Abstract

A matrix-theoretic approach for studying quasi-cyclic codes based on matrix transformations via Fourier transforms and row and column permutations is developed. These transformations put a parity-check matrix in the form of an array of circulant matrices into a diagonal array of matrices of the same size over an extension field. The approach is amicable to the analysis and construction of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check codes since it takes into account the specific parity-check matrix used for decoding with iterative message-passing algorithms. Based on this approach, the dimension of the codes and parity-check matrices for the dual codes can be determined. Several algebraic and geometric constructions of quasi-cyclic codes are presented as applications along with simulation results showing their performance over additive white Gaussian noise channels decoded with iterative message-passing algorithms.

A transform approach for analyzing and constructing quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check codes

Qiuju Diao, Qin Huang, Shu Hwa Lin +1 more

An approach for studying quasi-cyclic codes based on matrix transformations via Fourier transforms and row and column permutations is presented. These transformations put a parity-check matrix in the form of an array of circulant matrices into a diagonal array of matrices of the same size over an extension field. The approach is used to characterize certain structural properties of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes such as the girths of their Tanner graphs. Many constructions of quasi-cyclic LDPC codes can be unified under the proposed approach.

Quasi-cyclic LDPC codes: Construction and rank analysis of their parity-check matrices

Keke Liu, Qin Huang, Shu Lin +1 more

A construction of binary and non-binary quasi-cyclic (QC)-LDPC codes based on partitions of finite fields of characteristic 2 is proposed. The construction is carried out in the Fourier transform domain. The parity-check matrices of these QC-LDPC codes are arrays of circulant permutation matrices. The ranks of these arrays are analyzed and combinatorial expressions are derived. Example codes are given and simulations show that they perform well over the AWGN channel decoded with message-passing decoding algorithms.

A transform approach for computing the ranks of parity-check matrices of quasi-cyclic LDPC codes

Qiuju Diao, Qin Huang, Shu Lin +1 more

Several classes of quasi-cyclic LDPC codes have been proposed in the literature and shown to have excellent performance over noisy channels when decoded with iterative message-passing algorithms. However, by and large, important properties of the codes, including their dimensions, are only given for specific codes based on computer programming. Using Fourier transforms, it is shown that the ranks of parity-check matrices of quasi-cyclic codes can be computed. From these ranks, the dimensions of the codes can be determined. The approach, which unifies most of the known algebraic constructions, is given in detail for three large classes of quasi-cyclic LDPC codes which appear in the literature.

Construction of Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes via Masking With Successive Cycle Elimination

Hengzhou Xu, Dan Feng, Rui Luo +1 more

In this letter, we study the construction of quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes by array dispersion and masking. We first propose a class of arrays of circulant permutation matrices (CPMs) of arbitrary size obtained by dispersion. Based on this class of arrays of CPMs, a class of QC-LDPC codes is constructed. For these resulting codes, we analyze their cycle structure and derive the numbers, which indicate how many cycles pass through each CPM in their parity-check matrices. Following the indication numbers with the order from largest to smallest, we replace the corresponding CPMs with zero matrices (ZMs) of the same size one by one until a targeted masking termination condition is satisfied. Then, the resultant arrays of CPMs and ZMs give a large class of QC-LDPC codes. Numerical results show that the codes constructed perform well over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel when decoded with the sum-product algorithm.

A special class of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check codes based on repetition codes and permutation matrices

Fedor I. Ivanov

We propose a new ensemble of binary low-density parity-check codes with paritycheck matrices based on repetition codes and permutation matrices. The proposed class of codes is a subensemble of quasi-cyclic codes. For the constructed ensemble, we obtain minimum distance estimates. We present simulation results for the proposed code constructions under the (Sum-Product) iterative decoding algorithm for transmission over an additive white Gaussian noise channel using binary phase-shift keying.

Rank Analysis of Parity-Check Matrices for Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes

Po‐Chun Yang, Chung-Hsuan Wang, Chi-Chao Chao

Quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes are an important class of LDPC codes which can be encoded and decoded with low complexity and suitable for many applications. As the code dimension, which describes the number of protected information bits, is equal to the code length minus the rank of the parity-check matrix and the parity-check matrix for QC-LDPC codes is usually not full-rank, determining the rank of the parity-check matrix is of essential importance. In this paper, we study the rank of the parity-check matrix for QC-LDPC codes based on the associated polynomials for circulant matrices. A formula for the rank of the parity-check matrix with only one row-block is first derived. We then extend the result to matrices with two, three, or more row-blocks. Some bounds are also presented for matrices with arbitrary numbers of row-blocks. Furthermore, the exact rank is determined for a class of algebraically constructed parity-check matrices.
