Abstract

Theoretical analysis of nonconventional schemes of four-wave mixing (FWM) using additional irradiation of resonance medium, which enables the realization of noncoherent optical control of the process efficiency, has been carried out. The possibility of significant increase in the phase conjugate reflectivity and decrease in the pump wave intensity, required for realization of optical bistability, has been shown. Optical control and intensification of FWM in Rhodamine 6G solution have been experimentally accomplished

Dynamic hologram magnification with incoherent optical pumping

Omar A. Ormachea, Alexei L. Tolstik

In the present work consideration is given to theoretical and experimental analysis of the possibilities for improving the efficiency of multiwave mixing in the process of dynamic hologram recording in solutions of complex organic compounds with additional irradiation of resonant medium at a frequency falling within the absorption band from the excited level. Three- and seven-fold increase in the diffraction efficiency has been realized in Rhodamine 6G dye for four- and six-wave missing, respectively.

Four-wave mixing in microresonators with resonance and thermal nonlinearities

José Luis Arce Diego, Félix Fanjul-Vélez, David Pereda Cubián +3 more

The results of theoretical and experimental investigations into four-wave mixing in microresonators with resonant and thermal nonlinearities are presented. Theoretical models of dynamically-induced optical gratings have been derived in two cases of the light beams interaction: when a nonlinear medium is incorporated into Fabry-Perot interferometer and for the off-cavity configuration. Experimental realization of intracavity four-wave mixing performed using ethanol solution of Rodamine 6G as a nonlinear medium. It is shown that the use of nonlinear interferometer increases significantly an efficiency of dynamic optical gratings. The potentialities for obtaining of high efficiency conversion of optical information owing the spectroscopic properties of multilevel resonant media are discussed.

Spatial-temporal transformation of light field by multiwave mixing in resonant media

Alexei L. Tolstik

This work presents the results of theoretical and experimental studies into the processes of light field transformations upon multiwave mixing. The principal aim is to develop a theory of multiwave mixing in complex molecular media in conditions of exhibited internal (scattering from dynamic gratings) and external (resonator) feedback, to determine a mechanism of light field transformations at the dynamic holograms and by nonlinear interferometers, to work out and introduce into practice novel nonlinear-optical methods for the control over the energy and spatial-temporal characteristics of light beams. The possibilities for phase conjugation with simultaneous frequency conversion of a signal wave are analyzed. The methods aimed at the realization of various types of optical bistability, spatial hysteresis, regular and chaotic intensity oscillations are proposed and investigated.

Degenerate four-wave mixing in photorefractive media in the presence of biasing incoherent illumination

N Birla, K.N. Tripathi, Avinashi Kapoor +1 more

The effect of biasing illumination on the degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) in absorbing photorefractive (PR) media has been investigated. The input beams are considered to be spatially uniform. The analysis has been made both for transmission and reflection geometry. Considering pump beam depletion and the slowly varying amplitude approximation, nonlinear coupled wave equations are obtained and have been solved numerically by a shooting method. The effect of different parameters such as input beam intensities ratio, thickness of the interacting medium on the phase conjugate reflectively (PCR) has been investigated. It has been observed that PCR can be controlled to a large extent by controlling the biasing intensity.

Optical phase conjugation in saturable absorbers

Gilmore J. Dunning, Juan Francisco Lam

Current experimental studies of degenerate four-wave mixing in saturable absorbers1,2 have shown that the dependence of the reflectivity on the pump intensity exhibits a double maxima. This phenomenon can arise from the fact that the medium approximates a set of four-level quantum systems. We have carried out a detailed analysis of the nonlinear processes of degenerate four-wave mixing in a four-level system. Because resonant saturable absorbers are being considered for systems applications, e.g., optical phase conjugation and wide FOV filters, the results presented are relevant to various optical phase conjugation devices. There are two distinct regimes which are of interest. The first case is when the intramolecular relaxation is very weak or absent. The second is when the intramolecular relaxation is strong. For the weak case the medium behaves like a set of two distinct dipole radiation sources which can generate interference effects.
