Combined distributed feedback and Fabry–Perot structures with a phase-matching layer for optical bistable devices

Abstract

A combined distributed feedback and Fabry–Perot (DFB/FP) structure with a phase-matching layer is proposed for optical bistable devices. Using a simple and versatile nonlinear transfer-matrix method, we demonstrate that the DFB/FP structure can have a much lower bistability threshold than a single DFB structure with a comparable total thickness. The combined structure can also have lower threshold and less sensitivity to absorption than a traditional nonlinear Fabry–Perot etalon.

Static and Dynamic Optical Bistability in Fabry-Pérot and Distributed Feedback Resonators with Quantum Well structures

Recently relevant results on optical bistability in Multiple Quantum Well (MQW) structures at room temperature have been reported [1]. In this paper a rather complete model for optical bistability in Fabry-Pérot (FP) and Distributed Feedback devices (DFB) including a MQW structure is described. It includes the optical dielectric response of the MQW structure, the static output power vs. input power and finally the dynamical behaviour.

All-optical bistable switching and signal regeneration in a semiconductor layered distributed-feedback/Fabry–Perot structure

Jian‐Jun He, Michael Čada, M.‐A. Dupertuis +4 more

We report the experimental observation of optical bistable switching in a combined distributed-feedback/Fabry–Perot structure. The sample had a high switching contrast with almost zero reflectivity in the on-state. A turnoff time as short as 4 ns was measured. The threshold power for bistability was about 2 mW. Bistable switching with the memory effect and a potential application for all-optical signal regeneration were demonstrated.

Effect of chirping on optical bistability in λ/4-shifted semiconductor distributed feedback structures

Tae‐Hoon Yoon, Young‐Il Kim, Kyung-Whan Park +2 more

In this work, we studied the effect of structural chirping on optical bistability in (lambda) /4-shifted semiconductor distributed-feedback, (DFB) devices, such as an etalon with nonlinear mirrors, a (lambda) /4-shifted DFB waveguide, and a (lambda) /4-shifted DFB laser amplifier. We found that chirped DFB devices exhibit bistable switching at a lower input power.

Optical bistability in semiconductor periodic structures

Jian‐Jun He, Michael Čada

A theoretical demonstration of optical bistability in periodic layered media, particularly in long-period GaAs/AlAs superlattices is presented. The proposed structure consists of a periodic multilayer system, as opposed to previously demonstrated nonlinear bistable devices which employed Fabry-Perot etalons. The optical resonance effect which is essential for bistable devices is, in this case, induced by a refractive index modulation. The nonlinear active medium is distributed in the whole structure rather than placed between the two mirrors of a Fabry-Perot cavity. It is shown by a complete calculation of wave propagation in the periodic nonlinear medium that a multiple valued feature appears in the structure's nonlinear reflectivity spectrum. The input/output characteristics of the structure exhibit bistable hysteresis similar to that of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon.>

We show that optical bistability can occur in a distributed feedback structure with an intensity-dependent refractive index. Analytical expressions for the transmissivity are obtained and a comparison with Fabry-Perot-type devices is presented.
