Raman-induced Kerr effect with nonmonochromatic waves

Abstract

We discuss the theory of Raman-induced Kerr effect (RIKE) when excited by nonmonochromatic waves. The maxima and minima of the lineshape are shifted farther apart when pumped by linearly polarized nonmonochromatic waves. The shift varies linearly with the sum of the pump and probe linewidths. Certain other features are also predicted in agreement with experimental results.

Coherent phenomena involved in the time-resolved optical Kerr effect

J. L. Oudar

The effect of parametric coupling between pump and probe beams in time-resolved optical Kerr effect is theoretically discussed for various experimental configurations. It is shown that with a cicularly polarized pump beam, the polarization changes induced on a nearly collinear probe beam are due to this coherence effect only. In other configurations, this parametric coupling can appear as an additional contribution to the observed signal, especially when pump and probe are derived from the same laser beam. It is pointed out that this coupling can occur not only when the pump and probe beams are at the same wavelength, but also when the difference or the sum of their frequencies can excite a Raman or a two-photon resonance in the medium.

Two-photon resonant four-wave mixing with non-monochromatic waves

NILOY KUMAR DUTTA

The two-photon resonant four-wave mixing processes are investigated when they are excited by non-monochromatic pump waves. Expressions for the intensity and linewidth of the generated wave are obtained. It is shown that the intensity of the generated wave is a Lorentzian about the two-photon resonance. The width of the Lorentzian varies linearly with the pump linewidth. The maximum and minimum in the coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) lineshape are shifted farther when excited by non-monochromatic beams. The shift varies linearly with the pump linewidth. In the incoherent regime, the intensity of the wave generated is directly proportional to the interaction length (L) and its linewidth Delta omega approximately 1/L.

Optical Kerr effect in glass fiber waveguides with weak and strong birefringence

Evgenii M Dianov, Э. А. Захидов, Aleksandr Ya Karasik +4 more

A birefringence induced by the optical Kerr effect in single-mode glass fiber waveguides was investigated. A study was made of the dependences of the process of inducing the birefringence on the natural birefringence, on the orientation of the polarization of the radiation, and on the pump radiation power. Oscillations of the intensity of a probe wave were observed under certain conditions of excitation of these fiber waveguides with pump radiation.

Theory of amplification of the first Stokes component in a nonmonochromatic pump field under stimulated Raman scattering conditions

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, E M Zemskov, V I Chernen'kiĭ

A theoretical analysis is made of the problem of parallel amplification of the Stokes signal in a nonmonochromatic spatially inhomogeneous pump field in stimulated Raman scattering. Expressions are obtained for the spatial and temporal characteristics of the process of amplification of the Stokes signal. It is shown that in the course of amplification the slowly varying amplitude of the Stokes signal field becomes similar to the slowly varying amplitude of the pump field. The relationships obtained apply also, subject to certain restrictions, to other types of scattering.

Transmission and reflection spectra of a Raman induced grating in atomic media

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, S. A. Myslivets

The spectral properties of an electromagnetically induced grating that is based on the spatial modulation of the Raman gain in the field of a standing pump wave in a three-level homogeneous medium have been discussed. It has been shown that, by varying the intensity or the frequency of the pump field, one can control the transmission and reflection spectra, while the transmission and reflection coefficients of the probe (Raman) wave can simultaneously be greater than unity. The influence of the nonideality of the standing wave on the spectral characteristics of the grating has been studied.

Influence of the spectral width and statistics of a Stokes signal on the efficiency of stimulated Raman scattering of nonmonochromatic pump radiation

G. P. Dzhotyan, Yu E D'yakov, Iosif G. Zubarev +2 more

A theoretical and experimental investigation was made of the amplification of a Stokes signal in a multimode pump field when the ratio of the spectral widths of the interacting fields was varied. In the pump intensity range I p < I cr ( I cr was a critical intensity) the gain increment was considerably less than the static value and it was governed entirely by the spectral distributions of the pump and Stokes signal. In the range I p > I cr the gain increment tended to the static value. An anomalous scatter of the Raman amplifier gain was observed experimentally for Δ ν s ≈Δ ν p ≫Δ ν l (Δ ν s ,Δ ν p , and Δ ν l were the line widths of the Stokes signal, pump, and spontaneous stimulated Raman scattering). A theory developed for the purpose indicated that the scatter was observed because the phase relationships between the interacting waves at the input into the medium varied from one measurement to another.
