Abstract

Optically controlled bistability and signal competition are investigated theoretically and experimentally at an incoherent beam interaction in Fabry-Perot cavity containing two nonlinear elements: photochromic absorber on bacteriorhodopsin controlled by bleaching and coloring external beams and amplifier on organic dye pumped by periodic laser pulses.

Optical bistability under gain saturation conditions in a resonator controlled by external noncoherent beams

Control of optical bistability was demonstrated for an active resonator cavity containing a saturable absorber in the form of an organic dye solution and also for a photochromic absorber based on genetically modified purple membranes of halobacteria. The interaction between the signal and laser beams was assumed to be noncoherent and noncollinear.

Parallel transfer of Optically Stored Information between Novel Bistable Optical Devices

We have fabricated a Fabry-Perot cavity containing a photochromic material called bacteriorhodopsin. It has two photochemical states with absorption peaks at 568 and 412 nm. Upon reversible photochemical change, the complex refractive index changes at the absorption edges of the two states, corresponding to 633 and 442 nm. With mirrors having high reflectivities at both wavelengths, the cavity can be set up in such a way that it would be in optical resonance at either one of the wavelengths depending on the photochemical state of bacteriorhodopsin.

Optical bistability using a Fabry–Perot semiconductor-laser amplifier with two holding beams

Hitoshi Kawaguchi, Kyo Inoue, Hiroyuki Tani

Bistable switching of an optical signal beam by a control beam with a different wavelength, using the nonlinearity of a Fabry-Perot semiconductor-laser amplifier, is reported for the first time to the authors' knowledge. Depending on the initial detuning of the optical signal beam, both normal (counterclockwise) and reverse (clockwise) hysteresis are theoretically and experimentally obtained in the signal output power as a function of the control input power.

Optical bistability in a cavity with light-induced relaxation of nonlinearity

Vladimir Yu. Bazhenov, M. S. Soskin, V. B. Taranenko

Optical bistability in a Fabry-Perot cavity filled with nonlinear riedium possessing reversible bleaching under illumination by two light beams having different wavelengthes is considered theoretically. The erIiancement of optical feedback efficiency is shown to take place when simultaneous intensity changes of light waves have opposite signes. Analytical solution is obtained in a low absorption limit showing that the optical bistability can be realized with four times greater level of background losses as compared with the conventional case.

Modulation of optical bistability by an additional laser beam

Noriaki Tsukada, Takashi Nakayama

A theory of modulation of optical bistability of a main (signal) beam by an additional (control) beam is presented. It is supposed that the mirrors composing a Fabry-Perot cavity are highly reflective to the signal beam but transparent to the control beam. We show that the property of a medium in the cavity, and hence the transmission of the signal beam through the cavity, is modulated by the control beam which changes the dielectric susceptibility of the intracavity medium. Amplification of the signal beam occurs in the limit of a strong control beam. The process can be viewed as a parametric transfer of energy between the signal beam and the control beam with the nonlinear medium providing the nonlinear susceptibility that couples the beams. In addition, multibistability in the transmission characteristics of the signal beam is predicted and attributed to the saturation effect of the multiphoton processes.

Absorptive optical bistability in organic media under the influence of transverse effects

Eliška Jurisová, Jarmila Müllerová

The influence of transverse effects on optical bistability in Fabry-Perot cavity filled with saturable absorber was numerically investigated. A simple model of singlet absorption was used on numerically solving the relationships between the input and output light fields. The proposed model corresponds well to organic compounds considered as novel optical materials with third-order optical nonlinearities. The proposed optically bistable systems were demonstrated for two organic dyes of fluorescein and rhodamine 6G dispersed in transparent solid matrices. Their optically bistable behaviour was anticipated considering the homogeneous and Gaussian distribution of light energy in the radial direction. Most notable cases are discussed related to the changes of the Gaussian beam radii, positive feedback conditions in the Fabry-Perot cavity and considering linear and nonlinear absorption parameters of the organic media. The simulation results enabled us to establish numerically thresholds of Fabry-Perot mirror reflectance and Gaussian beam radius for both nonlinear organic materials, above which absorptive optical bistability can occur. The results can be helpful in design of optical switches for all-optical communication networks.
