic XY chains: The ground-state and thermodynamic properties

Oleg Derzhko, Johannes Richter, Taras Krokhmalskii +1 more

Using the Jordan-Wigner transformation and continued fractions we calculate rigorously the thermodynamic quantities for the spin-1/2 transverse Ising chain with periodically varying intersite interactions and/or on-site fields. We consider in detail the properties of the chains having a period of the transverse field modulation equal to 3. The regularly alternating transverse Ising chain exhibits several quantum phase transition points, where the number of transition points for a given period of alternation strongly depends on the specific set of the Hamiltonian parameters. The critical behavior in most cases is the same as for the uniform chain. However, for certain sets of the Hamiltonian parameters the critical behavior may be changed and weak singularities in the ground-state quantities appear. Due to the regular alternation of the Hamiltonian parameters the transverse Ising chain may exhibit plateaulike steps in the zero-temperature dependence of the transverse magnetization vs transverse field and many-peak temperature profiles of the specific heat. We compare the ground-state properties of regularly alternating transverse Ising and transverse XX chains and of regularly alternating quantum and classical chains. Making use of the corresponding unitary transformations we extend the elaborated approach to the study of thermodynamics of regularly alternating spin-1/2 anisotropic XY chains without field. We use the exact expression for the ground-state energy of such a chain of period 2 to discuss how the exchange interaction anisotropy destroys the spin-Peierls dimerized phase.

Solitons in one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains

Antonio S. T. Pires, Sérgio Luiz Talim, B. V. Costa

We study the quantum-statistical mechanics, at low temperatures, of a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with two anisotropies. In the weak-coupling limit we determine the temperature dependences of the soliton energy and the soliton density. We have found that the leading correction to the sine-Gordon (SG) expression for the soliton density and the quantum soliton energy comes from the out-of-plane magnon mode, not present in the pure SG model. We also show that when an external magnetic field is applied, the chain supports a new type of kink, where the sublattices rotate in opposite directions.

Singular thermodynamic properties in random magnetic chains

J. E. Hirsch, Jorge V. José

The nearest-neighbor random-exchange Heisenberg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain ($s=\frac{1}{2}$) is studied at low temperatures via an approximate renormalization-group method. This entails renormalization of the random-exchange coupling constant $J$ and of the probability law for $J$. ${P}_{0}(J)$. After $n$ iterations we find that the renormalized probability function ${P}_{n}({J}^{(n)})$, a function of the renormalized coupling ${J}^{(n)}$, develops singular behavior for small ${J}^{(n)}$, independent of the initial form of ${P}_{0}(J)$. This happens both for ${P}_{0}(J)$ that diverge or go to zero as $J\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$. The singular form of ${P}_{n}({J}^{(n)})$ is such that it leads to a specific heat and susceptibility that behave like $C\ensuremath{\sim}{T}^{1\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{C}(T)}$ and $\ensuremath{\chi}\ensuremath{\sim}{T}^{\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}(T)}$. ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{C}(T)$ and ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}(T)$ are exponents weakly dependent on temperature ($T$) that go to one as $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ and satisfy ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}(T)>{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{C}(T)$, for arbitrary initial probability laws. The classical $n$-vector models, and in particular the classical Heisenberg model are also studied using a renormalization-group approach and it is found that their behavior is different than that of the quantum model: singular behavior in the thermodynamic properties is only obtained if the starting ${P}_{0}(J)$ is singular. An explanation of these results in terms of the scaling theory of localization is suggested. The relevance of our results to the experimental findings on the magnetic properties of tetracyanoquinodimethanide complexes is also discussed.

Linear Magnetic Chains with Anisotropic Coupling

Jill C. Bonner, Michael Ellis Fisher

Linear chains (and rings) of $S=\frac{1}{2}$ spins with the anisotropic (Ising-Heisenberg) Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}=\ensuremath{-}2J\ensuremath{\Sigma}\stackrel{N}{i=1}{{{S}_{i}}^{z}{{S}_{i+1}}^{z}+\ensuremath{\gamma}({{S}_{i}}^{x}{{S}_{i+1}}^{x}+{{S}_{i}}^{y}{{S}_{i+1}}^{y})}\ensuremath{-}g\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\Sigma}\stackrel{N}{i=1}\mathrm{H}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{\mathrm{S}}_{i}$ have been studied by exact machine calculations for $N=2 \mathrm{to} 11$, $\ensuremath{\gamma}=0 \mathrm{to} 1$ and for ferro- and antiferro-magnetic coupling. The results reveal the dependence on finite size and anisotropy of the spectrum and dispersion laws, of the energy, entropy, and specific heat, of the magnetization and susceptibilities, and of the pair correlations. The limiting $N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ behavior is accurately indicated, for all $\ensuremath{\gamma}$, in the region $\frac{\mathrm{kT}}{|J|}>~0.5$ which includes the maxima in the specific heat and susceptibility. The behavior of thermal and magnetic properties of infinite chains at lower temperatures is estimated by extrapolation. For infinite antiferromagnetic chains the ground-state degeneracy, the anisotropy gap, and the magnetization, perpendicular susceptibility, and pair correlations at $T=0$ are similarly studied. Estimates of the long-range order suggest that it vanishes only at the Heisenberg limit $\ensuremath{\gamma}=1$ and confirm the accuracy of Walker's perturbation series in $\ensuremath{\gamma}$.
