Abstract

The method for estimating the gain coefficient spectrum of an erbium-doped fiber (EDF) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The method employs a net gain-loss measurement that uses the 4I(13/2) level pumping of the EDF and the McCumber relation. A formula used to obtain the quotient of the gain and loss coefficient from the net gain-loss measurement is derived to determine the parameter in the McCumber relation. It is confirmed that the gain coefficient spectrum of an EDF estimated with the method coincides with the value estimated using a conventional net gain-loss measurement that employs the 4I(11/2) level pumping. The method is successfully applied to an erbium/ytterbium-doped fiber, for which it is impossible to perform a conventional net gain-loss measurement with pumping at the 4I(11/2) level of erbium ions because of the absorption transition of ytterbium ions from 2F(7/2) to 2F(5/2) levels.

Erbium-Doped-Silica Photonic Crystal Fiber Characterization Method: Description and Experimental Check

J. A. Sánchez-Martín, M. Á. Rebolledo, José Miguel Álvarez +3 more

The present paper reports and discusses a characterization method for erbium-doped-silica photonic crystal fibers based on the measurement of pump power attenuation and gain together with the McCumber theory. The absorption and emission cross sections and the passive losses of the fiber were obtained from a fitting procedure of theoretical to experimental values. The method was checked by means of a home-made photonic crystal fiber to verify its reliability. Finally, it was found that the characteristic parameters obtained by this method can be used to accurately simulate the performance of the fiber and therefore to design devices based on it.

Attenuation and fluorescence characteristics of optical signals propagating in an erbium-doped fiber

Chien‐Yuan Chen, Sien Chi

For a monochromatic input signal launched into an erbium-doped fiber (EDF), a broadband fluorescence spectrum will be generated with total power approximately 30 dB lower than input signal power. The forward fluorescence power decays slowly at long EDF length due to smaller absorption cross section for wavelength components away from absorption peak. Care must be taken when the conventional cutback method is used to measure the attenuation of the optical signals in an EDF. The backward fluorescence power is saturated to a constant level, and the spectrum does not change for long EDF.>

"Analytical Model of Pulse Amplification in Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier "

Nour. A. Naser, Muhammed. R. Harb, Hassan Abid Yasser

"Doping a part of the optical fiber core by (Er3+ ) ions in presence of external pumping power will lead to form the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA).The performance of this optical amplifier depends on (the power and the wavelength of the pumping laser, the power and wavelength of the input signal, amplifier length, ion concentration). These parameters will affect the characteristics of EDFA such as amplifier gain, gain saturation, noise figure and output power. However, these characteristics can be determined by solving the EDFA propagation and rate equations. The solution of these equations of two-level laser medium can be done numerically. In this paper, we are proposed a novel method to solve these equations. The reconstructed results are perfectly coincided the well known numerical results.

Evaluation of ^4I_15/2 and ^4I_13/2 Stark-level energies in erbium-doped aluminosilicate glass fibers

E. Desurvire, J. R. Simpson

Spectroscopic measurements of fluorescence and absorption in an erbium-doped fiber permit the evaluation of the Stark-level energies of the (4)I(15/2) and (4)I(13/2) manifolds in Er:glass. The data permit the allocation of the individual laser transitions associated with the room-temperature gain spectrum of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers operating near lambda = 1.53 microm.

Spectral dependence of two-wave mixing efficiency in saturable erbium-doped fibers

Serguei I. Stepanov, Marcos Plata Sánchez, Eliseo Hernández

Detailed experimental data on the efficiency of two-wave mixing via population dynamic grating in erbium-doped fiber (EDF) with saturable optical absorption are presented. The measurements were performed for spectral region 1490–1560 nm of the EDF absorption/gain spectrum, both for absorption and for phase (refractive index) components of the dynamic grating. The reported data confirm the earlier results published for some particular recording wavelengths. In particular, the amplitude gratings recorded in EDF in the central part of this region (1520–1560 nm) are significantly less efficient (by more than 1 order of magnitude) than it can be estimated from measurements of a spatially uniform fiber absorption saturation. It is shown, however, that this effect cannot be explained by spatial migration of the Er3+ excited state. At the short-wavelength spectrum side around 1490 nm, the disagreement between the experimentally observed and the evaluated grating amplitude is minimum (∼0.3) and can, probably, be attributed to the polarization mismatch in the counterpropagating recording waves.

Excited-state absorption in erbium-doped silica fiber with simultaneous excitation at 977 and 1531 nm

Yuri O. Barmenkov, Alexander V. Kir’yanov, ANA DINORA GUZMAN CHAVEZ +2 more

We report a study of the excited-state absorption (ESA) in erbium-doped silica fiber (EDF) pumped at 977 nm, when the fiber is simultaneously excited by signal radiation at 1531 nm. We show, both experimentally and theoretically, that ESA efficiency at 977 nm gets strongly enhanced only in the presence of signal power. Experimentally, this conclusion is supported through the detection of upconversion emission, a “fingerprint” of the ESA process, and through the measurements of the EDF nonlinear transmission coefficient for the pump wavelength, which is sensitive to the ESA value. It is shown that the experimental data are precisely modeled with an advanced five-level Er3+ model developed for the EDF.
