Abstract

Electromagnetically induced transparency in a three-level Lambda-type molecular system with nonzero permanent dipole moments is investigated. It is shown that in the (2+2)-transition processes, when the sign of d(21), the difference in permanent dipole moments of the probe transition, is positive, perfect electromagnetically induced transparency with steep normal dispersion could be obtained under specific conditions. In contrast, when the sign of d(21) is negative, surprisingly gain without inversion with steep anomalous dispersion could be attained.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in a Λ-type molecular system with permanent dipole moments revisited

Niharika Singh, Q. V. Lawande, Richard D’Souza +1 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a molecular three-level Λ system with permanent dipole moments and undergoing m- and n-photon transitions by pump and probe lasers is investigated. Analytical expressions are derived for probe absorption spectrum and dispersion for a medium of stationary as well as thermal molecules. Contrary to the earlier study by Zhou et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 131, 034105 (2009)], we observe no amplification in 2 + 2 photon process when the sign of the difference of the permanent moments of the excited and the ground levels is reversed. Reasons for these contrasting observations are discussed. Our study shows that the permanent moments essentially damp the laser-molecule Rabi frequency to result in narrower EIT line width and larger group velocity index. These effects are further enhanced when the order of the multi-photon process is increased. The importance of the virtual mechanism is discussed by considering the special case of 2 + 1 photon EIT.

Optical bistability in a three-level lambda molecule with permanent dipole moments

Seyyed Hossein Asadpour, HAMID RAHIMPOUR SOLEIMANI

Optical bistability (OB) in a unidirectional ring cavity with a three-level Λ-type molecular system with nonzero permanent dipole moments is discussed. We found that in the (2+2)-transition processes, the permanent dipole moments induced new quantum coherence effects which lead to controlling the OB behavior of the system. Moreover, we showed that the group velocity can be switched from slow to fast or vice versa under specific conditions of difference in permanent dipole moments of the probe transition.

Permanent dipole moments induced new coherent effects in absorption and dispersion of a three-level molecule

Guoli Ma, Baoguo Shi, Yanli Yao +2 more

We study the effects of quantum coherence induced by permanent dipole moments in a three-level dipolar molecule. We find that the absorption and dispersion properties can be significantly modified by this coherence under different conditions. It is shown that electromagnetically induced transparency, enhancement of the index of refraction, lasing without population inversion, and anomalous dispersion are all dependent on this interference.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in a dipolar molecular system with Laguerre–Gaussian mode

Abhay Mishra, B. N. Jagatap

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a molecular three-level Λ system with permanent dipole moments (PDMs) and the control beam in Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) mode is investigated. The results are compared with the atomic system where the use of LG mode yields EIT linewidth narrower than that with Gaussian mode. It is shown that in contrast to the atomic system, the linewidth of EIT in the dipolar molecular system with LG mode can be narrower as well as broader than that with Gaussian mode depending on the strength of the effective laser-molecule coupling. Peculiar space dependence of Bessel function in the laser-molecule coupling is at the origin of this distinctive feature. The results are further augmented by a discussion on PDM-mediated multi-photon absorption and multi-photon EIT profiles with LG and Gaussian modes.

Conversion between electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption in a three-level lambda system

Sapam Ranjita Chanu, Kanhaiya Pandey, Vasant Natarajan A

We show that it is possible to change from a subnatural electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) feature to a subnatural electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) feature in a (degenerate) three-level Λ system. The change is effected by turning on a second control beam counter-propagating with respect to the first beam. We observe this change in the D 2 line of Rb in a room temperature vapor cell. The observations are supported by density-matrix analysis of the complete sublevel structure including the effect of Doppler averaging, but can be understood qualitatively as arising due to the formation of N -type systems with the two control beams. Since many of the applications of EIT and EIA rely on the anomalous dispersion near the resonances, this introduces a new ability to control the sign of the dispersion.
