Enhancement of six-wave mixing by atomic coherence in a four-level inverted Y system

Abstract

The authors have considered the coexisting dressed four-wave mixing (FWM) and six-wave mixing (SWM) in an open four-level inverted Y configuration. The authors also report an experimental observation of optical pumping-assisted FWM and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-assisted SWM. The efficient SWM can be selected by EIT window and controlled by the coupling as well as dressed field detuning and power. Due to EIT and optical pumping assistance, the enhanced SWM signal is more than ten times lager than the coexisting FWM signal.

Observation of eight-wave mixing via electromagnetically induced transparency

Zhenkun Wu, Chenzhi Yuan, Zhaoyang Zhang +5 more

We successfully observed the nonlinear eight-wave mixing (EWM) signal via one electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) window and double optical pumping channels in an open five-level atomic system of 87 Rb. By carefully controlling the arrangement of the incident laser beams, the corresponding four-wave mixing (FWM), six-wave mixing (SWM) and EWM signals can be made to coexist with similar signal amplitudes and transmit through the same EIT window in such open five-level atomic system.

Opening Four-Wave Mixing and Six-Wave Mixing Channels via Dual Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Windows

Yanpeng Zhang, Andy W. Brown, Min Xiao

Highly efficient four-wave mixing (FWM) and six-wave mixing (SWM) processes can coexist in a four-level Y-type atomic system due to atomic coherence. The simultaneously opened dual electromagnetically induced transparency windows in this four-level atomic system allow observation of these two nonlinear optical processes at the same time, which enables detailed studies of the interplay between the FWM and SWM processes. Three-photon and five-photon destructive interferences are also observed.

Controlling four-wave and six-wave mixing processes in multilevel atomic systems

Yanpeng Zhang, Utsab Khadka, Blake Anderson +1 more

We experimentally demonstrate that four-wave mixing (FWM) and six-wave mixing (SWM) processes can be selectively turned on and off in a close-cycled four-level atomic system. Under certain laser beam configuration, the FWM and SWM processes can be made to coexist with similar signal amplitudes and transmit through the same electromagnetically induced transparency window in such folded four-level atomic system. By introducing an additional pumping laser beam connecting to the fifth energy level, both FWM and SWM signals can be greatly enhanced.

Controlling Rydberg-dressed four-wave mixing via dual electromagnetically induced transparency windows

Zhaoyang Zhang, Haijun Tang, Irfan Ahmed +4 more

Rydberg-dressed four-wave mixing (FWM) is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated with two electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) windows generated in a Y-type Rb85 atomic configuration. Such dressing effect related to Rydberg states can lead to enhancement and suppression in the FWM process, which can be manipulated by the frequency detuning, Rabi frequency, and polarization of laser fields. Particularly, with the enhancement condition satisfied, coexisting FWM and Rydberg six-wave mixing (SWM) peaks with ultranarrow linewidth (much less than 30 MHz) are simultaneously observed. The controllable enhancement and suppression in a Rydberg-EIT medium can provide a novel nondestructive nonlinear method to investigate the spectrum involving Rydberg excitation in the atomic ensemble above room temperature.

Controlling four-wave mixing and six-wave mixing in a multi-Zeeman-sublevel atomic system with electromagnetically induced transparency

Yigang Du, Yanpeng Zhang, Cuicui Zuo +8 more

We theoretically investigate the dually dressed electromagnetically induced transparency, and the multidressed four-wave mixing (FWM) and six-wave mixing (SWM) processes in an inverted-$Y$-type atomic system with Zeeman sublevels. The results show that the Zeeman degeneracy of the dark states can be lifted by the dressing field as its intensity is increased. Moreover, the derived analytical expressions indicate that one can, for example, selectively create secondary dark states on the multi-Zeeman-sublevel dark states (by tuning the coupling field), distinguish two different types of dark states generated in two FWM processes (by properly controlling the coupling field intensity), and selectively enhance multi-FWM signals coming from various paths consisting of split Zeeman sublevels (by tuning the dressing field). The SWM signals can be either enhanced or suppressed by controlling the dressing field.

Efficient energy transfer between four-wave-mixing and six-wave-mixing processes via atomic coherence

Yanpeng Zhang, Blake Anderson, Min Xiao

We demonstrate efficient energy exchange during propagation between four-wave-mixing (FWM) and six-wave-mixing (SWM) signals generated in a four-level inverted-Y atomic system, which fall in the electromagnetically induced transparency window. After an initial growth distance for both FWM and SWM fields in the atomic medium, these two nonlinear optical processes compete and exchange energy between them, and eventually reach their respective steady-state values at long interaction distance. This energy exchange phenomenon can be explained by considering established atomic coherences among various atomic states and quantum interferences between three-photon and five-photon excitation pathways. Understanding these high-order nonlinear optical processes and interplays between them can be very important for correlated FWM (or SWM) photon-pair generations and quantum information processing.
