Abstract

We propose to use the sensitivity of the population transfer in three-level L-atoms to the relative phases and amplitudes of frequency-chirped short bichromatic laser pulses for coherent, fast and robust storage and processing of phase or intensity optical information. The information is being written into the excited state population which in a second step is transferred in a fast and robust way into a nondecaying storage level. It is shown that an arbitrary superposition of the ground states can be generated by controlling the relative phase between the laser pulses.

Three-level Λ atom in the field of frequency-chirped bichromatic laser pulses: Writing and storage of optical phase information

Gagik P. Djotyan, Jozsef S. Bakos, Zs. Sörlei

We investigate the behavior of a three-level atomic system with \ensuremath{\Lambda} structure of levels in the field of a sequence of short frequency-chirped bichromatic laser pulses (BLP's) in the adiabatic passage regime of interaction. We show that the efficiency of the population transfer in this atomic system is sensitive to the relative phase of the pulses forming the BLP when the atom is prepared in a coherent superposition of its two ground states initially. We propose to use this sensitivity for coherent fast and robust writing and reading of optical phase information. The initial preparation of the atom in the ``dark'' superposition state is suggested through the action of a sequence of a few frequency-chirped BLP's with duration longer than the atomic relaxation time.

Optical phase information writing and storage in populations of metastable quantum states

Gagik P. Djotyan, N. Sandor, Jozsef S. Bakos +1 more

We propose a scheme for robust writing and storage of optical phase information in populations of metastable states of the atoms with a tripod structure of levels by using frequency-chirped laser pulses. The method provides much longer storage times compared with the schemes based on the collective atomic spin coherences. A negligible excitation of the atom provides immunity to decoherence induced by decay of the excited states. The method is robust against small-to-medium variations in the laser pulse intensity and speed of the chirp and, being insensitive to resonance conditions, it is effective both in homogeneously and inhomogeneously broadened media.

Population transfer and generation of arbitrary superpositions of quantum states in a four-level system using a single-chirped laser pulse

Zhenhua Zhang, Xihua Yang, Xiaona Yan

We propose a scheme for coherent control of population transfer and arbitrary superpositions of quantum states by a single-chirped laser pulse in a Λ-type excited-doublet four-level system. It is shown that selective, efficient, and robust population transfer from the initial state to the target states (excited or ground) can be achieved via chirped adiabatic passage when the pulse bandwidth is smaller than about 1/10 of the energy separations between the excited-doublet levels and between the ground states. Moreover, arbitrary coherent superpositions between the excited-doublet states, or between the higher ground state and either of the excited-doublet states, can be created by appropriately tuning the chirp rate and detuning the laser field. The proposed flexible method of coherent control of population transfer and arbitrary superpositions between the initially unpopulated states requires only a single pulse, and is robust against variations in the laser parameters, which has potential applications in quantum information processing.

Creation of a coherent superposition of quantum states by a single frequency-chirped short laser pulse

Gagik P. Djotyan, Jozsef S. Bakos, G. Demeter +3 more

Traditional schemes for coherent population transfer or generation of coherent superposition states in multilevel atoms or molecules usually utilize two or more laser beams with radiation bandwidth smaller than the frequency interval between the working levels. We show the possibility of creation of the coherent superposition of three metastable states of a four-level atom with tripodlike level structure using a single short frequency-chirped laser pulse. The bandwidth of the pulse envelope (without chirp) must be comparable to or exceed the frequency distance between the two metastable levels. No appreciable excitation of the atom takes place during the creation of the coherent superposition state, thus diminishing significantly the effect of decoherence due to the spontaneous decay of the excited state. The proposed method of creation of superposition states is robust against variations in the laser pulse parameters. Since this method does not require maintaining steady resonance with the atomic transitions (owing to the frequency chirp of the laser pulse), it is effective both in homogeneously and inhomogeneously broadened media.

Population transfer in three-level Λ atoms with Doppler-broadened transition lines by a single frequency-chirped short laser pulse

Gagik P. Djotyan, Jozsef S. Bakos, G. Demeter +1 more

We examine interaction of a single frequency-chirped laser pulse with three-level atoms that have a Λ configuration of levels. We show that it is possible to produce complete fast and robust population transfer of all atoms of the ensemble with Doppler-broadened transition lines from one ground state into the other ground state with negligibly small temporary population of the excited state by controlling the intensity of the laser pulse and the direction and speed of the frequency chirp.

Coherent control of quantum states by quadratically chirped short laser pulses

G. P. Djotyan, A. A. Avetisyan, A. P. Djotyan

We present a novel scheme for coherent manipulation of populations and robust creation of arbitrary coherent superposition of metastable states of a quantum system with lambda configuration of operating energy levels using laser pulses with a quadratically chirped carrier frequency. The case of a single broadband laser pulse is considered, when the frequency spectrum of the pulse exceeds the frequency distance between the metastable energy levels of the system. The results of the dressed state analysis and numerical simulation are presented, demonstrating reliable and robust creation of an arbitrary coherent superposition of metastable states by changing the parameters of laser pulses.
