Optical bistability under gain saturation conditions in a resonator controlled by external noncoherent beams

Abstract

Control of optical bistability was demonstrated for an active resonator cavity containing a saturable absorber in the form of an organic dye solution and also for a photochromic absorber based on genetically modified purple membranes of halobacteria. The interaction between the signal and laser beams was assumed to be noncoherent and noncollinear.

Optical bistability and signal competition in active cavity with photochromic nonlinearity of bacteriorhodopsin

V. B. Taranenko, Mikhail V. Vasnetsov

Optically controlled bistability and signal competition are investigated theoretically and experimentally at an incoherent beam interaction in Fabry-Perot cavity containing two nonlinear elements: photochromic absorber on bacteriorhodopsin controlled by bleaching and coloring external beams and amplifier on organic dye pumped by periodic laser pulses.

Bistable operation of a phase-conjugate resonator containing an intracavity saturable absorber

Stephen W. McCahon, Gilmore J. Dunning, Kevin W. Kirby +2 more

We have demonstrated bistability in a phase-conjugate resonator containing an intracavity saturable absorber. The saturable absorber was a film of fluorescein-doped boric acid glass. The state of the resonator is determined by an external control beam incident upon the saturable absorber. When the resonator is switched to the on state by means of the control beam, it remains in that state even with the control beam turned off.

Tunable optical bistability of bichromatic fields interacting with four-level systems

D. Kagan, Harry Friedmann

A simple four-level model is used to describe two-band systems such as dyes and semiconductors. The system is irradiated by a bichromatic input in an optical cavity and both fields exhibit optical multistability. The calculations take into account the possibility of noncoherent (electrical) pumping of the system, thus generalizing the model to include semiconductor laser amplifiers. Since both fields are allowed to resonate in the cavity, a low-intensity control beam and/or the noncoherent pumping intensity can 'tune' and adapt the response of the second input. Some applications of this tunability are outlined.>

OPTICAL BISTABILITY IN A TRIMODALE LASER CONTAINING A SATURABLE ABSORBER

S. Djabi, H. Boudoukha, M. Djabi

A simple mathematical model to describe the action of a saturable absorber in a laser cavity (LSA) was developed. The approach considered here takes in a phenomenological way into account the essential physical processes which makes it possible to determine the principal parameters in a LSA and their influences on the optical bistability. We will study theoretically optical bistability in a trimodale laser containing a saturable absorber in the case that the active medium and absorber show a homogeneous broadening. We determine the densities of photons as function of the pumping of the active medium and analyze the linear stability of the solutions obtained.

Optical phase conjugation in a degenerate resonator with a saturable absorber and a gain medium

D A Nikolaev, Vladimir I. Odintsov

A theory is derived for the absorption (or amplification) of a weak wave in a dye solution saturated by an intense laser wave. Experiments show that a saturable dye can be used as a nonlinear medium for optical phase conjugation of a pump laser beam in a degenerate resonator.

Modulation of optical bistability by an additional laser beam

Noriaki Tsukada, Takashi Nakayama

A theory of modulation of optical bistability of a main (signal) beam by an additional (control) beam is presented. It is supposed that the mirrors composing a Fabry-Perot cavity are highly reflective to the signal beam but transparent to the control beam. We show that the property of a medium in the cavity, and hence the transmission of the signal beam through the cavity, is modulated by the control beam which changes the dielectric susceptibility of the intracavity medium. Amplification of the signal beam occurs in the limit of a strong control beam. The process can be viewed as a parametric transfer of energy between the signal beam and the control beam with the nonlinear medium providing the nonlinear susceptibility that couples the beams. In addition, multibistability in the transmission characteristics of the signal beam is predicted and attributed to the saturation effect of the multiphoton processes.
