Two-Photon Generation of Excitonic Molecules and Optical Bistability

Abstract

The fusion of two excited polaritons into an excitonic molecule gives rise to an intensity dependence of the dielectric function. The use of this nonlinearity to obtain optical bistability with platelets of direct-band-gap semiconductors is suggested.

Optical Bistability in CuCl

As it is well known from nonlinear optics, the dielectric function ε( Q ˜ ,ω) and the resulting polariton dispersion are functions of the excitation intensity. Since in CuCI biexcitons with energy EBi may be created by the absorption of two photons provided by different light sources, ε( Q ˜ , Ω ) depends on the density of photons with frequency ωℓ, defined such that.

Effects of mirror reflectivity in excitonic optical bistability

Chi C. Sung, C. M. Bowden

The intensity-dependent nonlinearity of the dielectric function resulting from two-photon generation of excitonic molecules has been used to predict optical bistability in CuCl. The prediction is shown numerically to be highly affected by the mirror reflectivity in the Fabry–Perot cavity. In general, the reflectivity makes optical bistability possible at less stringent conditions.

The nonlinear optical characteristics of semiconductors are studied near the two-photon biexciton resonance. Optical bistability is shown to happen below this resonance at very low light intensities.

Abstract Results are given on the investigation of optical bistability and multistability phenomena both, in the exciton range of the spectrum due to exciton‐photon and exciton‐exciton interactions and in the range of two‐photon generation of the biexcitons (excitonic molecules). For each case the steady‐state equations are obtained.
