Experimental test of Selleri’s variable photodetection-probability model

Augusto Garuccio, J. R. Torgerson, Carlos Henrique Monken +2 more

Selleri's model of photodetection based on variable detection probability is analyzed. The results of an experiment that discriminates between the predictions of Selleri's model and quantum mechanics are presented [Bell's Theorem and the Foundations of Modern Physics, edited by A. van der Merwe, F. Selleri, and G. Tarozzi (World Scientific, Singapore, 1992); in Wave-Particle Duality, edited by F. Selleri (Plenum, New York, 1992)]. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Reply to “Comment on ‘Nonlocality counterfactuals, and quantum mechanics’ ”

William George Unruh

Stapp [preceding Comment, Phys. Rev. A 60, 2595 (1999)] has argued that my criticism of his nonlocality proof is wrong. I point out that counterfactual arguments are fraught with dangers, and that any such claim should use them in a conservative manner. A reanalysis of his claims continues to lead me to the conclusion that the nonlocality of quantum mechanics remains unproven.

Violations of locality in polarization-correlation measurements with phase shifters

J. R. Torgerson, David A. Branning, Carlos Henrique Monken +1 more

Two-photon polarization-correlation measurements have been performed in order to test local realism under conditions in which the two photons pass through quarter-wave plates before reaching the polarizers. The motivation for this experiment is the fact that two previous experiments with quarter-wave plates preceding the polarizers failed to observe statistically significant violations of locality [J. F. Clauser, Nuovo Cimento 338, 740 (1976); A. J. Duncan, H. Kleinpoppen, and Z. A. Sheikh, in Bell's Theorem and the Foundations of Modern Physics, edited by A. van der Merwe, F. Selleri, and G. Tarozzi (World Scientific, Singapore, 1992), p. 161]. We find that the Clauser-Horne type of Bell inequality is violated by about 40 standard deviations. Possible reasons for the failure of earlier experiments are discussed.
