Abstract

We obtain the exact expression for the matrix of nonadiabatic transition probabilities in the model of three interacting states with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. Unlike other known solvable Landau–Zener-like problems, our solution is generally expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions that have relatively complex behavior, e.g. the obtained transition probabilities may show multiple oscillations as functions of parameters of the model Hamiltonian.

Nonstationary multistate Coulomb and multistate exponential models for nonadiabatic transitions

Valentin N. Ostrovsky

The nonstationary Schr\"odinger equation is considered in a finite basis of states. The model Hamiltonian matrix corresponds to a single diabatic potential curve with a Coulombic $\ensuremath{\sim}1/t$ time dependence. An arbitrary number of other diabatic potential curves are flat, i.e., time independent and have arbitrary energies. Related states are coupled by constant interactions with the Coulomb state. The resulting nonstationary Schr\"odinger equation is solved by the method of contour integral. Probabilities of transitions to any other state are obtained as $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{t}\ensuremath{\infty}$ in a simple analytical form for the case when the Coulomb state is populated initially (at instant of time $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{t}+0).$ The formulas apply both to the cases when a horizontal diabatic potential curve is crossed by the Coulomb one and to a noncrossing situation. In the limit of weak coupling, the transition probabilities are interpreted in terms of a sequence of pairwise Landau-Zener-type transitions. Mapping of the Coulomb model onto an exactly solvable exponential multistate model is established. For the special two-state case, the well-known Nikitin model is recovered.

Three-level Landau-Zener dynamics

Y. B. Band, Y. Avishai

We compute Landau-Zener probabilities for three-level systems with a linear sweep of the uncoupled energy levels of the $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}3$ Hamiltonian matrix $H(t)$. Two symmetry classes of Hamiltonians are studied: For $H(t)\ensuremath{\in}$ su(2) (expressible as a linear combination of the three spin-1 matrices), an analytic solution to the dynamical problem is obtained in terms of the parabolic cylinder $D$ functions. For $H(t)\ensuremath{\in}$ su(3) (expressible as a linear combination of the eight Gell-Mann matrices), numerical solutions are calculated. In the adiabatic regime, full population transfer is obtained asymptotically at large times, but at intermediate times, all three levels are populated, and St\"uckelberg oscillations can manifest from the occurrence of two avoided crossings. For the open system, (wherein interaction with a reservoir occurs), we numerically solve a Markovian quantum master equation for the density matrix with Lindblad operators that models interaction with isotropic white Gaussian noise. We find that St\"uckelberg oscillations are suppressed and that the decoherence cannot be modeled in terms of a simple exponential.

Integrability in the multistate Landau-Zener model with time-quadratic commuting operators

Vladimir Chernyak, Nikolai A. Sinitsyn

Abstract All currently known exactly solvable multistate Landau–Zener (MLZ) models are associated with families of operators that commute with the MLZ Hamiltonians and depend on time linearly. There can also be operators that satisfy the integrability conditions with the MLZ Hamiltonians but depend on time quadratically. We show that, among the MLZ systems, such time-quadratic operators are much more common. We demonstrate then that such operators generally lead to constraints on the independent variables that parametrize the scattering matrix. Such constraints lead to asymptotically exact expressions for the transition probabilities in the adiabatic limit of a three-level MLZ model. New more complex fully solvable MLZ systems are also found.

Nonadiabatic transitions in Landau-Zener grids: Integrability and semiclassical theory

Rajesh K. Malla, Vladimir Chernyak, Nikolai A. Sinitsyn

We demonstrate that the general model of a linearly time-dependent crossing of two energy bands is integrable. Namely, the Hamiltonian of this model has a quadratically time-dependent commuting operator. We apply this property to four-state Landau-Zener (LZ) models that have previously been used to describe the Landau-St\"uckelberg interferometry experiments with an electron shuttling between two semiconductor quantum dots. The integrability then leads to simple but nontrivial exact relations for the transition probabilities. In addition, the integrability leads to a semiclassical theory that provides analytical approximation for the transition probabilities in these models for all parameter values. The results predict a dynamic phase transition, and show that similarly looking models belong to different topological classes.

A large class of solvable multistate Landau–Zener models and quantum integrability

Vladimir Chernyak, Nikolai A. Sinitsyn, Chen Sun

Abstract The concept of quantum integrability has been introduced recently for quantum systems with explicitly time-dependent Hamiltonians (Sinitsyn et al 2018 Phys. Rev. Lett . 120 190402). Within the multistate Landau–Zener (MLZ) theory, however, there has been a successful alternative approach to identify and solve complex time-dependent models (Sinitsyn and Chernyak 2017 J. Phys. A: Math. Theor . 50 255203). Here we compare both methods by applying them to a new class of exactly solvable MLZ models. This class contains systems with an arbitrary number of interacting states and shows quick growth with N number of exact adiabatic energy crossing points, which appear at different moments of time. At each N , transition probabilities in these systems can be found analytically and exactly but complexity and variety of solutions in this class also grow with N quickly. We illustrate how common features of solvable MLZ systems appear from quantum integrability and develop an approach to further classification of solvable MLZ problems.

Quantum mechanically exact analytical solutions of a two-state exponential model

Vladimir I. Osherov, Hiroki Nakamura

A certain two-state exponential potential model is solved quantum mechanically exactly. Compact expressions for nonadibatic transition matrices are obtained. Interesting quantum mechanical threshold effects are found. Simple very accurate expressions are found from a semiclassical viewpoint for the nonadiabatic transition probabilities, indicating that the exponential model may present a third important basic model in addition to the Landau–Zener–Stueckelberg and the Rosen–Zener–Demkov models. Extension to general cases is also briefly discussed.
