Magneto-Optical Bistability in Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Cd 1-x Mn x Te

Abstract

Magneto-optical bistability in diluted magnetic semiconductor Cd 1-x Mn x Te is realized. The bistability is created by the giant Faraday effect in Cd 1-x Mn x Te and the saturation characteristic of the magneto-optical feedback system. The bistability characteristic depends on the orientation angle α of the polarizers of the Faraday modulator and on the temperature of the sample.

Optical bistability using a magneto-optic modulator

Shinsuke Umegaki, Hiroaki Inoue, Toshihiko T. Yoshino

Optical bistability is realized using a Faraday rotator which has a high rotating power owing to multiple reflections in a planar glass plate. The linearly polarized light is modulated by the coil current of the electromagnet. Optical hysteresis is observed when the current is changed in proportion to the intensity of the light transmitted through the modulator. An application of this device to stabilizing the light intensity of the cw laser intensity is described.

Theoretical analysis of the optical bistability with Faraday effect

Masao Hirano

We have proposed and discussed that an introduction of the Faraday medium to the optical bistable devices brings new and good characteristics on the application to optical sensing. In this paper, characteristics of the optical bistability are analyzed theoretically for the optical bistable operation with the Faraday effect, the threshold power, and several parameter dependences of the characteristic. Consequently, by controlling them with an external magnetic field which is an operatable factor, the optical bistability shows much usefulness and effectiveness by the following points: the controllability of the bistable operation, the reduction in the threshold power, and the enlargement in the discontinuous power variation ratio.

Optical bistability in semiconductor CdHgTe etalon

Qiuhu Shi, Ya-wen Yang

We have observed bistability of the n-type Cd x Hg1− x Te in Auger-dominated in the following conditions: the input probe beam, obtained by splitting the CO2 laser with a ZnSe splitter, was incident upon the CdHgTe detector 1. The output probe beam, passing through the Fabry-Perot etalon, was detected by the CdHgTe detector 2. All beams were chopped using a mechanical chopper with a tunable mark/space ratio between 20:1 at a high speed synchronous motor. The signals of the incident and transmission intensity synchronously detected by using the CdHgTe detectors at 77 K were displayed on an oscilloscope. Our specimen was n-type Cd x Hg1− x Te (x = 0.225) at 77 K, the intrinsic carrier concentration n = 9.8 × 1014 cm-3, the mobility μ = 3.15 × 104 (cm2/V sec). The absorption coefficient α = 72 cm was polished plane parallel to form an etalon 215 μm thick, the reflectivities of which are R F = R B = R = 32%. In our experiment, the incident intensity I is 750 W/cm2 and both the laser mode and power stability met the standards.

Optical polarization bistability in TM wave injected semiconductor lasers

Yoshihiro Mori, J. Shibati, Takao Kajiwara

Experimental results of optical polarization bistability in InGaAsP lasers are reported and the causes of polarization switching and nonlinear response in this bistability are discussed. The input light signal consisted of the transverse magnetic (TM) wave, while the semiconductor lasers operated in a fundamental transverse electric (TE) mode when the light input was not injected. The light output versus light input characteristics were dependent on the input wavelength. Switching times of up to a few hundred picoseconds were achieved for both switch-up and switch-down. It was found that the TE and TM outputs originate from the TE oscillation and the TM amplification, respectively. Calculations using the rate equations showed that the TM input induces the nonlinearity of the carrier density. These results indicate that this bistability is a type of dispersive bistability.>

Theoretical analysis of optical bistability of a faraday medium

Masao Hirano

Abstract An optical bistable device can be useful not only for optical memory but also for optical sensing by using its binary signal process characteristics. In this case, if a nonlinear Faraday medium is used in the optical bistable device, some interesting features can be obtained as already shown by the present author. Those unique characteristics are that, by controlling the polarization direction by an external magnetic field, a multiple interference can also be controlled not only by the phase associated with an optical path variation but also the polarization direction. This paper describes a theoretical analysis of the fluctuation of transmission and reflection as a function of an absorption in a medium besides the incident intensity reduction and discusses the bistability characteristics and the threshold values against the parameters. It is shown that the control of the bistable function, the realization of a low threshold value, and the increase of a discontinuous power variation ratio (= optical intensity ratio between on and off in the binary signal process) at the threshold value are accomplished as the result of the introduction of the external magnetic field control method. Therefore, it can be concluded that a Faraday medium is very useful for an optical bistable device.

Optical phase conjugation in a magnetic photorefractive semiconductor CdMnTe

R. S. Rana, M. Dinu, I. Miotkowski +1 more

Magneto-optical phase conjugation was performed in a diluted magnetic photorefractive semiconductor crystal CdMnTe under an applied magnetic field. The magnetic field removes time-reversal symmetry and quenches orthogonal components of the phase-conjugate signal for selected field strengths. The experimental results as functions of magnetic field and incident polarization angle are in good agreement with coupled-mode theory with transmission gratings during magneto-photorefractive mixing.
