Abstract

The possibility of phase conjugation with simultaneous doubling of the light-wave phase and frequency upon nondegenerate four-wave mixing has been suggested and substantiated theoretically. The dependence of the energy efficiency of double-phase conjugation on the spectroscopic characteristics of the multilevel resonant media has been analyzed.

Nondegenerate resonant multiwave mixing, and frequency-doubled phase conjugation

Nondegenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) has been used for wavelength conversion of optical information.1 In such experiments, two beams F-P (frequency ω1) intersect in a nonlinear medium with a small crossing angle θ (≈ 10 mrad), while a third beam B {frequency ω2) is nearly counterpro- pagating to F [Fig. 1(a)]. This can be viewed as real-time holography with frequency conversion.1 However, the physics differ considerably when the medium is transparent at frequency ω1, as there is no optically induced grating. This occurs when FWM is based on resonant two-photon, ω1 + ω2, absorption (frequencies ω1 and ω2 being resonant with a cascade three-level system and ω1 coupling unpopulated excited states). One interesting feature is that the two-photon coherence is nearly Doppler-free and does not depend much on the θ angle.

Nondegenerate two-photon phase conjugation

Barbara A. Capron, Murray Sargent

Our semiclassical theory of two-photon multiwave mixing1 is a generalization of the degenerate four-wave mixing case2 to treat nondegenerate pump/signal/conjugate frequencies. We apply that theory to four-wave mixing in two-photon media. We present explicit formulas for the nondegenerate signal/conjugate absorption and coupling coefficients for cases for which the two-photon Stark shifts are sufficiently small compared to the homogeneous linewidths. More general cases require that the spatial hole burning averages be performed numerically. We find intricate dependencies of the transmission and reflection spectra on the pump intensity and on dynamic Stark shifts. In particular, the reflection coefficients do not necessarily bleach to zero as the pump intensity is increased indefinitely, and interferences occur between pure index and mixed absorption/index contributions

Four-wave mixing in multilevel media at spatially homogenous irradiation

Theoretical analysis of nonconventional schemes of four-wave mixing (FWM) using additional irradiation of resonance medium, which enables the realization of noncoherent optical control of the process efficiency, has been carried out. The possibility of significant increase in the phase conjugate reflectivity and decrease in the pump wave intensity, required for realization of optical bistability, has been shown. Optical control and intensification of FWM in Rhodamine 6G solution have been experimentally accomplished

Investigation of degenerate four-wave mixing and phase conjugation in organic dye solutions (A)

Cunkai Wu, FAN JUN-YIN, Zhiying Wang

Phase conjugation of backward-and forward-wave produced by degenerate four-wave mixing using a nearly resonantly enhanced nonlinearity in four-level organic dye solutions was investigated. The conversion efficiency of 22% had been obtained in a 2.5 X 10-5 - molar solution of Chlorophyll A in methylalcohol with a 5 mm interaction length and a pumping energy of ~ 8 mJ from SH of a Q-switched Nd: YAG. Degene-rate four-wave mixing by two-photon resonant-enhancement in the solution of rhodamine 6G in alcohol was studied. Measurements were performed which described the dependence of nonlinear reflectivities on the molar concentrations of the media and the intensities of the pumping and object waves. Phase conjugation characteristics of forward-wave in four-wave mixing process were theoretically analysed. Experiments have cofirmed the theoretical prediction. The method of quartet degenerate four-wave mixing had been ex-tended to the doublet degenerate case. Using this method image conversion from 1.06 μm to 5320 ? had been realized with a conversion efficiency of 25% in a 5 mm long satu-rable absorber made of organic dye 9740 solution in dichloroethane. Theoretical analy-sis showed that using a medium, which is a near resonant absorber for the infrared object wave but is transparent for the visible reconstruction wave, the conversion efficiency may be well in excess of unity.

Phase conjugation of backward-and forward-wave produced by degenerate four-wave mixing using a nearly resonantly enhanced nonlinearity in four-level organic dye solutions was investigated. The conversion efficiency of 22% has been obtained in a 2.5×10-5-molar solution of chlorophyll A in methylalcohol with a 5mm interaction length and a pumping energy of ~8mj from SH of a Q-switched Nd:YAG. Degenerate four-wave mixing by two-photon resonant-enhancement in the solution of rhodamine 6G in alcohol was investigated. Phase conjugation characteristics of forward-wave in four-wave mixing process were theoretically analysed. Experiments have confirmed the theoretical prediction. The method of quartet degenerate four-wave mixing has been extended to the doublet degenerate casa. Using this method, image conversion from 1.06μm to 5320 A has been realized with a conversion efficiency of 25% in a 5 mm long saturable absorber made of organic dye 9740 solution in diehloroethane.
