Abstract

An experimental investigation was made of the spectral dependences of the gain of a signal beam in the presence of transient frequency-degenerate collinear two-beam interaction in sodium vapor, for the purposes of elucidating the characteristic features of two-beam energy transfer in resonant media. A comparison of the experimental data with the results of a theoretical analysis made it possible to relate the low gain of the signal beam gain to the small energy-transfer contribution of diffraction by the phase component of a dynamic grating and the practically equal contribution of diffraction by its amplitude component.

Kinetics of a transient two-beam interaction in resonant media

V. V. Zherdienko, E.K. Kirilenko, Svetlana A. Lesnik +3 more

An experimental and theoretical investigation was made of the kinetics of a concurrent two-beam interaction in a sodium vapor. A change in the pulse shapes of the interacting beams was noted, particularly an enhancement of their modulation, as they propagated in the resonant medium. The deformation of the beams was caused by both bleaching of the medium under the action of the waves and by transient energy transfer between the waves in a dynamic grating formed in the medium.

Some characteristics of formation of volume dynamic holograms by concurrent waves propagating in resonant atomic media

A K Kirilenko

An investigation was made of the transient process of formation of volume dynamic holograms by light within the spectral limits of the D 2 resonant absorption line of sodium. The observed asymmetry of the spectral distribution of the gain of the signal waves in the case of a concurrent interaction between four beams was attributed to different mechanisms of the interaction, the main of which were a four-wave interaction in the long-wavelength wing and transient two-beam energy transfer in the short-wavelength wing. The results obtained were used to recommend an experimental method for the determination of the relative contributions of these processes to the amplification of signal waves.

Transient energy transfer between coherent light beams in a resonant medium

V. L. Vinetskiĭ, Nicholai V. Kukhtarev

Transient conversion of the energy of two coherent light beams in a resonant medium is analyzed by the coupled wave method. It is shown that such conversion has a threshold, is spectrally sensitive, and results in preferential energy transfer from a strong to a weak beam in normal and inverted media. The calculated and experimental energy-conversion intensities are compared for two light beams used to record dynamic holograms in sodium vapor.

Resonant two-wave mixing of optical beams by refractive-index and gain gratings in inverted Nd:YAG

Oleg L. Antipov, Sergey I. Belyaev, A.S. Kuzhelev +1 more

It is shown experimentally that a weak optical signal in a Nd:YAG amplifier can have an extraordinarily large gain that is due to transient coherent nonlinear interaction with a strong laser beam. The effect is explained by the diffraction of the strong beam on the dynamic refractive-index grating induced in the interference field of the interacting optical waves and caused by the difference of polarizability of the excited and the unexcited Nd3+ ions. The numerical calculation confirmed the energy transfer from the strong beam to the weak one owing to the predominance of diffraction efficiency of the refractive-index grating over the gain grating in an inverted laser crystal. The investigations give the estimation of the ratio of the real and the imaginary parts of the resonant susceptibility of Nd:YAG at 1064 nm in the range 2–3.

Two-wave mixing in thin nonlinear local-response media: a simple theoretical model

François Sanchez

A systematic study of degenerate two-wave mixing in the stationary regime in thin nonlinear local-response media is presented. The model is based on the coherent interaction of four waves, the two incident beams, and the two main diffracted waves. Analytical results are obtained in all cases investigated under the assumption of weak-beam amplification. It is demonstrated that the energy transfer arises only from the forward degenerate four-wave mixing terms. In particular, the theoretical results show two new features: (1) the gain factor of the interaction is substantially reduced because of the phase change associated with the two-wave mixing terms and (2) a phase mismatch can compensate for this phase change, leading to an appreciable gain enhancement. Moreover, the general case is solved numerically. Particular attention is given to the influence of separate two-wave and forward degenerate four-wave mixing terms. Self-diffraction effects and the gain dependence versus the ratio of the pump-beam intensity to the signal-beam intensity are investigated.

Dynamic self-diffraction of coherent light beams

V. L. Vinetskiĭ, Nikolai V. Kukhtarev, S. G. Odulov +1 more

A review is given of the present state of theoretical and experimental work on the interaction of two coherent light beams of equal frequency in a nonlinear medium. It is shown that dynamic self-diffraction is substantially different for media with different types of response. Stationary energy transfer between interacting beams is possible in the case of nonlocal nonsymmetric response, whereas this type of transfer is forbidden in the case of local response. Different mechanisms for self-induced changes in the refractive index are examined together with the corresponding processes of energy transfer between the writing beams. The more important applications of dynamic self-diffraction are discussed.
