Nonadiabatic transitions in a three-level system subjected to a laser radiation field with a smoothly varying frequency

Abstract

Explicit expressions are obtained for the probabilities of transitions in a three-level system subjected to two-frequency laser radiation. The radiation or transition frequencies vary smoothly with time, passing through a resonance. The results obtained generalize the Landau–Zener solution to the case of three crossing levels, and they can be used to describe a number of physical phenomena.

Nonadiabatic excitation of degenerate two-level systems by laser radiation with a continuously variable frequency

Vladimir V. Likhanskii

Expressions are obtained for the probability of a nonadiabatic transition between two degenerate levels under the action of laser radiation with a continuously variable resonance frequency. It is shown that this problem reduces to the solution of the Landau–Zener problem for eigenvectors of the matrix of a transition between two degenerate levels.

Level-crossing expansion of laser-induced collisional energy transfer

Michele Crance, Stig Stenholm

The authors introduce a model for radiative collisions which allows one to obtain a simple analytical expression for the transition probability. This model basically consists of an improvement to the Landau-Zener model, in order to obtain a more realistic representation of the Hamiltonian of the system throughout the collision. They apply the results to the problem of radiative collisions when the dipole-dipole interaction is responsible for the energy transfer and obtain an analytical expression for the cross section as a function of the frequency and intensity of the laser field. Their results are compared with experimental results and reasonable agreement is obtained.

Further generalization of Landau–Zener calculation

C. E. Carroll, F. T. Hioe

A three-level model is used for an atom driven by two laser beams of constant amplitude; their detunings are proportional to the time. Simple formulas for the resulting transition probabilities are derived analytically. Special cases of these results are the Landau–Zener result for a two-level model and our earlier result for a symmetrical three-level model.

Exact transition probabilities in the three-state Landau–Zener–Coulomb model

J Lin, N A Sinitsyn

We obtain the exact expression for the matrix of nonadiabatic transition probabilities in the model of three interacting states with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. Unlike other known solvable Landau–Zener-like problems, our solution is generally expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions that have relatively complex behavior, e.g. the obtained transition probabilities may show multiple oscillations as functions of parameters of the model Hamiltonian.

Non-adiabatic and adiabatic transitions at level crossing with decay: two- and three-level systems

M. B. Kenmoe, S. E. Mkam Tchouobiap, C. Kenfack-Sadem +2 more

We investigate the Landau–Zener (LZ) like dynamics of decaying two- and three-level systems with decay rates Γ 1 and Γ 2 for levels with minimum and maximum spin projection. Non-adiabatic and adiabatic transition probabilities are calculated from diabatic and adiabatic bases for two- and three-level systems. We extend the familiar two-level model of atoms with decay from the excited state out of the system into the hierarchy of three-level models which can be solved analytically or computationally in a non-perturbative manner. Exact analytical solutions are obtained within the framework of an extended form of the proposed procedure which enables to take into account all possible initial moments rather than large negative time t 0 = − ∞ as in standard LZ problems. We elucidate the applications of our results from a unified theoretical basis that numerically analyzes the dynamics of a system as probed by experiments.

Transition probabilities for the three-level Landau-Zener model

C. E. Carroll, F. T. Hioe

A three-level model is used for an atom in which two transitions are driven by two laser beams, having constant amplitudes and detunings that are proportional to the time. Assuming that any two of the levels are unoccupied at large negative times, the authors obtain simple formulae for the occupation probabilities at large positive times. Previous results and the early calculation of Landau and Zerner (1932) are special cases of these general formulae.
