Anomaly in the density of states for the diluteS= 1/2 anisotropic XY chain

Abstract

We calculate the low temperature thermodynamic properties of the dilute S = 1/2 anisotropic XY chain. The introduction of disorder implies an anomalous density of states like n ( E ) ∼ E -1 at very low energies, where = 2 ln c /ln λ with c the concentration of magnetic sites and λ related to the anisotropy.

Solitons and Fractional Spectral Dimensionality in the Dilute S=12 Anisotropic XY Chain

M. Macciò, A. Rettori, M. G. Pini

The thermodynamic properties of a soliton-bearing system without translation invariance---the dilute $S=\frac{1}{2}$ anisotropic $\mathrm{XY}$ chain---are calculated. At low temperatures the dominant contribution comes from a low-energy complex mode, which assumes zero energy when translational symmetry is restored in the pure system. The density of states of the complex modes is found to exhibit a scaling property with a fractional spectral dimensionality $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{d}=\frac{2\mathrm{ln}c}{\mathrm{ln}\ensuremath{\lambda}}$, with $c$ the concentration of magnetic sites and $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ related to the anisotropy. Consequently, the specific heat shows the anomalous behavior $C(T)\ensuremath{\propto}{T}^{\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{d}}$.

Effect of a magnetic field on the thermodynamics of diluteXYquantum chains

M. Macciò, A. Rettori, M. G. Pini

We investigate the effect of a magnetic field along the z\ensuremath{\rightarrow} direction on the magnetization, longitudinal susceptibility, and specific heat of the dilute XY quantum chain. The introduction of the field emphasizes the effect of the strong discretization of the modes giving rise to anomalies in the field dependence of the thermodynamic properties which should be experimentally observable at low temperatures.

Critical properties and phase diagram of the quantum anisotropic XY spin chain in a random magnetic field: A density-matrix renormalization-group analysis

Aušrius Juozapavičius, Laura Urba, S. Caprara +1 more

The spin-1/2 quantum anisotropic XY spin chain in a transverse random magnetic field parallel to the z axis is numerically studied by means of the density-matrix renormalization group. The dependence of the spontaneous magnetization and the energy gap on both the strength of the random magnetic field and the factor of anisotropy is determined. The critical line for the order-disorder phase transition is obtained and the resulting phase diagram is drawn. Our results are compatible with the fact that models with different factors of anisotropy fall within the same universality class as the quantum Ising model in a transverse random field.

Phase transitions in the anisotropic XY ferromagnet with quenched nonmagnetic impurity

Olivia Mallick, Muktish Acharyya

The equilibrium behaviors of the anisotropic XY ferromagnet, with nonmagnetic impurity, have been investigated in three dimensions by Monte Carlo simulation using Metropolis algorithm. Two different types of anisotropy, namely, the bilinear exchange type and single-site anisotropy are considered here. The thermodynamic behaviors of the components of the magnetizations (M), susceptibility ([Formula: see text]) and the specific heat (C) have been studied systematically through extensive Monte Carlo simulations. The ferro–para phase transition has been observed to take place at a lower temperature for impure anisotropic XY ferromagnet. The pseudocritical temperature ([Formula: see text]) has been found to decrease as the system gets more and more impure (impurity concentration p increases). In the case of bilinear exchange type of anisotropy ([Formula: see text]), the pseudocritical temperature ([Formula: see text]) increases linearly with [Formula: see text] for any given concentration of nonmagnetic impurity (p). The slope of this linear function has been found to depend on the impurity concentration (p). The slope decreases linearly with the impurity concentration (p). In the case of the single-site anisotropy (D), the pseudocritical temperature ([Formula: see text]) has been found to decrease linearly with p for fixed D. The critical temperature (for a fixed set of parameter values) has been estimated from the temperature variation of fourth-order Binder cumulants ([Formula: see text]) for different system sizes (L). The critical magnetization ([Formula: see text]) and the maximum value of the susceptibility ([Formula: see text]) are calculated for different system sizes (L). The critical exponents for the assumed scaling laws, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], are estimated through the finite size analysis. We have estimated, [Formula: see text], equals [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] for bilinear exchange and single-site anisotropy, respectively. We have also estimated, [Formula: see text] equals [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] for bilinear exchange and single-site anisotropy, respectively.

Low-temperature thermodynamic properties of a random anisotropic antiferromagnetic chain

J. E. Hirsch

The low-temperature thermodynamic properties of a spin-\textonehalf{} one-dimensional random anisotropic (Heisenberg-Ising) antiferromagnet described by the Hamiltonian $H=\ensuremath{\Sigma}{i}^{}{J}_{i}({\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{x}^{i}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{x}^{i+1}+{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{y}^{i}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{y}^{i+1}+\ensuremath{\gamma}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{z}^{i}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{z}^{i+1})$ are studied as a function of disorder and anisotropy. The ${J}_{i}>~0$ are independent random variables obeying a probability distribution $P(J)$, and $0<~\ensuremath{\gamma}<~\ensuremath{\infty}$. The approach used is a numerical implementation of a real-space renormalization-group (RG) method previously introduced. The isotropic Heisenberg case ($\ensuremath{\gamma}=1$), the $\mathrm{XY}$ case ($\ensuremath{\gamma}=0$). and the Ising case ($\ensuremath{\gamma}=\ensuremath{\infty}$) are fixed points of the RG transformation. It is found that in the $\mathrm{XY}$ region $\ensuremath{\gamma}<~1$, including the Heisenberg point, the system exhibits singular behavior in the thermodynamic properties for arbitrary probability distributions for the couplings. For the $\mathrm{XY}$ limit ($\ensuremath{\gamma}=0$) this is in agreement with known exact results. The functional form for the low-temperature susceptibility is found to be $\ensuremath{\chi}\ensuremath{\sim}\frac{1}{(T{\mathrm{ln}}^{m}(\frac{T}{{T}_{0}}))}$ in the entire region $0<~\ensuremath{\gamma}<~1$ for arbitrary probability distributions. In the Ising region ($\ensuremath{\gamma}>1$) the susceptibility shows an approximate power-law divergence for small anisotropy but goes eventually to zero as $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$. Possible relevance of these results to recent experiments on Qn${(\mathrm{TCNQ})}_{2}$ is discussed.
