Abstract

We have investigated the effect of an external periodic driving to the macroscopic quantum tunneling of spin-1 condensates in a double-well potential. By manipulating the frequencies of the external magnetic fields, a rich set of phenomena can be studied, and dynamical localization and self-trapping in spin states can be realized using time-dependent magnetic field. We have shown that a relatively high-frequency field may induce a fast oscillation of the macroscopic quantum localization. The larger the periodic magnetic field frequency is, the faster oscillation of the spin condensate magnetization goes. By applying a lower-frequency field to the spin-condensate, one can find that the dynamical properties of the magnetization appears similar behaviors to the results of the modulations of a constant external magnetic field. A possible realization in experiments is also presented.

Location of Spin-1 Condensate Magnetization in a Double-Well Potential under External Field

Lei Tan, Xiaofei Zang, Li Ju-Ping +4 more

The dynamics of magnetization of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a double-well potential under external fields is investigated, focusing on the effects induced by the nonlinear self-interaction and the external magnetic field. Our numerical calculations show that the larger the external magnetic field is, the stronger the macroscopic quantum location of the condensate magnetization becomes.

Quantum tunneling of magnetization in dipolar spin-1 condensates under external fields

Limin Yang, Yunbo Zhang

We study the macroscopic quantum tunneling of magnetization of the $F=1$ spinor condensate interacting through dipole-dipole interaction with an external magnetic field applied along the longitudinal or transverse direction. We show that the ground state energy and the effective magnetic moment of the system exhibit an interesting macroscopic quantum oscillation phenomenon originating from the oscillating dependence of thermodynamic properties of the system on the vacuum angle. Tunneling between two degenerate minima are analyzed by means of an effective potential method and the periodic instanton method.

Macroscopic Spin Tunneling and Quantum Critical Behavior of a Condensate in a Double-Well Potential

Han Pu, Weiping Zhang, Pierre Meystre

In a previous work [H. Pu, W. Zhang, and P. Meystre, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 140405 (2001)]], we have shown that a spinor condensate confined in a periodic or double-well potential exhibits ferromagnetic behavior due to the magnetic dipole-dipole interactions between different wells, and in the absence of external magnetic field, the ground state has a twofold degeneracy. In this work, we demonstrate the possibility of observing macroscopic quantum spin tunneling between these two degenerate states and show how the tunneling rate critically depends on the strength of the transverse field.

Influence of External Magnetic Fields on Tunneling of Spin-1 Bose Condensate

Zhao-Xian Yu, Jiao Zhi-Yong, Jin-Zuo Sun

In this letter, we have studied the influence of the external magnetic fields on tunneling of the spin-1 Bose condensate. We find that the population transfer between spin-0 and spin-±1 exhibits the step structure under the external cosinusoidal magnetic field and a combination of static and cosinusoidal one, respectively. Compared with the longitudinal component of the external magnetic field, the smaller the transverse component of the magnetic field is, the larger the time scale of exhibiting the step structure does. The tunneling current may exhibit periodically oscillation behavior when the ratio of the transverse component of the magnetic field is smaller than that of the longitudinal component, otherwise it exhibits a damply oscillating behavior. This means that the dynamical spin localization can be adjusted by the external magnetic fields.

Coherent control of self-trapping of two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Qiongtao Xie, Wenhua Hai

We investigate the effect of an external periodic driving to the self-trapping transitions of two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential. It is shown that the self-trapping can be effectively controlled by modulating the double-well with a high frequency driving and thus renormalizing the transition parameters. In particular, an exact solution is constructed under the balance condition between the external field and the nonlinear interaction among particles, which allows one to precisely control theself-trapping states.

Parametric Resonance Phenomena in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Breaking of Macroscopic Quantum Self-Trapping

Luca Salasnich

We analyze the periodic tunneling of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential which has an oscillating energy barrier. We show that the dynamics of the Bose condensate critically depends on the frequency $ω$ of the oscillating energy barrier. In the regime of periodic macroscopic quantum tunneling (PMQT) with frequency $ω_J$, the population imbalance of the condensate in the two wells can be enhanced under the condition of parametric resonance $ω= 2 ω_J$. Instead, in the regime of macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST), we find that MQST can be reduced or suppressed under the condition of parametric resonance between the frequency $ω$ of the energy barrier and the frequency $ω_{ST}$ of oscillation through the barrier of the very small fraction of particles which remain untrapped during MQST.
