Quantum jumps in Landau-Zener transitions in the dissipative dynamics of a superconducting qubit

Abstract

The effect of noise on the populations of the levels of a qubit in individual experimental implementations has been studied by the quantum trajectory method. A transition to the average dynamics obtained by means of multiple measurements of the state of the qubit is analyzed. The developed method is applied to investigate the effect of noise on the interference pattern appearing in the amplitude spectroscopy of the qubit in a strong variable field owing to Landau-Zener transitions. The effect of the number of repeated measurements and the fluctuation of the phase of a pump pulse on the formation of the response of the qubit to the external field has been analyzed. This makes it possible to interpret recent experiments in terms of individual implementations and averaged dynamics.

Relaxation dynamics of superconducting Josephson cubits in a strong alternating field

A. I. Gel’man, Сатанин Аркадий Михайлович

The quantum trajectory method has been applied to study the influence of noise on the level populations of a cubit in separate realizations of the experiment and to follow the transition to the averaged dynamics obtained by multiple measurements of the cubit state. As an example of applying the developed method, the influence of noise on the interference pattern appearing in amplitude spectroscopy due to the Landau-Zener transitions in an alternating field has been analyzed. The influence of the number of repeated measurements and fluctuations in the phase of the exciting pulse during formation of the response of a cubit to the external field has been studied, which made it possible to interpret recent experiments from the viewpoint of single realizations and averaged dynamics.

Mesoscopic fluctuations of the population of a qubit in a strong alternating field

M. V. Denisenko, Сатанин Аркадий Михайлович

Fluctuations of the population of a Josephson qubit in an alternating field, which is a superposition of electromagnetic pulses with large amplitudes, are studied. It is shown that the relative phase of pulses is responsible for the rate of Landau–Zener transitions and, correspondingly, for the frequency of transitions between adiabatic states. The durations of pulses incident on the qubit are controlled with an accuracy of the field period, which results in strong mesoscopic fluctuations of the population of the qubit. Similar to the magnetic field in mesoscopic physics, the relative phase of pulses can destroy the interference pattern of the population of the qubit. The influence of the duration of the pulse and noise on the revealed fluctuation effects is studied.

Dynamics of interacting qubits in a strong alternating electromagnetic field

M. V. Denisenko, Сатанин Аркадий Михайлович, Sahel Ashhab +1 more

The populations of energy levels of interacting qubits have been studied as functions of the field amplitude and other control parameters for a constant frequency of the external electromagnetic field. It has been found that the qubit coupling constant strongly affects the quantum-coherent Landau-Zener transitions between the qubit states and the formation of an interference pattern in level populations, depending on the field parameters. It has been demonstrated that it is possible to determine the qubit coupling constant by Landau-Zener interferometry.

Dynamic transition in Landau-Zener-Stückelberg interferometry of dissipative systems: The case of the flux qubit

Alejandro Ferrón, Daniel Domı́nguez, María José Sánchez

We study Landau-Zener-St\"uckelberg (LZS) interferometry in multilevel systems coupled to an Ohmic quantum bath. We consider the case of superconducting flux qubits driven by a dc+ac magnetic fields, but our results can apply to other similar systems. We find a dynamic transition manifested by a symmetry change in the structure of the LZS interference pattern, plotted as a function of ac amplitude and dc detuning. The dynamic transition is from an LZS pattern with nearly symmetric multiphoton resonances to antisymmetric multiphoton resonances at long times (above the relaxation time). We also show that the presence of a resonant mode in the quantum bath can impede the dynamic transition when the resonant frequency is of the order of the qubit gap. Our results are obtained by a numerical calculation of the finite time and the asymptotic stationary population of the qubit states, using the Floquet-Markov approach to solve a realistic model of the flux qubit considering up to ten energy levels.

Landau-Zener transitions in a superconducting flux qubit

J. Johansson, M. H. S. Amin, A. J. Berkley +7 more

We report an experimental measurement of Landau-Zener transitions on an individual flux qubit within a multiqubit superconducting chip. The method used isolates a single qubit, tunes its tunneling amplitude $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ into the limit where $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ is much less than both the temperature $T$ and the decoherence-induced energy level broadening, and forces it to undergo a Landau-Zener transition. We find that the behavior of the qubit agrees to a high degree of accuracy with theoretical predictions for Landau-Zener transition probabilities for a double-well quantum system coupled to a nonMarkovian $1/f$ magnetic flux noise.

Quantum interference induced by multiple Landau-Zener transitions in a strongly driven rf-SQUID qubit

Yiwen Wang, Shanhua Cong, Xueda Wen +7 more

We irradiated an rf superconducting quantum interference device qubit with large-amplitude and high-frequency electromagnetic field. Population transitions between macroscopic distinct quantum states due to multiple Landau-Zener transitions at energy-level avoided crossings were observed. The qubit population on the excited states as a function of flux detuning and microwave power exhibits interference patterns. Some features are found in the interference and a model based on rate equations can well address these features.
