Spontaneous Solitons in the Thermal Equilibrium of a Quasi-1D Bose Gas

Tomasz Karpiuk, Piotr Deuar, Przemysław Bienias +5 more

We show that solitons occur generically in the thermal equilibrium state of a weakly interacting elongated Bose gas, without the need for external forcing or perturbations. This reveals a major new quality to the experimentally widespread quasicondensate state, usually thought of as primarily phase-fluctuating. Thermal solitons are seen in uniform 1D, trapped 1D, and elongated 3D gases, appearing as shallow solitons at low quasicondensate temperatures, becoming widespread and deep as temperature rises. This behavior can be understood via thermal occupation of the type II excitations in the Lieb-Liniger model of a uniform 1D gas. Furthermore, we find that the quasicondensate phase includes very appreciable density fluctuations while leaving phase fluctuations largely unaltered from the standard picture derived from a density-fluctuation-free treatment.

Unified treatment of the quantum fluctuation theorem and the Jarzynski equality in terms of microscopic reversibility

Takaaki Monnai

There are two related theorems which hold even in far from equilibrium, namely fluctuation theorem and Jarzynski equality. Fluctuation theorem states the existence of symmetry of fluctuation of entropy production, while the Jarzynski equality enables us to estimate the free energy change between two states by using irreversible processes. On the other hand, the relationship between these theorems was investigated by Crooks [Phys. Rev. E 60, 2721 (1999)] for the classical stochastic systems. In this paper, we derive quantum analogues of fluctuation theorem and Jarzynski equality in terms of microscopic reversibility. In other words, the quantum analog of the work by Crooks is presented. Also, for the quasiclassical Langevin system, microscopically reversible condition is confirmed.

Grand Canonical-like Thermalization of Quantum Many-body Scars

Jia-wei Wang, Xiang-Fa Zhou, Guang-Can Guo +1 more

Quantum many-body scar (QMBS) in kinetically constrained quantum systems challenges the conventional eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH). We develop an effective open-system description for constrained dynamics and introduce the definition of quasiparticle number in the system. Based on this, we formulate a revised ETH that accounts for both diagonal and off-diagonal structures of local observables. By introducing the cross coherence purity (CCP), we obtain a unified characterization of off-diagonal matrix elements and show that the relevant density of states (DOS) is determined by the distribution of eigenstates on the energy--quasiparticle-number plane. We numerically verify an inverse relation between the CCP and this generalized DOS. Applied to the quantum many-body scar model, the revised ETH accurately predicts long-time averages and temporal fluctuations of local observables and explains their dependence on initial states. Our framework shows that the anomalous fluctuations and quasi-periodic dynamics of scar states arise naturally from low-DOS regions. These results provide a unified understanding of thermalization and QMBS in kinetically constrained systems.
