Abstract

An analytic method of decoupling of physical factors is used to investigate the relationship between the temporal and spatial coherence of a randomly modulated light pulse representing a superposition of a signal and noise in a medium with a local nonlinearity. An analysis is made of the factors that influence the transformation of the spatial and temporal characteristics of a diffracted and spreading light pulse in a nonlinear medium. The relationships governing the mutual influence of the signal and noise, resulting in changes in the regular envelopes and statistical characteristics, are determined.

Processing of noisy signals by four-wave mixing

V. V. Kabanov

Possibilities are considered of noisy signals processing by four-wave mixing (FWM) of laser radiation in a two-level medium with taking into account of the combined influence of spatial phase matching, nonlinear response inertia, and phase cross-modulation. Regularities of time behavior transformation of randomly modulated signal are collated with particularities of FWM-reflectivity of deterministic pulses. Results are discussed of correlation analysis of FWM with partaking in a random way amplitude (or phase) modulated signals.

Spatial statistics of pulsed partly coherent radiation in a medium with a thermal nonlinearity

Sergey M. Babichenko, Valeriy P. Kandidov

The approximation of small fluctuations of the optical field is used to solve the transient problem of conversion of the spatial statistics of partly coherent radiation in a randomly inhomogeneous weakly absorbing medium. Pulsed radiation is considered and it is assumed that the pulse duration does not exceed the lifetime of inhomogeneities. Equations derived for the coherence functions of field perturbations are used to study in detail the dynamics of the statistical characteristics of radiation, such as the correlation radius, variance of the fluctuations, correlation functions of the amplitudes, and phase of the field perturbations.

Influence of the medium nonlinearity on the reflection of monochromatic and pulsed radiation

I. V. Zlodeev, Dmitrii I. Sementsov

The features of Gaussian pulse reflection from a nonlinear medium with the resonance frequency dependence of permittivity are investigated. The results of numerical analysis of the equations describing the light-field distribution in reflected pulses with s and p polarizations are presented. The influence of the intensity, incidence angle, carrier frequency, and incident-pulse duration on the reflected pulse envelope shape is discussed.

Influence of diffraction on formation of photon echo signals

Sergey M. Zakharov, Yu D Lysak, Edward A. Manykin

A theoretical analysis is made of the formation of photon echo signals under one-photon resonance conditions when a medium is excited by light pulses with a finite transverse aperture. Basic equations are formulated and a method of solving these within the limits of perturbation theory using Green's functions is indicated. An analysis is made of some analytic solutions. An expression is derived to describe the spatial profile of the photon echo signal under diffraction conditions.

Average Number of Coherent Modes for Pulse Random Fields

Alexander M. Lazaruk, Nikolay V. Karelin

Some consequences of spatio-temporal symmetry for the deterministic decomposition of complex light fields into factorized components are considered. This enables to reveal interrelations between spatial and temporal coherence properties of wave. An estimation of average number of the decomposition terms is obtained in the case of statistical ensemble of light pulses.

Change in the shape of frequency-modulated light pulses during amplification

E G Lariontsev, V. N. Serkin

An analysis is made of the propagation of a frequency-modulated light pulse in a linearly amplifying medium with an inhomogeneously broadened gain profile. It is shown that a pulse can be compressed considerably during amplification. Conditions are established under which strong distortions of the pulse shape may result in its splitting. An analysis is made of the influence of the phase self-modulation of radiation on the shape of ultrashort light pulses in oscillators and amplifiers.
